Introduction Slide: Women in the developing countries typically do not have as many rights as women in developed countries. This is a huge issue our world is facing. The improvement of inequalities that women face could have a big impact on how their country thrives.
Slide Two:
Women are often considered lower in status compared to men. Many women are treated poorly and men consider them as their property. Girls are frequently married at a young age in developing countries. For example, in Nepal, 7% of the girls there are married by the age of 10 and 40% are married by the age 15 (Cohen, 2006). Women not getting an education can have multiple negative side effects. Having females that are not getting an education can reduce economic growth (Klasen, 2002). It weakens economic growth directly by lowering average human capital and indirectly through its impact on investment and population growth (Klasen, 2002). Women aren’t getting the education they need to take care of their children and learn about the new technologies such as those used in farming.
If a woman is given the opportunity to go to school, it increases her knowledge on medical assistance she may need herself and how to take care of her children. When a female is educated she is more likely to seek medical assistance whether it be her feeling ill, when she is giving birth, or when her child may be ill. She learns about the importance of immunization for her children and also about sanitation. This can lead to reduced maternal mortality and child mortality (UNGEI). Once a girl starts school and gets through a portion of it she is also more likely to stay in school to continue her education. Staying in school can reduce her fertility and push her to start having kids later in life. Having children when she is a little older will not only benefit her health, but it will benefit her child’s because she will know how to take care of them better. Many have their rights taken away. They aren’t given equal rights that men have when it comes to getting the proper nutrition, getting an education, and the right to be able to have medical assistance when needed. They considered less important. Since the area they grow up in is typically in poverty, they don’t have as good of health facilities near them. Not having health facilities takes their right away for getting the assistance they need whether it be to treat them from an illness or assist them when giving birth. Women also lose their right to marry who they want. They are put into a situation where the marriage is arranged. This also violated fairness because it is not fair that they should be forced to marry someone who they do not
