Eulogy for Friend
My name is Rick. I live in Carmel, California, a place also known as paradise. I work at the US Naval Postgraduate School, as chairman of one of the largest operations research departments in the country.
I completed my PhD degree in OR here at Georgia Tech, in 1975. John White (then new to Tech, now Chancellor of the University of Arkansas) gave me the kernel of an idea and, more importantly, he administered the one stiff kick in the rump that I needed to start my dissertation. From then on, I was nurtured and guided by Donovan Young.
The Don – don’t ask me why, but I remember graduate students referring to Professor Young as "the Don" – was in many ways the old fashioned, romantic ideal of a college professor. He was so smart, he was so energetic and entertaining, and he was incredibly attentive to students’ needs and interests. He cared about the currency and applicability of what he taught, preparing new notes for each class, devising extremely inventive homework and test problems, always dreaming up new applications. He cared not only about the students’ learning. He cared about them as people. He had passion and compassion.
Let me talk about his intellect. Does anyone remember having a childhood fantasy about spying on your elementary school teachers out of school? Usually, those fantasies involved some role reversal. I’ll confess to a fantasy I imagined as a 24-year-old graduate student. I dreamt that all the professors of Georgia Tech’s Industrial and Systems Engineering department were locked in a classroom taking a comprehensive exam. This exam covered every ISyE subject at a fundamental level, and each problem demanded clever insight and creativity. The rules of engagement were simple: closed-book, no time limit, you can’t leave till every question is answered correctly. Got the picture? Quite a scene.
Well, guess who left the room first?
Yes, I think Don was that smart. My image of the scene even includes the Don’s exit: can’t you picture that big bear of a man who somehow managed to move with lightness, his eyes sparkling, a big Texas grin on his face, and he’s whistling! Has there ever been another person on this planet who could whistle two tunes at a time, out of both sides of his mouth, harmoniously?
You have to admit Don’s physicality was impressive. And that voice! If a big Delta jet was flying over the old ISyE Building and Don was lecturing with the windows open, he would drown out the plane.
Don grew up playing hockey, for he was playing in the OHL by the time he was 17. Unfortunately, Don never made it big, but he managed to make his way around the minor league system for a good 15 years. He played a few games in the NHL, attended many training camps, but nothing to brag about. But, that is where Don is different, for he will brag about his days on the ice. He will let every one know about his toughness, grit and determination. After his days as a minor league player, Don was hired on as the head coach for the Boston Bruins, where he experienced much success including a coach of the year award in 1976. It was in 1984 where Don found his true calling though, for it was that year where he accepted a job on the popular Hockey Night in Canada.

On behalf of my entire family, I want to thank all of you for your compassion and for being present here today. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Mauri-Lynne, and I'm Lionel's daughter. Dad was devoted to every one of you. We all hope that you'll share your memories of him with us, if not today then in the weeks and months to come.
When Richard lands his airplane, he meets Don. He talks with Don for several moments and, despite noticing some unusual quirks about Don, does not think that Don is too out-of the ordinary. Then he notices that Don’s plane is immaculate. It does not have any dirt or oil or any other evidence that it has been flown before. When Richard asks Don about this, Don tells him that there are things that Richard does not know. Later in the story, however, Richard learns more about Don and why he seems to be mysterious.
Eulogy for Son The Death of a Child. Not many people realize that the death of a child is NOT in accordance with God’s NORMAL scheme of things. It is not a natural. God did not mean for a child to go first. A child buries the parent.
In the play ‘Much ado about nothing’, Don John is a puppet whose strings are pulled by various characters and the society in which he lives. Although he does monkey businesses like every character in the play, he is the one who gets harshly judged and punished for it. His villainy is not an innate trait but rather, he chooses it to distinguish him from others.
Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert started with a story about Charles Bovary. Nonetheless when we first met Emma Bovary, there is no doubt in my mind that she is the central character in this story. Emma Bovary was a woman who craves wealth, happiness, passion and beauty and is will to do anything it takes to acquire all that she needs. She is very intelligent but was never granted the opportunity to get as mature as she needs. Being an adult, she allows her imaginations to run wild instead of sitting down and evaluate the things thoroughly. As the famous quote states “never judge a book by its cover”, Emma is a person who views things as being perfect or otherwise by the way it looks on the outside and never took the time to see what is underneath those beautiful outer coats. The people who always appear to be misleading, those are the people she gravitates to more but loathes the very few people who are actually exactly as they appear. Being that she is a country girl she isn’t expose to certain lifestyles, so having the opportunity to experience a higher society lifestyle, she would prefer to believe that for the aristocracy, life is definitely an filled with excitement and she is willing to live it to the fullest. She has a several flaws that are motivated by her desires and hunger to escalate socially and they are results of the situations she is currently in. The passion that she showcase somewhat dominate her childhood and ultimately her life. This story was created in a way that Madame Bovary would have to stand up and responsibility for her own deceitful act. The affairs that she have been engaged in has occurred because she wanted but never knew when they failed that she would be left lonely and hopeless. She was not onl...
