Writing is no easy task: transforming intricate ideas in your mind to coherent, limpid sentences is no simple feat. And even when you think you are finished with a piece of writing, you can always improve it. Which is why my analysis of The Wife Speaks by Elizabeth Stoddard, which I earned a 7 on, requires revisions on numerous aspects: my lengthy, garrulous thesis, and--most importantly--the analysis of the poem itself, which is cursory and superficial. Right off the bat, I noticed that my thesis, which comprises five-lines by itself, obscures my argument due to its incoherence.
As time goes by, I noticed how reading and writing became one of my weaknesses. Having an assignment readings and writing an essay about it was one of the things I don’t like doing. I am not sure if there are any valid reason on why I don’t like it but all I know is there is always a point where I end up getting stuck because I do not know what else to say. Also, reading gets deeper and some of the words are hard to understand especially when some of the readings use metaphors. However, in every essay I turned in, I always look forward on all of my teacher’s comments because I always want to know what else I am missing, what else to say, and how to improve it. I guess in this case, Sherman Alexie and I are opposite towards our view on writing but we are the alike on the view of learning and improving.
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
Recently, I wrote an essay in my Pre-History Humantics class about why I felt Romans were inventors of culture versus maintainers of culture. I used comprehensive reading skills to analyze the text and provide examples on how I based my conclusion. In addition, I used persuasive methods in effort to persuade the reader to agree with my stance. In the 2016 Presidential election I casted my vote for a candidate based on an analysis of that person and what I thought they stood

Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
Beyond many people’s knowledge, the news is not always exclusively disclosing objective facts on events. Rather, the news platform utilize rhetoric to influence its audience’s interpretation on an event. More astonishingly, many people don’t recognize misinformation and thus allow the news platform to subtly force an opinion on their audience. An impressionable audience is the product of our media dependent culture; ultimately, media has the power to distribute biased information and strongly influence the public. Academically, I have learned many new ways to look at literature. My high school teachers did not expose us to many literary theories or how to apply them. Indeed, we learned about romanticism, realism, transcendentalism, etc. but never really related them to our writing. Most of the writing we did was simply based upon our own opinions. We hardly ever used secondary sources. I believe that deconstructionist theory was the most helpful theory I learned this year for analyzing literature. Breaking a poem up line by line or image by image or even a story into small sections made it a lot easier to grasp the main concepts of the work. Most of the time during this semester, however, I took a formalist point of view.

By revising my essays I was able to make the content and message seem more important and made the final drafts seem a slight degree better than the originals, but the finals were better nonetheless. The instructor did a very good job in guiding me and helping find my way into writing by focusing on some of the problems I was facing and clarified them so that I would better understand them. The instructor helped me expand on my grammatical by helping me discover what it was that I lacked while constructing basic sentence structure; the usage of commas and semi-colons, quotations, and how to sight titles of books and articles within an essay. This English 101 course I have attended has helped me develop better writing skills as well as helped me create more profound essays and a very satisfying research paper.
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next. I have gained a lot. Firstly,having grasped many new words is obvious gain, more advanced words can improve the level of the articles. Secondly, a variety of sentence patterns make me impressed. The author used long sentence frequently, which not only help to illustrate points or phenomena clearly, but also show the author’s strong writing ability. Using the dual sentences makes the sentence symmetrical, on the other hand, adds more interest and literary grace to the article.
I don’t know how other people analyze or if they even have a process, but I have a set of questions I ask myself to make sure that what I’m writing is actually an analysis. When I learned how to analyze things, I noticed that analysis is supposed to relay your own assessment of the text. When writing an essay the key to a thought provoking analysis is to show the reader what I took away from the source. How I separate a good analysis from a summary is to see if it answers the question: Does the analysis contain my own point of view on the text and support the main theme/message I’m sending?” If my analysis doesn’t fit the criteria, then I know that I have to rewrite it or reword the sentence. This process has helped me eliminate any paraphrasing that I could have mistaken for analysis throughout my essays. However, there will be certain times where I can’t even come up with an analysis. When I can’t put my thoughts into words, I think of other questions like “What about the evidence backs up my thoughts or claims?” Or “Why was this evidence important towards my essay/ why did I choose this statement as my example?” These are my strategies on how to think of analysis or weed out any paraphrasing in my
At the start of the semester, I struggled mostly with using summarizations of the book as evidence, rather than elaborating on my own ideas. My second paper, for example, can be considered more of a summary of the book Frankenstein, rather than an argumentative essay on the dangers of the acquisition of knowledge. By the third paper, I was aware of my struggle with summarizing the text, rather than arguing my point, so I did a better job at making an argument. Along with starting off the semester by mainly summarizing the text, I struggled with using topic sentences. In my second paper, my paragraphs had no definite beginning and ending sentences; they were simply continuations of the following paragraph. My third and fourth essays had stronger topic and conclusion sentences, allowing me to stick more closely with my thesis, rather than drifting away from what was asked. Though I feel that I could greatly improve in providing evidence and having stronger topic sentences, I believe that I have greatly improved throughout this semester. I had started this semester very weak in my abilities of elaborating on a topic and providing strong topic and conclusion sentences, and though I still have more room to develop these skills, I have become a stronger writer after developing these
