Technology has changed drastically over the years; throughout the years, machinery has been developed and innovated. Technology develops from creative inventors. Consequently, the 19th and 20th century had an abundance of inventors such as Thomas Edison, who invented the lightbulb in the late 1870s, and Henry Ford who invented the assembly line during the early 1910s. Ultimately, the 19th and 20th century provided the significant source of inventions such as the typewriter and the computer. Society made typewriters its norm before computers were invented. A typewriter is defined as “A typewriter is a hand-operated mechanical device with which on typing keys can produce printed characters on paper” (What is a Typewriter? - Definition from Techopedia, 2017). The first typewriter was invented in 1868 by Christopher Latham Sholes. There are three different types of typewriters: mechanical, electric, and electronic typewriters. The mechanical typewriter does not need electricity to operate, and it operates directly on the machine. However, electric and electronic typewriters require electricity; hence, electric typewriter uses an …show more content…
A computer is defined as “A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information, or data. It has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data” (Computer Basics: What is a computer?, n.d.). Similar to a typewriter, it’s able to create documents; however, the difference between a typewriter and a computer is that a computer has more functions. A computer allows one to not only create documents, but “play games, and browse the Web. You can also use it to edit or create spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos” (Computer Basics: What is a computer?, n.d.). Most people only think of a desktop and a laptop as a computer; nevertheless, computers have different forms. Tablets, game consoles, smartphones, and more are all computers. The first ever computer happen in
During the late 1800’s, there was a time of great change. This was near the end of the industrial revolution in America. Some of the greatest inventions were invented during this time. We still use most of the inventions today, they are just modified to fit the needs of America today. 3 of the major inventions and innovations that came out of this time were the telephone, typewriter, and the incandescent light bulb.
One of the most well known technological innovator and manufacturer was Thomas Alva Edison. He invented many devices which are still being used today, with some modifications. He even built a vote-recording device before he was twenty-one. Some inventions were the phonograph, incandescent light bulb, and the kinetoscope, which was much like a motion picture camera. In total, he has patented 1,093 inventions. He earned the nickname “The Wizard of Menlo Park”.
Throughout history, there have been many inventions to help humans communicate, such as the telephone, typewriter, and many more. One great milestone was the printing press. The printing press was invented in 1,450 CE by Johannes Gutenberg. The printing press is a machine that could quickly mass produce books at a cheap cost. He created the invention in Germany. The printing press lead to a higher distribution in books at a lower price. As a result, the literacy rate was increased and more people were able to learn about science, religion, and geology.
Computers are a magnificent feat of technology. They have grown from simple calculators to machines with many functions and abilities. Computers have become so common that almost every home has at least one computer, and schools find them a good source for information and education for their students (Hafner, Katie, unknown). Computers have created new careers and eliminated others and have left a huge impact on our society. The invention of the computer has greatly affected the arts, the business world, and society and history in many different areas, but to understand how great these changes are, it is necessary to take a look at the origins of the computer.
The most common type of computer is the personal computer, which is otherwise known as P.C., or the desktop computer. Computers contain countless electronic parts. These parts all contribute to processing, sorting, and receiving data. Usually, computers are linked to thousands of other computers and handheld devices via the World Wide Web or also known as the internet. It is estimated that about half of the jobs today use computers. Computers have changed the way we communicate and learn forever. You can communicate to other people using phones, laptops, tablets and PCs. You can do all of this through the internet or also known as the World Wide Web. Before modern communication we didn't know about things happening on the other side of the world for weeks or even months. But today we know what is happening all over the world in an
A computer is an electronic device, operating under the control of instructions kept in its own memory. The computer can accept and process data according, then it produce and save the results for future use (Gary B. Shellly 2012). In short, computer is devices that use to process information. In the help of computer, data or raw fact (input) can be transform into useful information (output).
