There is no question that the need for mental health professionals is at an all-time high. When I think about how I want to contribute to the world through my vocation, I think of this need. I am eager to be a small part of filling a need and positively impacting the world around me. My personal motivation to become a Licensed Professional Counselor comes from my personal background and my inherent desire to help others and make a positive impact. I am thrilled to pursue a graduate degree with a Masters in Counseling. I am eager to build on the education I received from Samford University. I look forward to being a part of a program and under leadership that can help develop my counseling focus skills. I am interested in mental health, family, children / adolescents, developmental trauma, counseling, and religious trauma. Since regularly seeing my counselor, I have been made aware that my past impacts all of my interpersonal relationships, worldview, my beliefs and religion, how I expect people to treat me, and so much more. I am deeply motivated by my own experience of becoming a counselor and have the honor to positively impact others as I have been. In addition to my own experience in counseling, my family and I have been deeply impacted by its benefits. My mother is plagued with mental illness. As you can imagine, that has been difficult for me and hurt me. On the other hand, it has shaped me to be highly sensitive to other’s feelings and interpersonal situations. As an adolescent, I coped by pushing my emotions down, ignoring them. In retrospect, I am grateful and in awe that we are designed with the resilience to develop coping mechanisms.
