To End Suffering
The word “euthanasia” is derived from the greek word “Eu Thanos,” which means “good death.” Euthanasia, or mercy killing, is the action of putting a person or animal to death painlessly to end their suffering. Mercy killing is a moral way to show compassion to a loved one who is suffering.
In the novella Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, George Milton is faced with a difficult decision when his friend, Lennie Small, murders the wife of another important character named Curley. George must choose to leave Lennie at the mercy - or lack thereof - of Curley, or to step in and end his life, thus saving him from the torture he would’ve faced otherwise. George made a promise to Lennie’s aunt Clara before she passed away to care for Lennie, and he feels responsible for the larger man. In order to protect Lennie, George shot him in the back of the head. In a conversation with Candy, George states, “I ain’t gonna let them hurt Lennie” (Steinbeck 95). Lennie

They argue that life is precious and should be valued, no matter how much or how little a person has left. A person’s life should be treasured and not carelessly thrown away. However, if they are sick and living a life of agony, they should be able to choose when to die. In “My Right to Death with Dignity at 29,” by Brittany Maynard, Brittany has a severe brain tumor and will die within six months. She says that no one should be told to commit euthanasia, but “Who has the right to tell me that I don't deserve this choice? That I deserve to suffer for weeks or months in tremendous amounts of physical and emotional pain?” (Maynard) No one should be forced to suffer when there is a simpler alternative. And if a person like George Milton or John Wise steps in to help facilitate a more peaceful death for their loved one, then it should be seen as an act of selflessness, not
As we journey through life, we must make difficult decisions, even when few options exist and the situation is grim. In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, the decision George faces after Lennie accidentally kills Curley’s wife is complicated, as none of his choices are good. The importance of his relationship with Lennie forces George to look at the big picture and act in Lennie’s best interests, even though the action he must finally take will result in a weight that he will carry forever.
In ending of "Of Mice And Men", George kills Lennie after he killed Curley's wife. However, I can still feel sympathy towards George, and see his action as justifiable. In the beginning of the book I had sympathy towards George. The book starts with George talking to Lennie and from this you learn a lot about their relationship. After Lennie asks for ketchup, which they can't get, George gets angry at Lennie and says, “Whatever we ain’t got, that’s what you want. God a’mighty, if I was alone I could live so easy. I could go get a job an’ work, an’ no trouble" (6). This shows the reader that George has given up a lot to take care of Lennie. He has given up his job security and a lot of his happiness because he takes care of Lennie. In chapter 3, the reader finds out how George and Lennie started traveling together, and from this the reader can infer that George travels
Brittany Maynard was a twenty nine year old woman who married her husband just a year before she passed away. Before she passed, she was diagnosed with a terminal disease, brain cancer. Her doctors gave her six months to live and using treatment might shorten her already short amount of time that she had left to live. Maynard and her family uprooted from their home in San Francisco, California and moved to Portland, Oregon. In Oregon, she planned to get new physicians and after attending appointments, she could be prescribed a lethal pill that would end her life. She wanted to live her last six months happily, and she didn’t want to suffer and have her family watch her suffer. (Death) She wanted to be able to end her life on her own terms, and not when the cancer says that she had to. She received a lot of unkind criticism for her choice. Death with Dignity Act, or the use of assisted suicide is morally justifiable, especially in Brittany Maynard’s
That ain’t no good, George.’”(Steinbeck 97). Because Lennie killed Curley’s wife, he committed a felony. George wanted Lennie to be thrown in jail at first. He wanted Lennie to be arrested because he thought it was the best thing for Lennie but then Slim told him it would not be good for Lennie. It would be bad for Lennie because Lennie would not understand his rights because he’s mentally challenged and locking him up in a cage would just hurt Lennie. George then realized he needed to kill Lennie so nobody would mistreat him. George is protecting others from Lennie.”’Lennie-if you jus’ happen to get in trouble like you always done before…’”(Steinbeck 15). George has been with Lennie for many years and he knows how Lennie will never learn and he will keep committing bad stuff. George knew something was going to happen at the ranch because Lennie has always done something wrong. George tried to prevent something from going wrong but he couldn’t. As a result he had to put down Lennie so he would not hurt anyone ever again. George felt the hard choice of killing Lennie was the right decision for George because Curley wanted to get his revenge, Lennie would be mistreated in prison and he was
Euthanasia comes from the Greek root-eu, meaning good, and thanatos meaning death. Together they signify "good death." For example, you have a terminal illness and doctors informed you that your life span would not exceed four weeks starting from today, and during this waiting period, you will suffer excruciating pain and unbearable agony. What would you do? You decide to take action. What should it be? An injection, a pill, or jumping off a building? Applying the concept of euthanasia, it means you will either choose an injection or a pill.
