Eulogy for Grandfather
My grandfather and I had a number of secrets between us. Most of these, I can't tell; the salient feature of a secret is not the matter contained within the secret, but the trust implied.
But I'll tell you one secret, because I think it's important, and because I think that my grandfather won't mind. It's a little secret, without much drama to it: My grandfather once told me that he would have liked to have been a history teacher.
Like I said, it's a little secret. It's a little dream. But ever since he told it to me, four years ago now, the image of my grandfather in front of a class, teaching history, has stayed fixed in my memory. It is something that seems right and true.
Part of this may have to do with the fact that, in a very real sense, my grandfather embodied history to me. I have only just now come to that point in my life where time has loosed itself from its moorings, and memory has begun to develop an appreciable depth. But to me, my grandfather always seemed to have that depth.
We can all remember asking our grandparents about their lives; it's fascinating to a young person, because here is someone talking about a time and a place that never existed or could exist for that young person. Here, before you, is someone who has traveled through time.
And as you reconstruct the past with a grandparent, you also reconstruct the person. My grandfather had always been my grandfather: Older, balding, and grumpy. But he was also once a child, who didn't speak English until he was five years old. He was a teenager who used to play baseball. He was a young man who was dragged to a USO dance by a buddy, there to meet the woman he would marry. There's a richness of a life that can only be told though a recitation of its history. My grandfather came truly alive to me when I knew his life.
A place and its history are meaningless unless there is a context in which to place it. The proper context for my father was within his family. Families are also the embodiment of history: The individual elements change as the men and women of it pass though time, but the family remains. My grandfather told me that in the little Italian town from which our family came, there is a book that lists the names of our family back hundreds of years.
Man must not only remember his past, but also choose to remember it as it really happened—for, to again quote Eliot, “What might have been is an abstraction" (175). Fantasizing about an abstract, idealized past will never give success i...
The book Grandpa and Thomas provides many opportunities for students to make meaning of this text. Text-to-self connections can be made by students remembering times when they have ever gone to the beach, or gone on a special outing with their grandpa. Relating this text back to other Pamela Allan te...
One of my earliest memories of Grandpa begins with us driving to the Monmouth Park Racetrack. We sure did love to go to the track and root for Julie Krone or one of our other favorite jockeys. He loved challenges, and he especially loved the challenge of picking the ponies. He would read the race programs in the Asbury Park Press and usually pre-pick most of the day's favorite horses before ever leaving the house. Still, on arrival, we always bought the program and maybe a race sheet or two before entering the track grandstand. After picking up a couple of seats right around the finish line or maybe a little past it, back to figuring he'd go. As he went, grandpa would always point out the horses that had won recently or looked like they were due. "I have a feeling about this one" he'd say.
He later on told me about his life after the war and his love for horses. All my grandpa was doing was sharing his experiences in life and how it affected him. He liked telling stories all he wanted was for someone to listen.Wiesel explains in his essay “A God Who Remembers”,what it was like for him during WWII. Talking about how it was not easy, leading into the fact that people need to tell the stories of the victims, so that history doesn 't repeat itself. Even though my grandpa may have not realised, it he was passing on his story so that history would not repeat itself. That we were all aware of the terrible things that had happened in the world, and if it ever did come to it that we would try our best to prevent it from happening. This is exactly what Wiesel explains throughout his essay, “ that our words will help others to prevent my past from becoming another person’s- other people’s-
Throughout time, history has proven that a great government style is the key for having a dominant and long lasting civilization. Without a solid government structure, a civilization is doomed to fail and will eventually fall into ruin. A republic is one of the styles of government that is beneficial to everyone who uses it. The republic style of government was created to benefit the common people and hard working citizens and reward them for their efforts. By using this republic, a civilization would thrive and be riddled with countless luxuries. The republic’s originated from the city of Rome. Therefore, the Romans used this new type of governing a country first, and gained tremendous amounts of benefits. The republic is praised so much that countries today have even taken parts of the set up of the republic and used it in their government. The Roman Republic revolutionized the Roman Civilization and has even played a minor role in the formation of the United States Constitution.
