Recommended: Why is it important to have freedom
“The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.” A pamphlet by Thomas Paine gave soldiers inspiration to fight for their freedom against a global superpower. The soldiers at Valley Forge, a camp full of American Patriots, were barefoot, nearly naked, lacked food, hygiene, and warmth, their lungs full of smoke. A soldier in the Continental Army should stay at Valley Forge in spite of all the hardships because they would have fought for freedom, had a skilled leader, and …show more content…
failure would have meant being indentured to Britain again. To begin with, one example a soldier should stay at Valley Forge is because they would fight for freedom and liberty.
“Yet they show a spirit of Alacrity [cheerful willingness].” (Dr. Albigence Waldo, 1777) This shows that even though they were in battle, they still had hope for a free country from Britain. This is significant because the thought of what they would accomplish after they won was enough to drive them to work harder. The motivational mentality was essential to fight with. The hope alone would be enough to persuade me to stay at Valley Forge. The fact that the chance of gaining freedom went up if a soldier stayed was enough to keep your blood pumping. And if you stay, then some of your comrades will stay. Now you could say that the document also states that patriots were “Sick - discontented - and out of humor. Poor food - Cold weather - fatigue … nearly naked from the tattered remains of an only pair of stockings…” (Waldo, 1777.) That is a good reason to quit. But, the sense of freedom and liberty from an overly oppressive force along with the ability to give your family and future generations a new life, free from torment, outweighs all the …show more content…
hardships. Second, a soldier would have stayed at Valley Forge because of the leader of the Army, George Washington. He was a great, well-educated, leader. An engraving by William Henry Powell portrays “Committee of Congress at Valley Forge”. The Committee of Congress were supplying the army due to George Washington’s persuasion (Powell, 1866, 1866). Washington also wrote a 35-page report called the Representation that describing the relationship between the soldiers and the Committee and how they were going to work together. He persuaded the Committee that the soldiers needed the supplies. This shows that just brute force doesn’t guarantee a win. Intelligence played a huge role in the war also. Quality over quantity. This is significant because George Washington knew his land and used that to his advantage. He knew that the British were trained for open plains battles and marching towards the enemy in a straight line. Washington used their training against them and told his men to hide in the brush and shoot from a distance so that the British couldn’t see them. Washington used his intellect to win the war. Lastly, a soldier would not have left Valley Forge because they would not have wanted to increase the chances of being taxed relentlessly again.
“Britain, with an army to enforce her tyranny, has declared that she has a right (not only to TAX but ‘to BIND us in ALL CASES WHATSOEVER)” (Paine, Thomas, 1776) This is a quote from The American Crisis. This states that not only is Britain a tyrant, but they taxed the colonists and even battled against them. The main reason the colonists left Britain to the colonies was to gain freedom. Now Britain had denied them the freedom they once had and attacked them for not paying their taxes that Britain had excused them from paying when they first settled. This is significant because since the patriots were angry, it gave them another reason to fight against the British. The anger flared up their emotions so they fought with more gusto. Also, when other countries read the Declaration of Independence, these other countries swayed towards the colonist’s side. The fact that Britain was a tyrant helped convince them to fight with the patriots. Also, other countries had experienced Britain’s tyranny before, so they identified with the patriots and wanted to lend their
help. To sum up my thoughts, a soldier should definitely stay at Valley Forge to fight for their family and freedom, to follow under the great General Washington, and to oppose the superpower that had been harassing and taxing the colonists ever since they won the Seven Years War. A soldier should stay at Valley Forge, fighting in the cold, without a proper pair of stockings or boots, or a pair of warm and comfortable clothes for all these worthy and respectful reasons. Would you want to fight for your freedom, defy the tyrannical ruler of Britain? Because I know I would.
In the winter of 1777 and 1778 George Washington and the Continental Army had a rough time at Valley Forge. Valley Forge was 18 miles outside of Philadelphia . Some of the soldiers left because all they did was work it was cold and they had bad clothing like worn out shoes and they were getting sick but not all left some stayed loyal and times got even harder but they were so devoted to stay and fight for their freedom. So I would not have quit because…..
From 1754-1763, Britain fought the French and Indian war. Although Britain had won the war, they still had a lot of war debts to pay off. Britain turned to the colonies to pay off their debts by taxing them. The taxes angered the colonists because they believed it violated their rights. Benjamin Franklin had initially proposed the Albany plan of Union to unite the colonies, however this law was rejected by all of the colonial governments. It wasn't until after all of the British laws and taxes that the colonies would unite and write the Declaration of Independence.
During the Revolutionary War, at Valley Forge, which is Washington’s winter camp, 18 miles outside Pennsylvania, soldiers went through a very rough time during the tough and hard winter months of 1777 and 1778. Many soldiers didn’t have shoes, jackets, blankets, and proper warm clothing. Also, there was barely enough food for everyone. For example, in Document C, Dr. Albigence Waldo, (a doctor/surgeon at Valley Forge) , states, “No meat! No meat!” Without meat, the Patriots wouldn’t the proper protein they need, especially since they are fighting in a war! The question is, Would I have quit and left Valley Forge? After some lengthy thinking, my answer is, ‘no,’ I would not have quit and left. This is because, the Patriots had a great and caring
At Valley Forge, December 1777- June 1778. Washington and his Continental army would be staying here for 6 months and it was a very difficult place to live because it was very cold, a lot people are sick, and low on supplies but some are leaving and others are staying. Would you have quit Valley Forge? I would have stayed at Valley Forge because only 15% of people are dying, there is help on the way, and because of the inspirational words of Thomas Paine.