After Lennie makes his mistake of killing Curley's wife the other characters want to brutally kill him being led by Curley but George who realises that this is a cruel way for Lennie to die and that he can’t save Lennie he decides that Lennie must have a merciful death. The reader infers when Curley says “ ‘I know who done it,[...][It was lennie].I know he done it. [...] I’m gonna get him. I’m going for my shotgun[...]I’ll shoot him in the guts’ ” ( 96). In this quote we understand that Curley plans on killing Lennie but in a more painful way than Lennie deserves. Thus George realizes that Lennie is about to be killed in a horrific way so he intervenes and kills Lennie in a peaceful way. This shows that mercy killing is to be done over the horrific way that Curley wants to take out Lenie. Because Lennie would have a much worse death than needed and Lennie could have put up a fight, George completes a mercy killing as the safest
George really helps him through problems that keep happening during the book. Lennie is incapable to live because he does not know his strength and George has to play the role as a living assistant for Lennie. Lennie does not mean to harm but because of his condition he essentially harms people. In the book it explains the trouble in weed and George explains “Well he saw a girl in a red dress and a red dress and he just wanted to feel it and when he touched it the girl just starts yelling and all he can think to do is hold on” ( Steinbeck 41). The quote states or explains how Lennie can scare or harm people.
Consistently throughout the story George and Lennie were there for each other; in fact towards the very beginning Lennie and George discussed how they were better off than most guys because they had each other (14). When George killed Lennie a part of him died too, George knew murdering Lennie would hurt him mentally and emotionally. However he did it because he wanted what was best for his friend no matter the cost. His actions were altruistic and that made his decision the more favorable one. Another instance when George was selfless was when he gave up his dream. Throughout the story George and Lennie dreamed of and worked towards owning their own piece of land together. However, after discovering Curley’s wife dead, George returned to reality and informed Candy that they would, “never do her” (94). After losing his friend George understood the impossibility of achieving the American Dream. Beforehand George knew he would not want to live out his dream without Lennie, so by protecting Lennie and giving up on his own dream he put Lennie above himself. Conversely, someone may believe that George's actions were selfish and that he benefits himself by killing Lennie. After George comes after Lennie, the dim-witted man asks if George was going to yell at him. Reluctantly George told him “If I was alone, I could live so easy,” (103). Although George said
The novella Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck introduced the reader to the character George. George is faced with the difficult decision of whether or not to kill his best friend. His best friend, Lennie has a mental disability that resulted in his brain not fully developing. In the 1930’s no one respected people with a disability. George had to constantly run around trying to get Lennie out of trouble and he never had time to himself. Finally when Lennie was getting hunted down by a lynching party for the second time, George thought maybe it was best if Lennie wasn't around anymore. George was devastated that he would no longer have his companion by his side but he could no longer look after Lennie. His decision was tough but he killed Lennie out of love.
“And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie’s head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger.” (Steinbeck 106). In John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, Lennie Small is a middle-aged character with a severe mental disability. He always feels as if he has to be petting something soft, or that satisfies his touch. One of these things he pets is a woman’s hair, and as he started to pet it more, she started getting angry and was shaking, as she thought he was ruining it. As he got nervous, because he had never seen a woman up close before, and he snapped her neck and killed her, accidentally. Lennie then ran away from the ranch where he was working and George Milton, his lifelong friend and travel buddy, found him, and decided to shoot and murder him thinking it would be the best way to handle the situation. It was considered a mercy killing in his eyes, when it was really a murder. Mercy killings are told to be assisted suicide, where one chooses to end their
People were terrified and disfranchised, John Steinbeck created Of Mice and Men which sets place during the ¨dirty thirties¨ (time of the Great Depression) a time where strength could not overcome aloneness and alienation. The child-like character Lennie was one of the most misunderstood characters even with his best friend and caretaker George. In the beginning, they were uncanningly together in a society of loners during the time having only each other, so close many assumed they were brothers. Throughout the story George had vowed to take care of Lennie, however under the circumstances he faced he chose to shoot his ¨best friend¨. What truly led up to this and how would the story have gone differently if George did not kill Lennie?
Euthanasia comes from the Greek word that means “good death” (“Euthanasia” Literary). In general, euthanasia refers to causing the death of someone to end their pain and suffering oftentimes in cases of terminal illness. Some people call this “mercy killings.”
Death happened every day in the world, people gets killed for different reasons, and “No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new.” (Steve Jobs). In the john Steinbeck of mice and men lots of death happened for example Curley’s wife and even animals gets killed by Lennie and Lennie gets killed by George.
A person should have the option to discontinue living if they are in unbearable pain. The unrecoverable unconscious patients should have a relative make the choice for them. But only if they cannot make the choice themselves, such as a permanent coma, nonfunctioning brain, etc. A person suffering immense unbearable pain should be able to choose whether they want to continue fighting the pain. “In October 2014, twenty-nine-year-old Brittany Maynard renewed attention to the debate over euthanasia when she posted a YouTube video relating her personal story. Maynard was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in January 2014. After weighing the various treatment options, she decided that she would end her life before the disease became intolerable. She and her husband moved from California to Oregon, where assisted suicide [has been legal since] 1997. She established residency in the state and was able to obtain a prescription for a lethal dose of medication from her doctor” (Assisted Suicide and
Euthanasia is described by the Oxford English Dictionary as ‘The bringing about of a gentle and easy death, especially in the case of incurable and painful diseases’ .
