Ethics, Duty and Sexuality in Book IV of Virgil’s Aeneid
Book IV of Virgil’s Aeneid depicts the doomed romance of Aeneas, Trojan refugee and destined father of Rome, and Dido, expatriate Phoenician noble and Queen of Carthage. Called away to Italy by his obligation to the Fates and to his Roman descendants, Aeneas abruptly ends his passionate sexual relationship with Dido. He goes on to defeat the native Latin tribes and founds the civilization that will eventually become the Roman Empire. Dido, however, is destroyed by passion, committing suicide after her lover leaves. Beyond the beautifully tragic love story of these two people, we find in the Aeneid a reflection on the roles of ethics, duty and sexuality in the lives of all human beings. The usefulness of Virgil’s characters to the Christian life can be seen when we consider the philosophy of St. Augustine of Hippo, whose work in large part attempted to diagnose and correct the errors of Roman thought.
If Augustine’s views on free will are taken to be true, then the binding prophecies and supernatural interventions of the Aeneid emerge as fictional devices which serve to channel the characters into archetypal roles. In other words, characters ruled by destiny remain useful as universal examples to readers who believe themselves to have free will. As I do not consider myself to be living under the binding prophecies of the Fates or any “orders of the gods” (I have yet to receive any visits from my goddess-mother), I must regard the story of Aeneas and Dido as an allegory representing some of the choices open to my free will. Either their romance must be wrong, morality therefore demanding an end to it, or there is nothing really wrong with their sexual relations...

In light of Augustine’s thought on free will, which for the most part I accept, I must conclude that Virgil has given me two clearly negative examples in the Aeneid; in other words, Virgil has communicated to me through Aeneas and Dido two of the possible human reactions to wrong love, reactions which are themselves sinful and must be avoided in my situation if I am to live in accordance with God’s will.

A twenty-first century reading of the Iliad and the Odyssey will highlight a seeming lack of justice: hundreds of men die because of an adulteress, the most honorable characters are killed, the cowards survive, and everyone eventually goes to hell. Due to the difference in the time period, culture, prominent religions and values, the modern idea of justice is much different than that of Greece around 750 B.C. The idea of justice in Virgil’s the Aeneid is easier for us to recognize. As in our own culture, “justice” in the epic is based on a system of punishment for wrongs and rewards for honorable acts. Time and time again, Virgil provides his readers with examples of justice in the lives of his characters. Interestingly, the meaning of justice in the Aeneid transforms when applied to Fate and the actions of the gods. Unlike our modern (American) idea of blind, immutable Justice, the meanings and effects of justice shift, depending on whether its subject is mortal or immortal.
Not only does Virgil present women as completely vulnerable to their emotions, but he also shows the problems that arise when these women engage in decisions where they put their own feelings ahead of their people. Virgil explicitly shows women neglecting important responsibilities when he describes passages concerned with Dido’s affair and her death, the Trojan women burning their own ships, Queen Amata’s opposition to Latinus’s proposal and her tragic death. Once Dido falls in love with Aeneas, Virgil uses a simile to describe the wound that Dido suffers from. The flame keeps gnawing into her tender marrow hour by hour, and deep in her heart the silent wound lives on. Dido burns with love—the tragic queen.
Augustine views Ambrose as God’s “devoted servant” (Book V, Ch.13) who guides him to the true fate. When Augustine listens to Ambrose’s eloquent sermon, he states, “I began to believe Catholic faith… especially since I had heard one passage after another in the Old Testament figuratively explained” (Book V, Ch.14). At first, Augustine is only interested in Ambrose’s speaking style. However, as the preaching moves on, Augustine gradually believes Christianity because he notices that the way Ambrose interprets Bible may be the theology he is looking for. Similarly, through public sermons, Ambrose guides Augustine to interpret the Old Testament spiritually so that Augustine “clearly see a light to guide [his] steps” (Book V, Ch.14). Furthermore, Ambrose’s influence on Augustine also mirrors the way Sibyl teaches Aeneas in the Aeneid. In Virgil’s poem, The Aeneid, a picture is painted of a very virtuous roman hero who remains pious and loyal to his people. This is the picture of Aeneas’ life. It is shown in the poem, that the costs that come with holding these virtues greatly outweigh the rewards. The rewards, although small, are on the inside of the hero and the costs are large and are on the outside. It is critical to follow your destiny no matter what it is, but that is a virtue that not only Roman heroes, but also all Romans must possess.

By no means is there anything wrong with this approach, but in many ways, the entire poem could be viewed as a “propaganda” piece; while it might have served to enlighten, educate, and create a cohesive and uplifting story for the Roman populace, the poem lacked depth and a more profound exploration of human intricacies. When discussing the fate of Aeneas, a thought provoking question is posed that is commonly debated. If Aeneas is commanded by fate, does he have free will? It is important to approach this question with a solid understand of fate. There are two common sides to the debate of whether Aeneas had free will or not. One view believes Aeneas had no choice but to follow his destiny because he was commanded by fate, and prophesied to found the race that will one day build Rome. The other side states Aeneas did indeed have free will, and even though his fate was set, room is available within his fate for events to change. One can argue Aeneas makes some of his own choices, but no particular detail of his life is untouched. Destiny determines that the Trojans will found a city in Italy, but it does not stipulate how that will happen. This is where room is left for free will. After much research and considering the views of many commentators and the proof they showed, the answer can simply be found by going back to the text of The Aeneid.
