China Garland Dr.Holland Reflection Paper 1 In class we read Estrange labour which was about Karl Marx and how he believed the economic system of capitalism society divides itself into two classes: bourgeoisie and the proletariat. In this situation the workers not only suffer being poor but also experience separation from the world. This estrangement occurs because the worker is so much into making the product and not their outside life to where they become separated with world. He help build this world of objects but does not own it. This first type of separation from the world is known as estrangement which the worker is the product of his work. So basely the worker is working hard to get money and help support their families and they barely realize they are been oppressed because they know they need the money to support their family. Also he talks about the workers and how they don’t enjoy what they do so just do the work to get it over with. Another thing about the workers they are so use of making this product till they don’t have to instruction or look to see if it being made right it’s kind of like they are program like robots. Some more things estrange labour talk about was Marx felt people were being bought for their labour. Also he talks about how people work so hard they never become wealthy because they were getting paid so little. When people only work for money 9 out 10 I’m pretty sure they don’t enjoy their jobs and this is what Marx was saying and after a while people become dehumanize and start producing more products to either get paid or just to get the job done . I also agree with Marx about the classes which do divide our society into two. I feel this is correct because our society is ran like this today for example the people who own business such as the bourgeois is rich in today world and didn’t have to work hard to get where their at now because of their background and where they came from because their generation was probably wealthy and pass it down to them. Now for the proletariats their family probably wasn’t wealthy and working hard for their money is all they know in order to take care of home so they have no choice but to work
Marx’s idea of the estrangement of man from the product of his labor described the suffering of countless hours or work by the laborer, contributing to the production of a product that he could not afford with the wages he made. He helped to produce a product that only those wealthier than he could afford. As the society around him became more object-oriented, he became increasingly more alienated. In the lager, one factor that distanced the laborer from his product was that he no longer worked for a wage, but for survival. In Marx’s opinion, the cause of poverty has always been due to the struggle between social classes, with one class keeping its power by suppressing the other classes. He claims the opposing forces of the Industrial Age are the bourgeois and the proletarians. Marx describes the bourgeois as a middle class drunk on power. The bourgeois are the controllers of industrialization, the owners of the factories that abuse their workers and strip all human dignity away from them for pennies. Industry, Marx says, has made the proletariat working class only a tool for increasing the wealth of the bourgeoisie. Because the aim of the bourgeoisie is to increase their trade and wealth, it is necessary to exploit the worker to maximize profit. This, according to Marx, is why the labor of the proletariat continued to steadily increase while the wages of the proletariat continued to steadily decrease.
Marx believes there is a true human nature, that of a free species being, but our social environment can alienate us from it. To describe this nature, he first describes the class conflict between the bourgeois and the proletariats. Coined by Marx, the bourgeois are “the exploiting and ruling class.”, and the proletariats are “the exploited and oppressed class” (Marx, 207). These two classes are separated because of the machine we call capitalism. Capitalism arises from private property, specialization of labor, wage labor, and inevitably causes competition.
Division of labor created alienation for the proletarians, this is why Marx suggest abolishing the private property. The lower class stop living for themselves and live to make their owners rich. This is a problem because everyone that does not belong to the upper class suffer economically and mentally. This scene implies his detachment from his job as a result of his perception that the production process he is involved in is merely a sequence of repetitive routine that does not provide any intrinsic incentive for him to excel or room for him to determine how his job is to be conducted. Thus, similar to the product of his labor appearing like an alien entity against him, the productive process in this case becomes something that “exists out of him” (Marx, 1844). In the same vein, Li is portrayed in China Blue to be alienated from her act of producing jeans due to the repetitive and monotonous routine of cutting threads daily over long hours. However, one scene in the film that featured Li’s supervisor exclaiming that Li and her co-workers were able to execute all these productive activities even when they are asleep indicates that Li as an assembly line worker, in comparison to Peter, a software engineer, may be denied to a greater extent of her ability to exercise control over how work is being done. It is my interpretation that man is alienated from his labour because he is not the reaper. of what he sows. Because he is never the recipient of his efforts, the labourer lacks identity with what he creates.
In conclusion, Marx states that the worker is alienated from his own life as well as individuality. This level of estrangement from one’s own life can be equated to slavery as he cannot think, make decision or plan for his future life but rather the capitalist is his owner. Labor camps tend to characterize workers as objects which should be act or behave as normal human beings but are required to follow a set routine of activities in the production of products.
In the Communist Manifesto it is very clear that Marx is concerned with the organization of society. He sees that the majority individuals in society, the proletariat, live in sub-standard living conditions while the minority of society, the bourgeoisie, have all that life has to offer. Marx’s theory of alienation is the process by which social organized productive powers are experienced as external or alien forces that dominate the humans that create them. He believes that production is man’s act on nature and on himself. Man’s relationship with nature is his relationship with his tools, or means of production. Man’s relationship with himself is fundamentally his relationship to others. Since production is a social concept to Marx, man’s relationship with other men is the relations of production. Marx’s theory of alienation specifically identifies the problems that he observed within a capitalist society. He noted that workers lost determination by losing the right to be sovereign over their own lives. In a capitalist society, the workers, or Proletariats, do not have control over their productions, their relationship with other producers, or the value or ownership of their production. Even though he identifies the workers as autonomous and self-realizing, the Bourgeoisie dictates their goals and actions to them. Marx’s theory of alienation describes the separation of things that naturally belong together. For Marx, alienation is experienced in four forms. These include alienation from ones self, alienation from the work process, alienation from the product and alienation from other people. Workers are alienated from themselves because they are forced to sell their labor for a wage. Workers are alienated from the process because they don’t own the means of production. Workers are alienated from the product because the product of labor belongs to the capitalists. Workers do not own what they produce. Workers are alienated from other people because in a capitalist economy workers see each other as competition for jobs. Thus for Marx, labor is simply a means to an end.
Most of us own neither the tools and machinery we work with nor the products that we produce--they belong to the capitalist that hired us. But everything we work on and in at some point comes from human labor. The irony is that everywhere we turn, we are confronted with the work of our own hands and brains, and yet these products of our labor appear as things outside of us, and outside of our control.
Karl Marx emphasized a lot on the importance of socialism in society. In his theory, socialism was the only way to end the huge in socio-economic classes. According to Marx class is determined by property associations not by revenue or status. It is determined by allocation and utilization, which represent the production and power relations of class. Marx’s differentiate one class from another rooted on two criteria: possession of the means of production and control of the labor power of others. The major class groups are the capitalist also known as bourgeoisie and the workers or proletariat. The capitalist own the means of production and purchase the labor power of others. Proletariat is the laboring lower class. They are the ones who sell their own labor power. Class conflict to possess power over the means of production is the powerful force behind social growth.
