BACKGROUND PAPER ON EUGENE BULLARD
1. As a youth in grade school, I remember how it was always nice to be first. The first person to do everything was like being king for a day. I am sure we can relate in some way of how it feels to be first. Being first paves the way for followers to strive to accomplish the things you did to become first. Imagine being first, must have felt for Eugene Bullard, the first African American combat pilot. I know that a lot of people, including myself, thought that the first African American combat pilots were The Tuskegee Airmen. "He flew nearly 25 years before the first African American pilots graduated from Air Corps pilot training in 1942, at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama (African American Pilot Eugene Bullard, 1). Had it not been for famous firsts, such as Bullard, who helped pave the way for racial equality, I would not be able to sit in the same classroom with you today. "For 350 years, blacks in America's military have fought a dual fight- against their country's external enemies and against the internal enemy of racism," says Bernard C. Nalty, a historian in the Office of Air Force History (Nalty, preface). Military and civil leaders were divided on the policy of using blacks in armed combat, setting the pattern for exclusion and acceptance, by using blacks in time of crisis and ignoring them in times of peace. Through a remarkable combination of persistence, skill and luck, Eugene Bullard became the first African American combat pilot.
2. Eugene Bullard was born in 1894 and lived with his father in Columbus, Georgia. His father always talked of France as a country where whites and blacks were treated equally. The mere thought of racial equality was all the fuel Bullard needed to get his internal fire raging with a
dream of going to France. He hitch-hiked from Georgia to Virginia at age eighteen. He reached Virginia, where he stowed away on a ship to Scotland, and worked his way to France. He enlisted in the French Foreign Legion immediately after the start of World War I. After being transferred to a regular unit in the French army, Bullard was wounded twice, and was declared disabled. He then applied for pilot training with a French air service and was accepted on the basis of combat heroism, thus becoming the first African American fighter pilot.
Davis was serving as an ROTC instructor at Tuskegee Institute in 1940 when President Franklin Roosevelt became worried about his support among the black community during his third presidential election campaign. To solidify African-American support he promoted Benjamin Davis, Sr. to brigadier general and ordered the army air corps to create a black flying organization.
1. Dorie miller was awarded the Navy Cross for his courage and devotion of duty in the Navy during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Two years later he was missing in action which is understandable with the racism that was happening at that time. With President Roosevelt's signing of the Selective Service Act which did not allow the blacks and whites to intermingle. This caused anger amongst the black Americans. A. In a debate in 1851, famed abolitionist Wendell Phillips presented a moving and forceful argument for acceptance of African Americans into the military by telling the story of the Haitian general, Toussaint-Louverture. Phillips' message survives today, over a century later, not only as a tribute to the hero who rose from slavery to create the first black republic, but also as a compelling statement against racial discrimination. Expertly using a mix of literary devices, including juxtaposition, irony, metaphor, and personification, Phillips enables his audience to see, through the lens of the orator's mind, the ideals that he promotes.
They were involved in many military organization such as armorers, bombardiers, engineers, navigators, and maintenance and supply personnel. The airman fought two wars, one against overseas enemies, and one against racism within the American military. Leon also talked about her heroism and discrimination. "I think that is a tribute not only to your heroism, but to impact to continue shaping attitudes. Leon focused on how the airmen reached their goals, and honored them with accreditation and service.
Lawrence Douglas Wilder was born in Richmond, Virginia on January 17, 1931. He was named after abolitionist Fredrick Douglas and poet Paul Lawrence. He was from a large family, being the second youngest of 8 children, with one brother and six sisters. His father, Robert was a salesman and supervisor of agents for a black-owned insurance company. His mother Beulah (may also be Eunice depending on the source), worked as a maid. His grandparents, James and Agnes Wilder were slaves making him the grandson of slaves. His family lived in a poor and segregated neighborhood. Mr. Wilder said he remembered his childhood as “gentle poverty.” (Source 2)
Many African Americans participate in the U.S. Air Force today, but before World War II they were segregated from joining. They had very few rights and many believed they did not have the same talents as white Americans. These men wanted to make a difference by fracturing racial stereotypes in society; they wanted to prove that African Americans had talents and strengths just like other Americans did. African Americans came together in Tuskegee, Alabama to form the Tuskegee Air Force group and fought to change negative racial perceptions. World War II opened up several opportunities for African American men during and after the war. First of all, the blacks were able to join the military, the Navy and the Army Air Corps’ (Reinhardt and Ganzel 1). The African Americans were allowed to join the military because they were needed, but they would be trained separately and put in separate groups then the white men because America was still prejudice. (Reinhardt and Ganzel 1). The same went for the African Americans that joined the Navy, only they were given the menial jobs instead of the huge jobs (Reinhardt and Ganzel 1). Those studying the experience of African Americans in World War II consistently ask one central question: “Was World War II a turning point for African Americans?” In elaboration, does World War II symbolize a prolongation of policies of segregation and discrimination both on the home front and the war front, or does it represent the start of the Civil Rights Movement that brought racial equality? The data points to the war experience being a transition leading to the civil rights upheavals of the 1960s.
The Tuskegee Airmen were a fine example of many who had fought for equality between blacks and whites as well as many who had sought opportunity for blacks in those times, and had a high number of achievements and awards during their time in the military. Young Goodman Brown undergoes the hero’s journey in the story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The hero’s journey is a common guideline of events that many writers use in stories to show the physical, mental, and/or emotional transformation the main character or protagonist undergoes throughout the story. It starts with a call to adventure and a supernatural aid. It is then followed by a road of trials and a symbolic death. In the end, the character has a moment of epiphany or realization and then a return. Hawthorne uses all of these in order to show the loss of innocence in Young Goodman Brown as he experiences the hero’s journey.
William Edward Burghardt DuBois was born in 1868, two years after slavery was abolished, in Great Barrington, MA. Born a free man in the North, during the dawn of the twentieth century, W.E.B. DuBois was able to receive an extensive education. Throughout his life he grew more and more cognizant of the politics, education, religion, and economics that shaped the American system and separated the peoples that lived there. Although he was granted the fortune of education and freedom, he was forever torn between his dark coloring which distinguished him from others. Furthermore, he was disillusioned by his unfulfillment of American ideals.
In order to success on the home-front and to be able to support the troops, African Americans and women were given identities to help with victory. In order to success on the warfront, rapid effort of expansion in both industrial and military power was needed. On both the home and warfront, victory highly depended on the continuous provision of warfare such as ammunition, guns, tanks, naval vessels and planes as, “The necessity of winning the war opened the economy to millions of black men and women who surged into defense plants” (African Americans and the Military: World War II and Segregation). Without the support of other ethnic races and involvement of typical household women, the American Dream would not have been achievable. For the sole purpose of achieving that well desired dream alongside the American pursuit of happiness, Americans allowed discriminated individuals to support their victory as it would not have been possible without them. In the story "Young Goodman Brown", Nathaniel Hawthorne uses a dream to illustrate a young man’s loss of innocence, understanding of religion and his community. Through this dream, the main character Young Goodman realizes that the people that he surrounds himself with are not who he believes them to be. The story of “Young Goodman Brown” focuses on the unconscious mind. The characters in this short-story are able to represent the struggle of Young Goodman’s superego, ego, and id.
