Common hour was held in multipurpose room A of the Frank G. Pogue student center on September 12th, 2017 with an attendance of around 40 students. The goal listed for this common hour was to explain what classes to plan for junior and senior year and to give instructions on how to schedule and apply for internships. This common hour was our last departmental meeting. I though the meeting was going to over view the next few weeks and how to start thinking about the things we are going to need in the coming weeks and semesters.
Our session began with asking the group if we had been successful using the ideas on how to acclimate to college life and if we had figured out how to use time management. Dr. Hedderick said at this point we are seasoned college students and should start to realize where we need to do additional work to improve our academic standing. We discussed junior year, this included the classes we are going to take and what semester. Next, we talked about how to get your foot in the door at a medical facility by completing an internship during the summer between junior and senior year. Internships are not mandatory but they can give you a leg up in senior year and after graduating by being familiar at a possibly employer. Dr. Hedderick discussed where to sign up to meet with your advisor to go over the “game plan” of the next semester a few weeks before scheduling occurs. At this meeting, your “plan” is made into a plan A, plan B, and plan C and you receive your personal identification number or PIN which you need to register. Dr. Hedderick explained in what order scheduling would happen, what leans and holds were and what a true conflict in scheduling is. Scheduling doesn’t need to be hectic and stressful, if you prepare for all the options and talk to the advisor with adequate time
In view of this “illness,” junior year also takes a toll on individuals. There is the ACT and the pressure to obtain a certain score to receive a scholarship or to be admitted into a dream school. Presently, my extracurricular and academic interests are combined in my two year Health Science class. The class provides real-life medical situations that I may come in contact with in the future. Like any health science class, we study the body, in both its’ functional and dysfunctional state. This survey class also includes an introduction to equipment, medical protocol, and ethical issues. A sense of teamwork guides our procedures. Next semester, I will study at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Ramstein High School’s Career Practicum program. After initial on-the-job application of classroom learning, we will work with patients, supervised by the hospital staff. Living so close to a hospital that services thousands of seriously injured patients every year provides opportunities that other students lack, even in their college programs.
Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often misunderstood about college life. The first is the financial aspect of college. Second, is the relationship between the professors and students. Third is time management. These three factors play an important role in why people are afraid to go down the path to college.
On January 25, the Claflin student body met up to begin the spring semester of 2018. As a visionary at Claflin University, our vision at Claflin University is to be perceived as the main 21st century institution of advanced education. As students, our undertaking is to sparkle inside and outside of the classrooms as we plan to end up becoming the next dynamic visionaries of the 21st century. We should remain grounded and together to make a solid college much more grounded. As a new semester starts it is imperative to have goals and keep up an objective in life to accomplish your goals. In “Choosing Success in College and Life”, Carol Kanar exposes students to the foundational skills that they will need to develop in order to be successful in the college setting. Effective interpersonal skills and understanding that people are the biggest resource can be two of the biggest factors in how a student assimilates to campus life. Students can be intimidated by all of the offices and professional titles that surround them when entering this new surrounding. It is important that students understand that their desire to succeed is met by college professionals’ mutual desire to see the same. The blueprint for this success should first begin with the students’ inner belief in themselves. Second, the student should familiarize themselves with all that the college has to offer by way of various supportive offices, support groups, and clubs. Finally, the students should begin to set scholastic, life, and financial goals for themselves.
At the moment I am currently a rising sophomore who seek to gain exposure in the medical field by participating in internships to obtain experience. Health Career Connection best aligns with my goal of becoming a pediatrician by working with preceptors and mentors who can expose me to different aspects of the medical field. My ideal internship experience has networking and professional development components to mold me into a well grounded professional. By participating in this summer internship I will enhance the skills I have already acquired and improve on my weaknesses as I seek to grow as a professional health care provider. Learning about the roles of administrative and clinical professionals, being acquainted with health care ethics are interest I want to be familiar with. "Tomorrow is the first day of what I will become." I wrote this in my diary the night before my first day of college. I was anxious as I imagined the stereotypical college room: intellectual students, in-depth discussions about neat stuff, and of course, a casual professor sporting the tweed jacket with leather elbows. I was also ill as I foresaw myself drowning in a murky pool of reading assignments and finals, hearing a deep, depressing voice ask "What can you do with your life?" Since then, I've settled comfortably into the college "scene" and have treated myself to the myth that I'll hear my calling someday, and that my future will introduce itself to me with a hardy handshake. I can't completely rid my conscience from reality, however. My university education and college experience has become a sort of fitful, and sleepless night, in which I have wonderful dreams and ideas, but when I awaken to apply these aspirations, reality sounds as a six thirty alarm and my dreams are forgotten.
Although I have great goals to help people, my grand wish cannot be granted without a great amount of effort on my part. I decided to take part in activities that would help me reach my goals and to ready myself for that field of work. My extracurricular activities and my electives showed proof of my interest in the medical field over time. Various factories, hospitals, police units, and firefighting squads are required to have people on call during all hours of the night. While this requirement does benefit the greater population, it requires a set of employees to stay up all night: working. Although these shifts are necessary for companies to produce products, or to be alert in case of emergencies, there are many downfalls to working this extra time. The care for and safety of employees should be top priority over the amount of product, profit, and similar factors. Understanding the risks that employees face when working night shifts is one issue that should be made more apparent to the supervisors and corporate workers of companies, enabling them to take necessary precautions
This calls a need for people especially students in college to warm up to the fact that if they are unable to manage their time appropriately while in school it is apparent that as they transition into their working life they will demonstrate the same effects still while on the job.
To think that my first semester of college will be over this friday makes me realize how fast time flies. The first few weeks of college were tough, tiring and full of anxiety. Being in a new environment, a different state and not knowing one single person was something that I did not prepare myself for. Throughout all of the tears and the frustrations, I had to constantly remind myself that I am at The University of Akron to gain an education and become a successful individual.
I nervously opened the doors to my future, hoping for the best for myself. At first, I believed departing to class would be simple, but when the bell rang for the first time I had no idea what class room goes where and how busy the halls were going to be. Suddenly, the entire world around me scrambled to class, and on occasions bumping each other along the way; it was a widespread panic for most of the freshmen. Time management is one of the most crucial factors to college success for every student in college. Firstly, while living on campus, time usually isn’t an issue to students because they live on school grounds. There are many advantages that come with time and one of them is getting to class on time. However, this is actually the opposite for commuters because getting to class on time is quite a struggle. They have to struggle to wake up earlier than usual in order to use the public transportation. Students living on campus also have more access to on-site facilities because they don’t have to worry about going home so there is no time limit on how long they occupy these areas. An example is staying in the library because this is where you can get help from tutors on subjects you are struggling with. Also, they can use the writing center for as long as it is open without worrying about time. Long working hours continue to be one of the largest health concerns in the world. Currently, the world population has become so busy due to the pressure from harsh economic conditions. People are therefore spending long working hours in the workplace, which is an aspect that has negative impact on their health conditions. Statistics from Working Condition Survey indicates that approximately 30% of workers residing in European Union believe that their health is at risk due to the hours they spent in the workplace (Gurung, 2010:16)
Most of us would agree that college is one of the most exciting, yet most challenging times of our lives. It is typically our first time living away from home for an extended period of time.
