Essay On Why Cops Should Not Be Armed

In today’s society, it is vital for police officers to be armed with the necessary weapons needed to assure protection to the people of the world while rates of crime rise dramatically. The usage of firearms that are carried by cops are critical to stop possible future crimes and make the safety of many people in the world a top priority even easier. Cops can intimidate future criminals to not be criminals, because they would know that there is a chance they could get hurt commiting a crime. The assurance that cops have the needed material to keep not only me but many people in the world today as save as they can.

One of the many reasons I believe cops should carry guns is to prohibit any threats by others from being successfully carried out. If cops are armed with guns to stop criminals, there would be a much lower crime rate. The article How Often Are Guns Used to Stop Crimes?, says “The only thing that stops

a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” This quote states that there is a good chance we can stop a lot of crime from happening if our protectors are armed with the right guns to properly do their job without putting them self or others in danger. Given this information, it is clear that cops would do a better job at keeping the people safe if they were properly armed; the risk of failing at saving people would be high if cops didn’t have guns.
In the list of many reasons why cops should be armed is to save the lives that are threatened in today’s world.

Everyone wants their safety guaranteed by the state or city enforcements like cops. They are the ones who give up their time and safety to ensure the peoples’ safety. This is also taking into consideration that many citizens do not have the ability to fully protect themselves and are not educated on defending themselves with guns if need be. The article “Capitol Police Heroes Used Guns to Prevent Massacre on Ballfield”, has a quote stating “We were sitting ducks. We had nothing to fight back with but bats, if it came to that,” Mr. Williams told reporters. He said there could have been as many as 25 deaths had the armed officers not been present.” Due to cops and their ability to saved around 25 lives that day because 3 cops were ready and armed when shots were fired. It is clear that if we didn't have cops that are armed and ready for when criminals strike, the peace in the world could be forever lost and hundreds of innocent lives would be

taken.
Crime prevention deals a lot with cops and other enforcement officers being armed and ready for whatever situation they may be called for. The intimidation of criminals by cops carrying a gun, letting them know they have what is needed to stop them, keeps the criminals from acting against other people and breaking the laws. From the article How Often Are Guns Used to Stop Crimes?, states “Studies indicate that firearms are used over 2 million times a year for personal protection, and that the presence of a firearm, without a shot being fired, prevents crime in many instances.” With many people and cops having the ability to be armed with guns, the prevention of criminal activity is increased day by day.
In many people’s eyes, police officers are good guys, and with the deserved reputation, they can be depended on to keep the people safe. Many others, though, see the wrongs in police officers and fear the probability of manipulation of the power they hold when they have these weapons. Everybody in this world needs protection, and not everyone is perfect, and there will always be a flaw in the system. To relieve people from this problem that could happen in the enforcement agencies is what they do before they let people become cops or higher up enforcement officers. All enforcement officers have to go through tough training and many background checks, which ensure the greater chance of having the right enforcement officers at work. The article American policing is broken. Here’s how to fix it., states “Justice Department found that police officers typically receive about 111 hours on firearms skill and self-defense — but just 11 on cultural diversity and human relations, eight on community policing strategies, and eight on mediation and conflict management.” This explains what all enforcement officers have to do and have to get into enforcement agencies.
In conclusion, we need cops that are armed and ready to protect us people when the time comes and criminals decide to strike. Without armed cops, defenseless people all around the world will be injured and the safety of the public will no longer be assured. Cops are heros and while they may have flaws, like the rest of the world, it is not reasonable to risk the lives of the people because of that fear. Working with the program and not around it is what will make society better as a whole.
