What do you think of when you picture something bad for you? Most people would picture something like smoking, unhealthy eating, or lack of exercise. But there is something that you probably didn’t think about, and you do it week, after week, after week. It’s called homework, and its effects are far more destructive than you may imagine. This is why City Academy should get rid of homework. Homework is actually responsible for a wide variety of problems, ranging from increased stress and difficulty with time management, to decreasing student performance, and even causing negative health effects. Getting rid of homework would not only remove these harmful effects, but would have other benefits as well.
One of the many negative influences homework has on students is stress. 56% of students identify homework as a major

This, unfortunately, is almost a complete lie. It is true that homework can provide some academic advantages, however these benefits almost only affect those in upper high school grades 10 through 12. And to make things worse, these benefits are only gained with moderate to light amounts of homework, so most of these students never reap the benefits of homework. This is because they are simply given way too much. Most high school students receive between 90 minutes and two hours of homework per night, and some students up to three hours. This is far too much to provide any academic boost, and in fact it is actually detrimental to student performance. According to studies by Australian researchers, kids who receive homework often have marginally lower test scores than those who have less or no homework. This trend is not only seen with modern data but has also been seen in past studies. This combined with the other effects of homework make homework not only unnecessary and pointless, but harmful as
Healthline.com has said that “Students in high achieving neighborhoods who spend too much time on homework have more health problems, stress, and alienation from society.” Being sick of school is one thing, but when school is making you sick because of the homework you have now is bad. Elementary kids having physical problems just from homework can eventually lead to other possible problems down the road. These problems include substance abuse, becoming a high school dropout, and possibly death by suicide. So why risk a student’s life for a few homework
“The typical student, even in high school does not spend more than an hour per day on homework” (Loveless NP). However, there is an ongoing dispute between critics on whether a lot of homework has more negative effects than positive effects, and vice versa. Homework is the greatest tool for student success, whether they realize it or not, homework is the key to success, it may not be to fun, but it has many positive effects. Homework improves academic success, it develops non-school skills, and it helps involve parents.
A study in 2002 shows that homework causes kids moods to increased anxiety, depression, anger, and other mood disturbances among students. (Coulson)Kids have a seven hour day of school and then on top of that teachers are piling up a minimum of one thirty minutes worth of homework in each class. Kids get stressed out when they realize that they can't do anything fun in the evening which is suppose to be there fre. Homework causes kids to increases in stress and sleep deprivation. In time because they have to stay at home and finish their homework April, a researcher at Stanford University found that too much homework negatively affects kids by increasing stress and sleep deprivation and generally leaving less time for family, friends, and activities. (Graham)Kids don’t get enough sleep and get even more stressed out which causes them to do worse in school.Homework increases family and there conflict.Homework increases family conflict. And the more parents help with children’s homework, the more tension children experience.(Coulson)Homework causes more family conflict which tears families
One of the reasons homework should be banned is because of the unnecessary stress and strain it creates for students. Many students are left pulling their hair out at homework time. Students struggle with homework for different reasons. Some of which are because they do not understand the assigned homework, or they are not being challenged, and quite possibly because they have hit their daily threshold for learning and have no more to give. Furthermore, students who struggle academically will likely require extra assistance to do their homework. Students are therefore tasked with finding a qualified person to assist them with homework. Students are not only under the stress of homework, but now they are under additional stress to find a qualified person that can assist them. Unfortunately, some students may not be able to obtain the help they need with their homework. Consequently and to no fault of their own their grades may be affected inaccurat...
The fact that the amount of homework has risen 3 or 4 times over the past decades shows that homework isn’t brain-stimulating, but exhausting. With this in mind, we can evaluate that longer hours also lead to bad grades, a reduction in self confidence, weakened social skills, and other qualities of life (CNN). These serious allegations all show that homework is not beneficial, but in fact,
Another reason students should receive less homework is because too much homework can cause students to have severe stress, anxiety, and depression. “There’s an inherent quality to homework that evokes a certain amount of stress, and that can be good, because it pushes us to learn. But for some children, the anxiety is so pronounced it basically freezes them” (Bailey). Homework does help students learn, but at what cost? If students are always worried over their homework, the positive effects become null and void. Teachers expect too much from their students. The expectation that the student's homework must be perfect causes even more anxiety in the student (Bailey). Homework can also c...
Because of this list, teachers, parents, and people who are concerned about the situation examine whether homework is worth the stress, anxiety, and pressure it puts on students. An advantage of homework is that it allows teachers and students to interact. They only focused on the good things that they would achieve, such as the development of self-discipline and good work habits. They did not think of the harm it could bring to students.
Have you ever wanted to just shred up your homework or throw it out the window and have no consequences? Kids are assigned daily homework from the time they start kindergarten at the ripe young age of five. Is it really necessary? Does it even help better learning or even higher test scores? The amount of homework we do wastes time, money, paper, and trees because it’s practically the exact same thing we did in class that day. Homework causes kid’s and teen’s frustration, tiredness, little time for other activities and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. It also keeps everyone up; it has kids and teens staying up until they finish it, the parents trying to help them and the teachers grading it. So, I think that homework is a waste and kids and teens should choose whether they want to do their homework for extra credit and practice or not.
Harris Cooper, a researcher on homework from Duke University, claims that too much homework causes stress. In this I paper will talk about the damaging effects homework has on a child, how homework causes students to dropout of school, and some ideas for an alternative to homework.
It also helps us to remember the materials that were taught in class. Another reason homework can be beneficial is the fact that it can prepare us for tests and the dreadful pop-quiz that a teacher may randomly give us. This fact was proven, according to a 2006 study by Harris Cooper, director of Duke University’s Program in Education, in the article “Homework or Not? That is the “Research Question”. The studies instituted that “students who had homework performed better on class tests compared to those who did not” (DeNisco).
4: Clearly, high schoolers should not get homework because it of the issues it causes. 5: One issue it causes is a great deal of stress. Less than 1% of students said homework was not a stressor and 56% of students said homework was the main source of stress. As a teenager, you are already dealing with many stressful things in life, so adding homework on top of that as a main stress point causes too much stress, resulting in poorer health. Which leads me to my next point.
Scientists have proved that these evening assignments has no benefit. Finland, which have the number one students have no homework and more time to socialize with friends. Homework is mostly to general and it is not targeting real needs. Homework for most people is not beneficial.
In today’s world, education is more important than ever, and with education comes homework. However, many teachers give too much homework, which makes students extremely stressed. In addition, some are into sports or after school activities, and some have part time jobs they have to work at, which adds additional stress to the already overworked students. Mounds of homework can cause students to be under so much stress that it affects them mentally, physically, and emotionally. Stress can make students sick with colds, stomach aches, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, and/or anxiety disorders (Menninger and Dugan).
Homework for children in elementary school is close to three times the amount that is suggested. There are five and six-year-olds stressing about homework, and they are being overloaded with homework. Too much homework can counteract the positive results of the work. It can cause sleep deprivation when students stay up all hours of the night to complete their homework assignment.(Martella) It can also stunt the social growth of students.
It is said that homework really did its job over the years. Homework does a lot to children including their improvement in their study habits, the attitude that they have at school and outside of it, gaining independent problem-solving skills and many more. (Johnson, 2016) The debate about homework should be based on the students if they need to find a solution about it.