For Don Corleone, it has brought out generosity and charity. He does favors for others, not expecting any in return. As a result of this he has obtained many new life long friends. I believe that the Don was a very giving man before he had his power.
The news of people dying and suffering, killings of women and children, and bombings by terrorists and militaries, has undoubtedly grabbed the world’s attention towards the Israel-Palestine conflict. While Palestinian children scream for their dead parents, the world’s leaders and academics initiated a frantic debate, trying hard to point out the real cause and viable solutions for the current situation. This has led to many peace initiatives by the international community that were unfortunately a devastating failure. This deadlock had left leaders and supporters of both sides blaming each other for their stubbornness, in some cases elevating the unrest in Israel and Palestine (Reynolds). In this difficult condition, it is hard for us to determine what actually caused the failure of the peace talks without being biased towards one side. Therefore, my goal in this essay is to examine the cause of the peace talks’ failure objectively by observing the history of past peace talks, the reasons for disagreement that are given by Palestine and Israel and the key issues discussed in peace talks. Finally, I will conclude my research by developing my stand on the causes based on the research I have conducted.
After recollecting her memory of the romance novels, Madame Bovary remembers the few precious moments in her life: the waltzes, lovers, etc. Suddenly, while remembering these cherished moments, she decides that she was never happy. Even though sh...
Theresa Smith was born on December 3, 1925 in Materson, NJ. She died in Williamsville on March 2, 2005, at age 80. Theresa Smith was great grandmother of one, grandmother of five of us, mother of three, sibling of three sisters and two brothers, and wife to one great man, my grandfather, Ron Smith.
Don and Michael are both powerful Godfathers that vary in many ways. Don became a Don because it was all that he really knew and he needed to take care of his family. On the other hand, Michael had a choice. In The Godfather, Michael rises to power as the head of the family. Michael’s character endures an intense change as the film goes on. At the beginning of the film, Michael seems to be a moral and an upright character, but that changes. Power is a major theme in The Godfather, and Michael and Don both pertain to this theme of power. Corruption is closely linked to that of power also, which is seen throughout this film.
I believe that every person in, in their own unique way, creates a legacy in their lifetime by which others can live long after that person has left us. For those of us who remain, Mildred Johnson has truly created a legacy to uphold and fulfill in our daily lives. I firmly believe that this carrying out is a true honor and responsibility by means of the various facets that Mildred has made her own.
For Emma, entering into a marriage with the very ordinary country doctor Charles Bovary marks the beginning of an unsatisfactory, restrictive, joyless domestic life. Emma and Charles exist in a world of intergenerational social stratification where a man’s background, occupation, and wealth are the determinants for his children’s place in the inflexible social hierarchy. The respective children of a “former assistant army surgeon” and working class rural farmer, Charles and Emma face the constraints of conventional middle-class morality and the expectation of a domestic life defined by mundane occupations and petty banalities (Flaubert 6). Emma Bovary’s frustration with a loveless marriage, nonexistent career opportunities, and low socioeconomic standing leads to a propensity for sentimental romanticism and the creation of an impractical, imaginative fa...
In the context of Christian education, the teacher performs his role by using lessons culled from the Bible and communicating them through lectures, seminars, or discussions. However, in order to be an effective teacher, I should expand on these lessons by providing real-life examples and hypothetical illustrations in order for the student to find relevance in the lessons taught. I should provide good models for the student to imitate, and in fact, I should also make sure that I am a good model myself by knowing and taking to heart all the lessons I teach. In other words, the instruction must be thorough. To ensure that I am fulfilling my role as teacher, I must provide an opportunity for the students to respond to the lesson. According to the Richards and Bredfeldt, when a student discovers a relationship between himself and the lesson, the “pathway to personal response stands open.” By making the lessons individually applied, decentralized and student-centered, but teacher-oriente...