The history of engineering goes back into the 19th century when Alexander Volta (1745-1827) made a remarkable discover regarding the nature of electricity (Cosgrove 749). He discovered that electrical current could be controlled and could flow from one point to another. By the time the mid-19th century came about the rules for electricity were being established. During this time electromagnetic induction was discovered by Michael Faraday who lived from 1791 to 1867 (749). Also during this time Samuel Morris invented the telegraph in 1837 which relies on the principles of electromagnetic induction (749). Alexander Graham Bell, who lived from 1847 to 1922, created the telephone which also uses electricity in order to operate (749). Through the success of the telephone, Bell Telephone Company was established. In 1878, the light bulb was finally invented by Thomas Edison who lived from 1847 to 1931 (749). Off the principles of Faraday’s electric motor from 1821, Nicholas Tesla invented a more efficient and powerful electric motor in 1888 (749). To make these inventions be more significant, effort was expended to make better motors and transformers and to enhance the power needed to make them function. Through these inventions during the middle 19th century, it led to the capability of lighting homes and cities through the use of electricity, and it also led to the creation of the telephone communication system (750).
The typewriter is one of America's greatest inventions. The typewriter was a big successes during the era it was invented, it became a very helpful tool for anyone who had to write long papers and it helped lead lots of other people to evolve it. The typewriter helped sped up the written world. But few people paid much attention, because they were too busy reading what the typewriter had written. The story of the typewriter begins in 1868, when Christopher Latham Sholes came up with a simple writing machine.
I never thought about writing something down with a pen on plain lined paper involved technology. It always seemed to me that those things were around, pen and paper had just been there, for one reason or another for the purpose of writing down things, organizing ideas, or just jotting down notes. Much like Ong says, “The fact that we do not commonly feel the influence of writing on our thoughts shows that we have interiorized the technology of writing so deeply that without tremendous effort we cannot separate it from ourselves or even recognize its presence and influence. (Tribble and Trubek, 316-317) Creating a writing technology is something that takes a lot of thought. The process, materials, words written down, and the purpose of writing things down although common to modern society, was something that proved daunting to create.
Today, computers influence all lifestyles, and all different types of businesses. They have become an essential part of everyday life, from chatting, to e-mail, to commerce, to gaming. Almost every person in the United States has had some use on the computer. Since the technology age began, computers have become a mainstay in American and world society as much as the telephone, the automobile, and the television.
Another example of the change in our technology over the last century is the change in the computer. In 1946, the first electronic computer called the ENIAC took up the space of a large room. Instead of using transistors and IC chips, the ENIAC used vacuum tubes. Compared to many computers now, the ENIAC is about as powerful as a small calculator. That may not be much, but it is a milestone because there would not be computers today if it were not for the ENIAC. As the years passed, the computer became smaller and more powerful. Today, more than half of the American population has a computer in their home. The personal computers today are thousands of times more powerful than the most powerful computers fifty years ago.
Thomas Alva Edison is a very well-known American inventor. He invented about 1093 devices that influenced us greatly, such as light bulb, microphone, telephone receiver, universal stock ticker, phonograph, kinetoscope (used to view moving pictures), storage battery, electric pen, and mimeograph. Edison also improved many other existing devices as well. In the period from 1878 to 1880, Thomas Edison began serious research into developing a practical incandescent lamp. Edison and his associates worked on at least three thousand different theories to develop an efficient incandescent lamp. In 1878, Edison built his first high resistance incandescent electric light. Incandescent lamps make light by using electricity to heat a thin strip of material (called a filament) until it gets hot enough to glow. Many inventors had tried to perfect incandescent lamps to "sub-divide" electric light or make it smaller and weaker than it was in the existing arc lamps, which were too bright to be used for small spaces such as the rooms of a house.Edison's lamp would consist of a filament ho...
There is no special person has inventing the computer, but it came from the exertion of a group of inventors. It has developed a computer-making until we got to this level of development where it became easy acquisition of the computer and it became most important things in our lives. Computer consists of several main parts screen, mouse, keyboard, and system unit. T...
From classroom activities to space flight and everything in between, computers are a vital part of daily life. Everything we do and every aspect of our life is affected by modern technology, like the computers. Computers let us dissect any sort of data. Computers make us reflect, hence we develop. Because of computers and the Internet, we can talk with individuals from diverse nations, and even see them via webcams.
