In a story called “A Worn Path,” created by Eudora Welty. The main protagonist of “A Worn Path” named Phoenix Jackson is symbolic to the mythical Egyptian bird called the Phoenix. Because both represent a goal, a journey, and rebirth.
Both go on a journey… Now this whole story is about Phoenix going on a journey to town to get medicine for her potentially dead grandson. The trip itself is long and dangerous. Showing the struggles she has to go through just to get something vital, like the Phoenix. When a Phoenix is about to die it goes to the city of Heliopolis, which in Egyptian mythology means “Sun City.” The trip to the city is dangerous enough, but if the Phoenix doesn’t make it to the city on time it will die, and will stay dead. Like what Phoenix is doing for her grandson, so that he could live.
Both characters have a goal. Phoenix, despite her age, goes through all these struggles to reach her goal. Which is to get the medicine and save her grandson so he can live. Also said on page. 827, the Nurse even says that Phoenix makes these trips for her grandson. Like the Phoenix, it makes these trips when it’s about to die. As said before, the story is about Phoenix going into town, but this isn’t her first time making this trip. She’s made this trip many times, hence the name “A Worn Path.” She has traveled this path many times, so it gets old. On page. 827 the Nurse tells the Receptionist who Phoenix is. She says, “Oh, that’s just old Aunt Phoenix. She doesn’t come for herself - she has a little grandson. She makes these trips just as regular as clockwork.” Showing that Phoenix has made these trips a lot for this medicine. The medicine represents rebirth to Phoenix's grandson. Like the Phoenix, and how it has a certain amount of years to live, so it makes the same trip to Heliopolis many, many times. Over, and over again, which also would become old.
