One of the first words words to descrive ethan nature was as a reserved man who took hes obligations onto others seriosuly. The story conveys that ethans life as quite miserble for a long time. And hes unfiufuled life was contuinusly shown in the story. When he was young he persued hes dream of being a enginer sadly that was interrupted by the sudden death of his father. He took responsiblity of taking care of his mother, which was his first obligation, putting his dreams and wishes on hold to never be continued. Ethan is the man that suffers in silence, when it comes to alot of aspects in his life. Inculuding his wife “zenna” his very complicated issues with zeenaa causes a inner battle with himself. when matties caharcter is presented its clear to see ethan is attracted to her kind and wild like nature. The relationship he shares with both these women is completly diffrent. The relation ship he shares with zenna is, i belive one of the reasons he feels the way he feels for mattie is because he is used to being demmend and unmasculined by zenna so when he feels needed he has this protective mindset when it comes to mattie, almost like he is reganing hes manly hood. Silence. Through out the book ethan constantly suffers in silence both emotinally and verbally. For example zenna and ethans relationsip has very minmal comunication. That was one of the mnay trgides of the story each one of the main characters was silently in thier own bubble but they never comunicated. Another major theme in the story which relates to the first one is isolation, etha is imprisoned in the farm, he is phiscally isolated from the world having very few contact with people outside the farm.
