Evaluation of the Purpose of Prayer
Prayer has a great purpose for many different reasons. For one reason
it shows the way in which Christians respect and honour God. Even if
God doesn’t answer, surly God can still hear you and that is all that
matters. He would honour your respect to persevere in prayer even
though there was no verbal response. Just because there in no verbal
response, doesn’t mean there is no physical response. Say for example
you were praying your mother would survive an operation and she did.
Although God did not answer verbally he still answered physically and
that is even better. When you are talking to someone and they don’t
answer your instant reaction is not “that was pointless” because you
know that some part of what you have said has still been acknowledged
by that person. Even if God doesn’t hear, there are still all the
great effects that prayer has on a Christian:
· It allows Christians to show and declare their faith.
· It strengthens and helps a Christian in their daily life.
· It creates feelings of praise, love, wonder, repentance and
commitment within the Christian.
· It can be expressed in many different ways both as a community and
as an individual.
Prayer is pointless because surly if God doesn’t answer, there is no
God there. Prayer is similar to having a conversation but you don’t
see people having conversations with brick walls. Is there a point to
having a conversation with something that doesn’t answer back? When
you say to someone how are you? You don’t expect to hear an answer of
the wind whistling through the trees. Prayer is a waste of time
because instead of spending time praying, you could be doing something
to help the community or even saving the world, by becoming someone
like James Bond, saving starving children, using your brain for the
reason that God really put us on this planet, if there is a real God.
All these things could make a difference but what use is it praying to

Book Review of The Path of Prayer: Four Sermons on Prayer by St. Theophan the Recluse
Folklore speculation states that the hymn “Rock of Ages” was allegedly written following a sudden and severe thunderstorm, that the author, Augustus Montague Toplady witnessed while being forced to take shelter under a rocky cliff. Although this composition was completed in 1776, it remains to be a source of inspiration for a multitude of people today. Salvation is the prime ingredient to this poetically constructed song, Toplady systematically captures biblical translations that masterfully support his concepts. The message he artistically conveys is simple, without God, more importantly, without the sacrifice of Christ Jesus, the human soul cannot be salvaged. Therefore, only by the grace of God can we enter freely
In the book A Short and Easy Method of Prayer, Madame Guyon touches on how one can accept all things God through prayer. Through the simple steps of meditation and reading accompanied by meditation, Madame Guyon teaches the reader how to use those steps to have a relationship with God. As a person of the Quietism faith in the seventeenth century, Madam Guyon was going against the norm of the church structure. Not only was she advocating people did not need to go to weekly services, but she was also going against the male’s leaders of the church. One of the questions this book can help historians to answer is how religion shaped everyday life. However, the readers need to keep in mind the biases surrounding this book. This is just one of the many religious books of the seventeenth century and viewing the book from a 21nd mindset. Madame Guyon was one of the few female religious leaders in the seventeenth century France.

Prayer in Public Schools An issue that has been constantly debated for years is whether voluntary prayer in public schools should be permitted. A student should be allowed to pray voluntarily at the beginning of each school day based on many reasons. Prayer based on moral beliefs reinforce good citizenship as defined by our forefathers. A daily reminder of a need for the belief of good over evil is a necessary part of this society.
Prayer is a touchy subject these days. If one were to see an Islamic man kneeling towards Mecca in a public place, say a grocery store or on a sidewalk or a school, it would cause no little fuss. It would be a strange sight indeed. People would certainly stare and talk; some might even take offence. There has been much controversy concerning the issue of public prayer. Most of it pertains to the conduction and leading of a prayer, especially in instances where school is the setting. Many individuals are ignorant of the actual laws in our country regarding the matter of prayer in schools: there are no laws against individual prayer. That would be extremely unconstitutional. There are, however, laws against involuntary prayers. Here is what the Bill of Rights has to say about it: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” (1). It is well known that The United States allows individuals to have freedom of religion; however, since this rule was established, there has been some confusion revolving around it. One major difficulty is the difference of interpretations. Some say that prayer should be totally eliminated from schools, while some suggest that prayer should be mandatory. Neither of these proposals are acceptable; a balance is needed, freedom is needed. Prayer should be allowed in schools because individuals should have total religious freedom.

In response to Charles Homeyer’s letter I would like to say that I agree with him in saying that gun control is not the answer to all our problems. Nevertheless, I would like to respectfully disagree with him by expressing that we should not put prayer and Bible readings back in public schools because as we have seen in the past, there are many disadvantages such as increase in violence and an encroachment on parental freedom and responsibility.
Everyone looks for something greater than themselves, and most people find it in their spiritual life. But for many people it is hard for them to believe in a God, or a superior being because of their selfish desires. Peter Kreeft, a professor of philosophy, has written an article the “Twenty Arguments for the Existence of God” in which he states 20 arguments that prove the existence of God. One of his main arguments is the Argument of Desire which says that everyone has a desire for some real object that satisfies us. But in us there is a desire which nothing in time, on earth, and no creature can satisfy. Because of this there must be something more than time, earth and creatures that can satisfy our desire.
The first reason focuses on the belief of faith. The following passage is taken from the Bible. It has excellent meaning because it shows that everyone has faith. Having faith is the first sign that shows everyone believes in a religion. There are two good definitions of religion. The first is belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe. The second is a personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship. The passage shows that everyone has an institutionalized system that has belief. The passage is as follows, ?Everyone believes in something. No one can endure the stress and cares of life without faith in God. Atheists cannot prove there is no God. Pantheists cannot prove that everything is God. Pragmatists cannot prove that what will count for them in the future is what works for them now. Nor can agnostics prove that it is impossible to know one way or the other. Faith is unavoidable, even if we chose to believe only in ourselves. What is to be decided is what evidence we think is pertinent, how we are going to interpret that evidence, and who or what we are willing to believe in.? (Luke 16:16)(4) The passage is great proof that there is a God. It shows that everyone has faith. Faith is a big aspect in religion. With every religion, there is likely to be a single holy being, a god.

School prayer, in the context of religious liberty, is state-sanctioned or mandatory prayer by students in public schools. Depending on the country and the type of school, state-sponsored prayer may be required, permitted, or prohibited. Countries which prohibit or limit school prayer often differ in their reasons for doing so: In the United States, school prayer cannot be required of students in accordance with the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
