Ability to identify potential ethical dilemmas as a community services worker.
There are various potential ethical dilemmas that relate to Bree and Fiona in the case study, these include. Fiona and I are currently working a double shift which can leave us tired, irritable and less likely to follow our duty of care. Fiona admits to have a personality clash with Bree which can be a conflict of interest and lead to a prejudice against Bree. There is a breach of confidentiality as a resident tells Fiona of Bree’s drug history and Fiona uses that unconfirmed information to confront Bree. Confronting Bree with her past drug use, an a public space that leads to an argument is also an ethical dilemma. …show more content…

These ethical dilemmas relate to the principals and codes set out by the Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA). Standard One which relates to a commitment to ethical practice, human rights, individual worth and social justice. This is broken when she confronted Bree in a public setting which lead to an argument and sent Bree outside, this is broken as Fiona is not showing the client respect or human dignity. Standard Two relates to the legal, regulatory and statutory framework that underpins the rights of the clients and whom they work with. This is broken when she sent Bree outside as she is breaking The children's and Young Person care and protection Act 1988 as she sent a young person who is at risk away from the residents place of safety at night. Fiona also broke the law in relation to confidentiality as she accepted confidential information from a resident about Bree and then confronted Bree with that information. Standard three relates to the workers continuous professional development and professional supervision throughout their career. This standard was broken as their was not adequate supervision on site as the workers had to call a supervisor to ask for advice. Us as the worker also broke this standard as we are responsible and accountable for our own actions and should of reported Fiona’s behaviour towards Bree. Standard four relates to the clients rights. This standard was broken when Fiona locked Bree outside as Bree is a young person at risk and should have a safe place to stay at night. It was also broken as Fiona discriminates against Bree by judging her on her past behaviour as when the other residents and Bree walk in laughing she assumes it is drug related and pulls only her aside and confronts her about her past drug use. Fiona also disadvantages and disempowers Bree with the inherent balance to power and authority by confronting her and forcing her
