Working with children is satisfying experience knowing you can touch and change their future. However, it’s also challenging as every child’s situation you encounter are never identical placing you through stressful decisions and circumstances. Pressures and trials may be situations you attempt to evade, but these situations in this line of work are inevitable. I desire a career where you’re put to the test and when that occurs, I am prepared to increase my skills and experience to become an overall human being. I crave a challenge and know will do whatever it takes to overcome it. This career won’t be easy, but in the end, our profession is to do what’s best for the child. Occasionally, we would report parents if the child looks mistreated, neglected or parents are not capable to provide the proper medical care the child requirements to get back to health like administering medication. Regardless of our emotions, treating the families with respect is part of the job, the well-being of the child. When dealing with children and especially their parents, you acquire strong communication skills as parents can be very aggressive and hostile to you. Patience is a virtue will be periods where you’re passionate and troubled, but the morals I’ve have been raised with alongside my personality, has defiantly aided in avoiding potential threatening situations. With over 9 years of dealing with upset and unhappy customers, I feel I am very experienced in talking with a wide range of individuals and personalities. By giving them knowledge that they didn’t know before and seeing them progress, is truly a rewarding experience. The second reason for choosing the profession is the enjoyment I get in working with the parents to help them recognise the strengths their children have. I also enjoy seeing how happy and satisfied the parents are when they know that they are leaving their kids in good hands and that their kids will be properly tended to.
I have always been interested in working with children. Becoming a teacher has always been a potential career path for me; however, I recently discovered the position of a child life specialist which has further broadened my interest for a future career. Although they are not educators in school, they are extremely important since they are the educators for children and their families to help overcome difficult and/or challenging life events. As a child life specialist I will be teaching children and families in hospitals how to cope with their diagnoses, how a surgery day will go, how certain lifestyles will have to change, and much more.

Child abuse is one of the highest growing social problems in the United States. A social problem is, “a condition that a significant number of people believe to be a problem. A condition in which there is a sizable difference between the ideals of a society and its actual achievements” (Coleman et al. 2006:2). However, society has changed the way it views the issue, and is working towards finding a solution to this awful problem. Child abuse encompasses four main areas: physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. Child abuse is considered a sociological phenomenon because it is a learned behavior. Learning the social patterns as to why people abuse will give a better understanding to its reasons, and also the development of society in the way that it views children. 3.6 million children were victims of abuse in the year 2006. Sixty four percent were victims of neglect, sixteen percent suffered from physical abuse, and eight percent were sexually abused. Also in 2006, 1,530 children died as a result of abuse; an average of four children everyday (Child Welfare Information Gateway 2008).
