Worship Visit For my worship visit I went to a Jewish synagogue in my hometown. Going to the Jewish synagogue I was a little nervous and curious at the same time. I looked up when they were having services and then went on a Saturday morning with my friend only because I felt a little uncomfortable. I went early so I could introduce myself and tell them who I am and what I am there for. When I got to the synagogue I walked in and saw some people and noticed them putting on these hats called “kippas” and it’s a sign of respect. I also notice people putting on these scarf type clothing called a “tallit”. They would say a prayer before they put it on and then after put the tallit on. After putting my kippa on and tallit I walked in the sanctuary. First time being in a sanctuary, it reminded me a church. The sanctuary had pew style seats and almost had the same setup. …show more content…
While I sitting I noticed the Torah is in the middle of the synagogue where all the seats are all around facing the Torah. They have a stage upfront called a “Bema” where most of the service is done. The middle with the Torah is called the “Ark” When I was in the pew I also noticed books in the seats just like church, which ended up being prayer books and the weekly reading. After the rabbai came out and was actually a woman. I was very surprised but I also remembered that rabbis could be women as well. She came to the sanctuary and stood at this podium and introduced herself and gave a blessing to everyone. The rabbi started talking about previous service and how it was a great outcome. She told us to go to one of the book from the pew a turn to a page. Everyone stood up to and they started talking about these candles that they lit and then started to
...t also with acceptance as one of their own, although I never wore a Tallit or Kippah. This was a very peculiar position since I have never been so accustomed to this sort of kindness. By the end of the Jewish service, not only did I respect and appreciate their faith much more, but, in a way, I began to grow a love for it as well. While I felt no negative feelings towards the service, the most positive aspect would, most definitely, be the warmth I felt from everyone inside the Synagogue and from the presentation of the building itself. At first glance, I was not able to fully appreciate the decorations in the room, but the longer I observed I began to realize each decoration represented something significant. Overall, if I learned anything important this day it is that one thing holds true: I can still appreciate ideas and concepts even if I do not agree with them.
The Essential Features in an Orthodox Synagogue Recall, select, organize and deploy knowledge of Jewish belief and sources of authority, practice and organisation. The main function of the Jewish synagogue is worship, with the emphasis on prayer and reading. For Jews the synagogue is not just a building the word synagogue also refers to the community or congregation. The main features of all synagogues, especially the symbols, are designed to help people to worship God. The layout of the building is rectangular, with seats arranged on three sides.
Overall, I enjoyed the experience of learning more about a new culture and participating in their cultural events. My original fear of being an intruder went away when people would be friendly and introduce themselves to me. I was surprised to enter the prayer room and see that people were sitting on the floor because I am used to people having a chair to sit on. I was also nervous about sitting on the floor for a long period of time because my body is not used to it and I am not as youthful as I once was. After about thirty minutes, I started to get really uncomfortable, but I continued to sit because I did not want to be offensive by standing. I was surprised to see volunteers cooking meals for the guest because that is not something that I am used to seeing at a
This experience was really out of my comfort zone. It was hard to be an outsider and not prepared for what was to come and not speaking one of the languages used to understand the entire service. This service learning project gave me the opportunity to try a new church and gain a deeper respect for a different religion. Everyone at the service was very educated on speaking the sacred texts and participating in the rituals practiced. I hope to have gained a better understanding for those who are new to religions and are nervous to come to a worship service. I will make more of an effort to be welcoming and accommodating to those who are new to our church.
In my paper I will talk about my visit to The Community Church at Murphy's Landing (CCML). I have chosen this particular Church because it is a family church type and my neighbor goes there and she encouraged me to go with her. I went there with my neighbor on April 6, 2014.This church is an appropriate for this assignment because the people there are welcoming me with an open heart and they are willing to help and provide me with information. When I visit the Church’s site I read these words “We know visiting a new church can be intimidating. But, we want to help you to be as comfortable as possible when and if you join us”. The people gather in the church weekly to glorify God in joyful worship. The expressions of worship on CCML take many forms a prayer, a hymn of reverent awe, a guitar ringing with a chorus of praise, or a warm handshake and a welcoming smile. Their weekly services begin at 9:30 each Sunday at church. Also, they have weekly podcast if anyone wants to listen online. They have many types of services for parents, kids and students. People at CCML were so friendly; they gather around me and start welcoming me, one by one. People there introducing themselves to me, one after another and provide me with their contact information and help. Then we start talking about the church services and Christianity in particular. The mission of CCML was knowing, growing and loving. They seek to live out our mission by worshipping together as a local community of believers, growing in spiritual maturity through discipleship, education, and small groups, caring for one another within the context of the larger church body and small groups, and Communicating the love of Christ to our world, both through local outreach and global mis...
