Throughout time, the cultures of European countries and North America have diversified in some ways and shared qualities in others. Culture is defined as the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively. With the invention of mass media, the diffusion of cultural norms sky rocketed. With more and more cultural diffusion, one may assume that there are no longer very many differing customs between Europe and America. However, new cultural differences are created every day.
Often, our perception of time is molded by the environment in which we live. In American culture, a one hundred year old building is considered old. While in European countries, a one hundred year old building is still considered to be a young building. As Americans flock to European countries looking to admire the structural awe of European architecture, they are exposed to buildings with ages of two thousand years and older. These buildings are what Europeans would consider old.
The European perception of distance is another major contrast to that of many Americans. If a European were to travel sixty miles, they would consider the distance to be fairly far. For Americans however, sixty miles is considered to be a relatively short distance. Much of these varying perceptions on distance are intertwined with the difference in continent size. Although Europeans consider distances to be much larger than Americans, on average Europeans travel much more than Americans. This eagerness to travel may have to do with Europe’s close proximity to other countries.
Much like Americans, Europeans often use the size and brand of their cars as a status symbol. For most Europeans though, a smaller car is much more practical. Unlike mos...

.... European church goers generally consist of the elder and families on special events such as Christmas. Throughout American politics, politicians openly reference god. In many European countries, mixing politics and religion is considered to be taboo. For many religious Americans, someone stating that they do not believe in god would be considered extremely distasteful. In Europe, the opposite is true.
Throughout time, the cultures of European countries and North America have diversified in some ways and shared qualities in others. Cultural diversity is not just something that exists, cultural diversity is essential to society. Without cultural diversity, countries would lose their uniqueness. If a country has no unique qualities, what is the purpose of visiting it? If no one visited other countries, repercussions would be felt throughout multiple industries.
Culture has been defined numerous ways throughout history. Throughout chapter three of, You May Ask Yourself, by Dalton Conley, the term “culture” is defined and supported numerous times by various groups of people. One may say that culture can be defined as a set of beliefs (excluding instinctual ones), traditions, and practices; however not all groups of people believe culture has the same set of values.
By 1763, although some colonies still maintained established churches, other colonies had accomplished a virtual revolution for religious toleration and separation of church and state. The Anglican Church was the only established denomination in England. In contrast, the colonies supported a great variety of churches. The largest were the Congregationalist, Anglican, and German churches, but many smaller denominations could be found through the colonies. In addition to this, a high percentage of Americans didn’t belong to any church. These differences could be attributed to the fact that many of the Europeans who immigrated to America didn’t fit in to or agree with the churches in their homelands.
Haste In Romeo and Juliet, a father and son argue over the way they treat each other. Then, in the son’s haste and hot-headed temper, he decides to live with his mother. Eventually, he realizes that this decision is wrong, which causes him to go back to his father to patch things up. But in his father’s haste and hot-headed temper, he yelled at his son over the way that he was being treated. This cycle happened two more times before the tragic final outcome.
Culture often means an appreciation of the finer things in life; however, culture brings members of a society together. We have a sense of belonging because we share similar beliefs, values, and attitudes about what’s right and wrong. As a result, culture changes as people adapt to their surroundings. According to Bishop Donald, “let it begin with me and my children and grandchildren” (211). Among other things, culture influences what you eat; how you were raised and will raise your own children? If, when, and whom you will marry; how you make and spend money. Truth is culture is adaptive and always changing over time because
Native Americans and Europeans were the begging of the new world. Their differences are more than similarities, whether by the religion, culture, race, and gender. Native Americans and European spoke two different languages, and lived in two different ways. The reason why Native Americans were called Indians, because when Columbus landed in America he thought that he was in India, so he called them Indians. Native American were nomadic people, some of them were hunter and some were farmers. Europeans were much more developed than Native Americans, and had more skills. Also, there were differences in holding positions between Native American women and European women. The cultural differences led to a bloody bottle
The United States is an immense country, with many residents and citizens descending from immigrants who have influenced many customs, traditions, behaviors and ways of life. Unlike many old world nations, the United States does not have a homogenous population or a traditional homeland. However, American culture can be interpreted as being largely based in Western Europe with influences from the Native Indians, Africans, Asians, and elsewhere.
Automobiles play an essential role in American society. As if being the major means of transportation was not impressive enough, automotives can be seen on T.V., in movies, in magazines, and can sometimes be indicative of a person’s wealth and social status. On average, Americans drive nearly 40 miles and drive for just over 50 minutes driving per person per day (http://www.bts.gov). That means a person spends roughly one-sixteenth of a day driving. It would make sense, then, to make such an essential part of society as efficient, cost effective, and clean as possible. However, that is not the case. As the years have passed cars have actually begun to move away from efficiency. Hawken writes, “[The automobile] design process has made cars ever heavier, more complex, and usually costlier. These are all unmistakable signs that automaking has beco...
