Description of Ethical Dilemma
Social Workers just like any other professions are constantly faced with an ethical complex situation which require the social worker to choose between two ethical values in their performance of duty. The ethical dilemma is when the social worker is feeling stuck and does not know what to do, usually a decision has to be made in that situation. The social worker has to make a choice at the expense of the other. The final decision could be morally right or wrong depending of the practice the social worker finds his or herself. Ethical dilemmas are often at times inevitable and a choice has to be made. Ethics are the moral that helps shape our actions and behaviors in a certain direction. The program is committed to enriching the lives of participants by providing quality clinical and social services in a safe supportive and stimulating environment. The program offers a safe, nurturing environment that allows the participants to obtain the daily support they require while remaining in their own homes. The program was jointly built by Bethany Homes, Penacook Place, and the Northeast Family YMCA to offer support for the elderly. The participant I was working with, at the agency is a 65 year-old Caucasian living with his ex-wife, daughter, and two grandchildren in an apartment in Haverhill. The participant has a history of suicidal attempts by overdosing. He was referred to the agency by his therapist for medical monitoring, social stimulation, and emotional concerns in a structured environment. These concerns include a short attention span, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), ETOH, Coronary Heart Disease, Depression, a Schizoaffective disorder which manifests itself mainly in the agency and home environment. I was confronted with the issue of confidentiality that challenged my understanding of how to ethical issue was addressed. I got a call from the participant’s ex-wife that the participant has started using marijuana and she wanted to share this information with me. The ex-wife wanted us (social workers) to schedule a meeting including herself, the participant and me at the agency. Knowing very well that there have been number studies on the effects on cannabis use and its interruption on psychotropic medication. The NAWS Code of Ethics identifies several values such as self-determination, protection of confidentiality, equal distribution of resources and the promotion of cultural diversity in service provision that social work must uphold. In a related situation, the participant stated that his daughter was misusing his money he gets from his Supplemental Security Income (ISSI) disability. This was a grave issue amounting to elderly abuse.