Overall, my visit to the Center for Jewish Life in Marlboro, N.J. was an enlightening experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. Ultimately, I thought it was delightful to see that whether you are at a Church or Synagogue, the main purpose of the establishment is to bring people together to pray for health, happiness and love for another.
A church needs to maintain itself to accommodate the ever-growing needs of churchgoers and other parties. With the passage of time, the church is increasingly investing in methods that help church visitors to be comfortable. One of the main ways though which the church is trying to accomplish this is the seating.
My first visit was a simple observation visit. I met with Gary and Dina at the Kingdom Hall for the 1pm Bible Talk service and the Wa...
I arrived at the destination of where the ritual observation was to take place at 9:45 a.m. on February 23, 2014. The ritual takes place in Brockville, Ontario in a building called the New Hope Brockville Tabernacle. The tabernacle is a large building that has a tower, also known as a steeple, erected on the roof. On the steeple is the symbol of the cross. The front doors opened up to a large foyer where the majority of the people inside were gathered in various small groups. These groups were composed of members similar in age. Everyone who entered through the doors was greeted with lots of hugs and welcomes.
The second parishoner to show her gratitude was another older women. She was wearing a flowered dress with a big floppy hat. She asked that we sign the official guest book and requested that we fill out an information card. She had a smile and a heart each made of pure gold. She took great pride in her job. The church had named her "the greeter" over 21 years ago, and according to her version of the story she had not missed a Sunday yet. We took our cards and moved into the sanctuary.
The church external appearance was quite different than other churches that I have seen. It was basically a big white stucco block with a gold dome on top and four decorated spikes on each corner of the building that surrounded the dome. The people of course were all Greek and were very well dressed. Most of the men and boys all wore suits, and If not they had some kind of vest on. I don’t know if this was some kind of rule or tradition, but it mostly seemed as a respect to God. The women all wore the basic dresses, and all the skirts fell down below the knee. Everybody was proper and ordered. As I walked in the church I entered a lobby of some kind. What I saw hear was something like social hour. Everybody was in there. They were all speaking Greek, and I felt as if I was in a family reunion party. The children were all together; the adults talked together and the young adults all were together. The way they all socialize is when someone comes up to say hello, they give each other a kiss on the cheek and a hug. These people are all very close to each other. It seems as if the church is the center of their lives. I admire that trait as well. To enter the auditorium you must enter this little room, which has a piece of garment from St. Constantine and St. Helen. Also there were candles lit. As they walked through this little room they lit a candle and knelt down for a moment to pray, and then touched each garment and made a cross over their chest.
I attended the Yom HaShoah v’ Ha’Gvurah; The Day of Remembrance of Destruction and Heroism. This event was held at Congregation Beth Israel and was open for the whole community. When I entered through the doors, I was given the opportunity to take a rose and lay it at the front of the church, on the steps leading to the alter. I took the rose and later found out that the roses symbolized the many deaths from the Holocaust as well as the hope that is reborn from the stories of the survivors. The church itself looked more like an auditorium or theater. There was a stage up the front with a pulpit on the right side. The rest of the church was filled with seats that picked up when we stood. I noticed that the space was created at an angle. The
The people there were all extremely nice and would try to help me understand. They understood and accepted the fact that I wasn’t religious, but was showing interest in their faith. There were not as much people there as I had expected, but that might have been because it was a smaller church. It also wasn’t as racially diverse as I had expected. I thought that because it is the world’s biggest religion, that it
There is nothing quite like traveling, going someplace new and finding out more about the world and yourself. Anyone can become a traveler it just takes a little bit of faith and courage. Traveling across the world or even across the country is a learning experience. When you are a traveler you see how people live and how different cultures work. It is the best educational experience you could give yourself. You see how the world works in a way no one can teach you. Seeing different cultures and people help build the person you want to be. If you are a traveler the world influences you, because when traveling, you see the good and the bad, and you learn from the right and the wrong. I am very lucky that I am able to be a traveler and see this
He did not speak to me. I walked in. The lights were dim and there were blue glowing lights on the ground. Columns of carved rock covered the Mandir; they were carvings of deities. Around the room were small, opened rooms for each of the deities. There was about ten in the room. Each one was either a male or female. I noticed that a majority of them had four arms, and the trunk of an elephant as noses. Once again, there was detail everywhere. Some of the statues wore animal parts as clothes; while others (especially the males) wore a bright orange wrap. I looked up and noticed the beautiful carved ceiling. It reminded me of a church, but there they often have paintings. I did not attend a service. I may have understood this part wrong. However, I understood that they close the temple almost every hour for a reason that I am not sure of. I did see people praying. I noticed that the women pray sitting down. One man was standing in front of a statue and next thing I know his whole body is on the floors worshiping the deities. The women also had in their hands a round string with beads on it; in Islam we also use something similar to it and it is called
