In the novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston, the main character Janie focuses on self-discovery rather than true love. Throughout the story, Janie seeks love and connection, moving from one relationship to the next while trying to learn things about her identity that fulfill her quest. She went through multiple struggles through her marriages with Logan Killicks, Joe Starks, and Tea Cake, but overcame them and learned many things about herself that she didn’t know she had within her. The first thing that should be stated is that Janie did not want to marry because she felt she wasn’t ready and wanted the marriage to be centered on real love. Janie states, “Me, married”? Eventually, Janie married Logan Killicks, also known as the guy Nanny wanted Janie to marry, and they were married for about 3 months before she met a man named Joe Starks.
