Recently, the topic of whether or not college athletes should be paid has been a trending topic in the sports industry. One side of the argument is that the NCAA is making millions of dollars at sporting events hosted by these athletes, and the athletes don’t get any of it. This is a valid argument because the athletes are dedicated, hard-working students that spend many hours training and practicing, and they are representing their universities. However, opposing arguments are claiming that since college athletes already receive full scholarships, they shouldn’t be paid extra, especially because they are students first, and athletes second. One reason why college athletes should be paid is because they spend an average of 40 hours a week practicing and training, and they don’t have enough time to get a full-time job. Even though some people may argue that the athletes are already receiving a full scholarship, they still have to pay for food, clothes, personal items, and …show more content…
When students first graduate from college and are finally living on their own, they must be able to start a career and manage their financial plans wisely. However, many athletes are not able to do this so easily. According to a recent report published by the NCAA, about 60% of NBA players are broke just five years after retirement (Patterson). Most of the time, however, financial failure is blamed on the athletes trusting corrupt financial advisors, and lavish spendings (Patterson). This means that since athletes have not been paid or had time to get a job, they have no idea how to make smart decisions when it comes to finances. Also, when the student athletes are being paid, they aren’t as stressed about how they will be able to afford food and other necessities, and when they are less stressed, they typically get better
College athletes should not be paid it will ruin college sports forever. Some people believe that college athletes should be paid by the school because of all of the hard work they put in however they shouldn’t be paid because there is no fair way to pay every college athlete. There are many reasons that college athletes shouldn’t be paid one of the main reasons is that colleges don’t have enough money, the second reason is that they already get money in the form of scholarships, and there is no fair way to pay each college athlete.
Tyson Hartnett of The Huffington Post once said “Even with any type of scholarship, college athletes are typically dead broke.” This quote regards a tremendous controversy that has been talked about for the past few years. He talks about whether or not college athletes should be paid for their duties. Despite the fact college athletes are not professionals, they should most certainly be paid for playing for their respective schools due to many factors. These factors include health risks and the income bring in for their colleges as well as to the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
In summary college athletes should be paid because they are too busy to have a job, the NCAA has enough money and they can put in salary caps so everybody get paid
College athletes juggle busy academic and practice schedules all throughout their stressful weeks, so why shouldn't they be compensated for their time dedicated to sports? NCAA rules strictly prohibits players from being paid for all the hard work they do to protect “amateurism”, but are you really an amateur putting in over 40 hours a week between practice and other activities? Although students earn a college scholarship, that doesn’t cover living expenses, and access to a degree at the end of their career, players should be paid because schools, coaching staffs and major corporations are profiting off their free labor.
Until just recently according to an article in the Harvard Journal, “in the past twelve years, the amount of money generated by [football and basketball] has increased nearly 300%, such that they now fund almost all other sports programs” (Meshefejian). This points out that if student athletes were given a salary, the only athletes that would receive it are those in basketball and football. The less popular sports athletes would either switch to these two sports, or continue playing the sport they love while their colleagues thrive in the sport they love while getting an
Many people can easily picture this scene in their minds: the roaring crowds, the smell of easy- to-eat foods, and the thousands of people all dressed in the same colors. That’s a description of game day at a major college. College sports bring in a lot of money, yet their players don’t receive any money. Many people view this as something that needs to be changed while others believe that only professionals should be compensated. In the essays “Let Stars Get Paid” and “College Athletes Should Not Be Paid”, both authors give their opinions on whether or not college athletes should be paid. College athletes should not be paid because they already receive many benefits from being athletes.
Today there are over 450,000 college athletes and the National College Athletics Association (NCAA) faces a difficult decision on whether or not college athletes should be paid. Many people believe that they should and many believe they should not. There are several benefits that college’s athletes receive for being a student athlete. Why should they receive even more benefits than their scholarship and numerous perks?
Ever since college students started playing sports, back in 1879 when Harvard played Yale in the first collegiate sports game, the question of whether college athletes should be paid was addressed. From that point on athletes, coaches, and college administrators have brought forward points agreeing or disagreeing with the notion of paying college students. The students argue that they deserve to be paid due to the revenue that they bring for the college and because of the games they play and the championships they win. At first the idea of paying college athletes was out of the question, but now the argument has gone from a simple yes or no to a heated debate. Since college athletes are given a free education, they should not also be paid.
There has been an extensive debate over the years about college athletes being paid and I honestly don’t see why there is a debate about it at all. The NCAA has strict rules about players receiving benefits from the school in forms of helping players and their families in the form of paychecks or even helping pay bills. College sports bring in an enormous amount of money for the schools every year and are expected to be given nothing in return. Sports do not only bring in money to schools but also more students and fans. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) have taken several players’ records and rewards from them for the simple fact of getting benefits from the school and that is just not acceptable (Allen 115). Athletes are just like every other student in the way of having to pay for housing, food, bills, and more. Having to balance school and sports gives athletes no time to have jobs which means they do not have a way to bring in money to pay for the essentials of going to
One of the biggest reasons on why college athletes should be paid is while they are attending school full time. They are basically holding down a full time job as well. Many college coaches
Donald Trump idea of banning abortions will cause a huge problem for women across America. According to the “Anti-abortion protesters hope for change under Donald Trump article,” women and men who join the “March for life” are protesting change in the abortion laws. The author gives different views of people’s opinion about Trump banning abortions, and explains Trump’s plans to do to the pro-life justice supreme court and Republican government. Anti-abortionist is working together on getting rid of “Roe v Wade” by making it known worldwide. Roe v Wade is “a landmark decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that declared a pregnant woman is entitled to have an Abortion until the end of the first trimester of pregnancy without any interference by the
College athletes should be paid because they are basically working for the school. When a student gets a scholarship to a college for a sport they are expected to practice with the team and without the team, so on their free time. College athletes go way over the maximum amount of hours they are allowed to practice with the team. A 2011 survey, from the article Should College Athletes Be Paid?, states “The NCAA has a limit of 20 hours of training per week, D1 football players on average practice 43 hours a week, baseball 42.1 hours a week, and men’s basketball 39.2 hours a week”(Walch). With

Most of them receiving all inclusive scholarships that cover all the costs of their education. They are also in a position to make a reputation for themselves in the sporting world preparing them for the next step. The ongoing debate whether student athletes should be paid has been going on for years. These athletes bring in millions of dollars for their respective schools and receive zero in return. Many will argue that they do receive payment, but in reality it is just not true. Costs associated with getting a college education will be discussed, information pertaining to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and benefits student athletes receive. First, I’ll start with costs associated with college and most of all why student athletes should be paid!
College athletes should not be paid Do you think college athletes should be paid? Many people think college athletes should be paid like professional athletes, while others think they shouldn’t because they are basically already getting paid with scholarships. College Athletes should not be paid to play because they’re basically already getting paid with scholarships, schools might not make as much money as others, players might think the pay is unfair, and if one sports program gets paid, then all the other programs will demand to be paid.
To this day, some college athletes are not able to finish school because they run low on money. Some of them do not have a choice, but to go home and help support their families because they do not make enough money support while being in college. This adds up another reason why college athletes should be paid. If they got paid the money they worked hard for they would be able to share that money with their families and build a stronger