While at rock bottom of one’s life, each protagonist maintains sense of security by remembering his past. In Scott Momaday’s The Way to Rainy Mountain, Momaday reclaims his past by remembering the time he spends with his grandmother. Through his grandmother’s death Momaday recollects her: “standing at the wood stove on a winter morning and turning meat in a great iron skillet; sitting at the south window, bent above her beadwork, and afterwards when her vision failed . . . when the weight of the age came upon her; praying. I remember her most often at prayer” (2507). He strongly desires to be at her grave and yearns for belonging through visiting her spiritually. Momaday looks at her grave with despair instead of embracing all the life that she gave him. By Momaday reminiscing about his grandma, he loses hope and bec...
...ned with solving problems in the most amicable manner. One of the consequences of unethical practices in business world is that they solve short-term problems and pave way for mistrust. To regain the trust back from the public is not easy and this is costly to the company than anything else. Therefore, the issue of ethical advertising should be very critical in any organization especially if the company has to project and implement its long term goals. It is trust that is going sail the organization through to the attainment of long term goals. This is due to the fact trust creates consumer loyalty and this loyalty ensures a steady and growing market. Finally, though there is a proposal that law should be instituted to control unethical advertising, more should be invested in building the morals because it is these morals that lead to instillation of ethical values.
My grandfather may seem to be like every other grandfather, soft and caring. However, despite what one may assume my grandfather
... to the Treaty of Nanking creating new ports for foreigners and allowing them to live lives contrary to what was expected of the people of China. The Chinese man had become addicted and it was just getting easier for him to get the opium he needed to satisfy his need, but in order to attain the opium he was leaving behind everything that his country had taught him about his sense of self. The man was no longer the one that would be instilling the traditional Chinese values into the youth of his country; it would be the new foreigners like the British traders who had come to China to profit from the trade. The same traders who were selling the opium, that would have a greater influence on shaping China from a traditionally isolated country from foreign influence, to a country that would later become a major power in foreign trade and open to most foreign influence.
I don't have a lot of fantastic memories of childhood. There were no spectacular family adventures, no unique family projects that taught some sort of moral lesson, no out-of-the-ordinary holidays. We ate family meals together, but most of the time the children and adults lived in different worlds. The kids went to school, did homework, and played; the adults worked. I was lucky, though. When I wanted a little of both worlds, I could always turn to Grandpa.
Before I begin I would like to thank all of you here on behalf of my mother, my brother and myself, for your efforts large and small to be here today, to help us mark my fathers passing.
In America, there are many kinds of families. I decided to research parenting in the case that the Grandparent is a main caregiver. I also want to contrast the difference that parents have being a first-time parent, versus a being a parent as a grandparent. The book says, “In general, skipped-generation families have several strikes against them” but also says, “[the] discussion of grandparents who live with their grandchildren should not obscure the general fact that most grandparents enjoy their role…” (Berger, 486). With this, I am going to interview my sixty-seven-year-old grandma, she was forty-six when I was born and became a primary caregiver for me alongside my dad. I think that my grandma is going to say that she is glad that she was
When I think back to the days when I was a child, I think about all of my wonderful childhood memories. Often I wish to go back, back to that point in life when everything seemed simpler. Sometimes I think about it too much, knowing I cannot return. Yet there is still one place I can count on to take me back to that state of mind, my grandparent’s house and the land I love so much.
To make the best of who we are. Our parents were raised by our grandparents with similar beliefs and expectations, as were we. My grandfather has influenced my life in numerous ways. I have many memories of him, he has made me laugh through all the fun times that we had together, but he also made me cry. When I was a freshman my grandfather became deathly sick. As the months flew by and I stood by his side, he became increasingly ill. In the early spring of that year my grandfather passed away right before my eyes. That was an unforgettable moment in my life. My grandfather taught me to accept, to accept both life and death. He showed me that life moves on, people you love will leave you and that through it all it only makes us stronger in the end. It's loved ones in our lives, like my grandfather, who are the breath within us that give us courage to follow our hearts.
Memories consist of brief moments in a person’s life, which is stored away in the mind as a picture, movie, smell or even just a sound. If it was visibly to others, it would mean nothing, but to the exact person that experienced the memory, it is a hidden treasure. A treasure chest in the back of one’s head that can be opened, and reveal one’s entire life of beautiful and untouched memories. The question is just, if it is always such a good idea, to dwell at the memories. The short story; “In the National Gallery” by Doris Lessing, is processing the three ages in ones live; past, future and presence, through the eyes of an first person narrator. Through the narrators experience we discover, that living in the past can have great consequences. As one once said, “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin. ”