When the colonies were being formed, many colonists came from England to escape the restrictions placed upon them by the crown. Britain had laws for regulating trade and collecting taxes, but they were generally not enforced. The colonists had gotten used to being able to govern themselves. However, Britain sooned changed it’s colonial policy because of the piling debt due to four wars the British got into with the French and the Spanish. The most notable of these, the French and Indian War (or the Seven Years’ War), had immediate effects on the relationship between the colonies and Great Britain, leading to the concept of no taxation without representation becoming the motivating force for the American revolutionary movement and a great symbol for democracy amongst the colonies, as Britain tried to tighten their hold on the colonies through various acts and measures.
In the years 1777 to 1778, while General George Washington was settled in Valley Forge with his forces, the Continental Army was falling apart. It became difficult for Washington to keep leading when his soldiers kept retreating. My position is a soldier in the army who will be allowed to leave in one month, but I will not leave. The soldiers at Valley Forge in 1777 and 1778 should have stayed. The Continental Army needed everyone they could keep, the death toll was low, and George Washington was a fantastic leader.
I walk into Valley Forge. Winter 1777-78. As I walk in, an overwhelming feeling of emotions comes over me. Sadness, anger, hope, unwillingness, and happiness. I walk in a little bit further and I am greeted with many huts. These huts have no windows and only one door. I decide to peek into one of them and see 12 men inside. The huts are hard to see in because smoke has filled them. From another direction there is many men talking. I walk towards the noise and am surprised to see men sitting around a campfire eating small amounts of food. The men are talking about various things. Some are talking about their family, how they are excited that their duty is almost over, and some of the strong willed patriots who are willing to fight for their country are talking about how they are going to stay longer than they were sent to. As I keep wandering around the camp I find myself at an area with many men. These men are different than the men at the campfire. These men were the unlucky soldiers who had gotten sick. There is a soldier who is crying over another soldiers still body. Again I hear talking but this time it’s about how they need help caring for the sick and the soldiers that want to leave shouldn’t leave so they can help the sick. I shake off what I just witnessed and made the tough decision of staying. I would stay because they would need my help,
July 4th of 1776 is arguably the most significant day in American history. On this day, the thirteen British colonies won their independence from Great Britain, their mother country at the time. The war that allowed the colonies to gain their independence was, of course, the American Revolution. One reason the colonists’ declaration of independence was understandable was because after an extended period of salutary neglect, the British started imposing laws on the colonies. Another reason was that the British violated colonists’ rights by implementing the Proclamation of 1763. A third and final reason the colonies were correct in breaking away from Great Britain was that although the colonists were not represented in British Parliament, Great Britain still taxed them. The thirteen British colonies were absolutely justified in seceding from Great Britain because the British started to enforce laws after a long period of salutary neglect, they violated the colonists’ rights by passing the Proclamation of 1763, and the colonies were required to pay taxes even though they were not represented in Parliament.
An oppressed people will eventually rise against the oppressor regardless of loyalties they may have had in the past to their oppressor. Humans can only withstand so much oppression before eventually reaching a breaking point-a fact the British Empire failed to realize when they took oppressive actions on their colonies that would cause conflict and culminate into the American Revolution. After claiming victory in the French-Indian War, the British decided to implement policies and taxes in the colonies the colonists that the colonists considered illegal due to lack of their consent. While initially, the colonists did attempt more peaceful and logical alternatives to resolve their discontent with the British Empire, eventually more oppressive taxes and violent events culminated to a full Revolution. Before the revolution, the British had incurred debt from the French-Indian War and needed to raise money: they turned to the colonies as a source of income.
In the 1770’s the American colonists were being taxed too much by the British and they started to want their independence. Britain was taxing the colonists to pay their debts from the French and Indian War. The colonists started to fight back by tarring and feathering some tax collectors. Britain sent troops to the colonies which caused more problems.
The American revolution was a reaction to unfavorable tax policies from the King of England. When the King of England began to infringe on the colonists’ liberties, leaders inspired by the enlightenment grouped together to defend the rights of the American colonies. As Thomas Jefferson writes in the Declaration of Independence, “History of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries ad usurpations,
The origin of England's dependence on the colonies began during the French and Indian war, in the 1750s-1760s. In this war, the British were quite inexperienced; their European style of fighting did not work against the guerilla-warfare fighting style of the French. The British wore bright red coats, marched in long lines, often lugging cannons around with them, while the French hid behind trees and picked them off one by one. General Braddock relied on his force of ill-disciplined American militiamen, who used behind-the-tree methods of fighting in order to fight the Indians. After many years of fighting, the British finally came out victorious. Although England emerged from this war as one of the biggest empires in the world, it also possessed the biggest debt. They had poured much money and resources into these colonies in order to keep them as their own, and it was time for the colonies to give something back to the British for protecting them from the Indians. They finally realized what a precious gift the colonies were, and how useful they would be. In this war, the British realized that the colonies were their pawns in a global game of chess. At any time, the British felt that they had the right to impose taxes on the colonies, in order to make up for money that was lost in the French and Indian War to defend them. They had the view that because they had done so much to help the colonies, that the colonies had to repay them.
...colonist was taxed and oppressed by the British government. To list each reason that the colonists had to start a war with Britain would be impossible, but the main, igniting reason was that the British taxed and oppressed the colonists. Without the taxation of the colonists, the American Revolution would never have begun, and perhaps the world today would look very differently.
In the third section of the Declaration Of Independence states all the wrongs the people thought the king of England did to them. The colonists thought the king was treating them unfairly. For example he refused to approve laws that would help the colonists. He also made them pay taxes without their consent along with forbidding trade with other countries. They tried to talk to the king about their complaints but he ignored them. All of this made the colonists very angry. In this section the colonists write that they have had it with Britain’s Tyranny Rule.