Europeans emerged from a technologically advanced society, on the other hand, Native American people lacked innovative technology and relied solely on what nature provided. As these two drastically different cultures collided each other’s way of life was forever altered. Life changed from the ground up through the exchange of animals, seeds, and even microorganisms. As these two vastly different cultures collided their interactions sculpted future events that led to one nation’s industrialization and another’s reduction; furthermore, Present day life in America was shaped by this collision. Before the European and Native American worlds collided, Native Americas had not encountered horses, cattle, and swine. These animals were introduced to them through the European explorer, Christopher Columbus. Cattle and pigs were readily employed by the Native Americans as food; however, the arrival of the horse revolutionized Native American life, permitting tribes to hunt the buffalo much more effectively. The horse not only permitted improvements for hunting, but it also made Native American’...
Marcus Garvey said, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” (Vinod, 2013, p. 358). According to (Cole, 1986) Culture is “a people’s patterns of behavior; the totality of values, ideas and means by which a people deals with its geographical, social, political and economic environment” It is considered as way of life adopted and exercised over a given period of time some bordering to centuries. Different communities have different cultures which are essential in assigning each of these communities an identity. With globalization and modern trends, cultures have been shared among countries leading to determination of newer cultural practices corresponding to the society in question. Cultures give rise to behaviorism and inform the social relations among people and countries. Cultural pundits have argued that the Bahamian culture and the American culture are highly similar and related in terms of dialects, beliefs and values. However, major differences in language, religion and traditions show that the Bahamian and American cultures are more different than many people believe.
SPAIN--almost invisible to Americans--because we see Hispanic culture through the lens of Latin America. We do not teach Castilano in our schools, we teach Spanish, a language NOT spoken in Spain.
The Europeans’ preconceived opinion about the Natives Americans had a big impact in the life of the Native Americans . Many Indians died not only because of the diseases that the Europeans carried, but the cruelty of the settlers and the brutality of slavery also contributed to the destruction of the native population. The ones that entitled themselves as Christians and grabbed about their holiness, marched through the continent expelling people from their own land, raping women and killing people. The Native American culture suffered a great loss as well “European trade goods quickly became part of Native American material culture, and their efforts to gather furs for trade for these goods altered the ecological balance in much of the New
Differences in culture make country has its own traditional customs. Wedding, an extremely important event on one's life, has specific ritual observances. However, thanks to the cultural exchange, Vietnam wedding customs and those of a foreign country – America, have both similarities and differences.
Everybody has their own definition of Culture – and when this word is used generally, most audiences have a rough idea of its meaning. Culture usually refers to the beliefs, ideas, languages, rituals and traditions by certain communities, that are passed from generation to generations continuously over the past many centuries. In society, two cultures cannot be same if one is located on the west coast and the other one is all the way to the East. As we compare, the American and Indian cultures have very vast differentiation between them. While the culture of America is a mixture of different cultures since each immigrant internally packed his or her previously known culture, but sooner they will become Americanized, but on the other hand the Indian culture is unique and has its own values. India is a captivating country full of humble traditions, lively festivals, and honest beliefs. India has an enormous bundle of religions and languages with Hindi and Punjabi are the most popular in most of the cities. The vast geographic location of India, and America have contributed to the rise of new cultures; each characterized with different style of marriages, education system, and family relationship.
Human culture is a very diverse element of humanity. It has a variety of different building blocks that create the full meaning of the term. It involves aspects such as food, customs, music, language, and art. Similar patterns of culture form groups of people with common beliefs and lifestyles known as societies or communities. Culture can vary based on location of the society and the history of how the culture arose. Culture is constantly changing in so many ways and controversy arises between these societies with different views. In Barbara Gallatin Anderson’s book, Around the World in 30 Years, and several of the case studies the class has discussed this year, these diverse cultures were closely analyzed and the problems that arose from
Culture is the social behavior and norms found in a particular group of people and society, defined by everything from language, religion, food, habits, music, and values. In one line, culture is the people's way of life. Culture is also the distinction between nature and nurture. The term nature means what we get biologically or naturally and the term nurture means how our surroundings shape our identities. People genetically get some ability and similarity just like their family members. But in some case, their culture may be similar or different. If a child born in an Indian society and raised in the European society, that child may follow European culture more effectively. Cultural sociologists study for how different cultural elements
