There are people who truly make an effort to do right for people and on occasion the deeds of the people who try to do right go unappreciated. If you read about Nick’s father in “Indian Camp” by Ernest Hemingway, Brently Mallard in “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, and Mrs. Mitty from “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber.
The selfless deeds done by Brently Mallard and Nick’s father never get the appreciation they deserve due to the selfishness of the recipients of those deeds. For example, in “Story of an Hour,” Brently Mallard is described by his wife as a man with “kind, tender hands” and had a “face that had never looked save with love upon her,” but she was still overwhelmed with happiness over the news of his death. Mrs.

Mitty’s unconditional love for her husband is never recognized due to his incompetence. This is evident in her relationship with Walter Mitty in “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.” The story highlights a part of their everyday lives and it shows Mrs. Mitty constantly having to keep tabs on her husband. She notices odd changes in her behavior and she says “I wish you’d let Dr. Renshaw look you over.” Her husband only responds with negative thoughts towards her wife. Though he never states them out loud, we as the readers know Walter Mitty’s true feelings about his wife. From Walter’s point of view you may develop negative feelings towards Mrs. Mitty too because Walter doesn’t realize how much she is actually doing for him. No one else would put up with Walter’s actions but she seems to do it every day and he will never appreciate it due to his incompetence. All Walter does is act far younger than his real age which makes Mrs. Mitty correct him and he perceives it as someone who “seemed gross i love you unfamiliar like a strange woman who yelled at him in a crowd.” You can not blame Walter Mitty for his behavior though unlike the two other examples he is just purely incompetent to see the importance in his wife’s actions. The other two are just ungrateful for what they
It is up to the people whether they want to be models who endeavor for more or disgraces that fail to try. In “A Model of Christian Charity” by John Winthrop and “Art of Virtue” by Benjamin Franklin, both authors acknowledge human flaws, but more importantly they also acknowledge the capability to strive for good for themselves or for
In the story of Walter Mitty by James Thurber, Walter Mitty is a static character and in the movie Walter Mitty by Ben Stiller, Walter is made a dynamic character so that the movies is more exciting than the book. In the story Walter stays a boring character who doesn’t do much at all, while in the movie he becomes the adventurous character he has dreamed about. In the end of the story Walter was happy about “facing the firing squad”. Since Walter never had the life he wanted he just wanted to die, unlike the movie where he had done so many things that he got himself a date when he was the most happy. In the story Walter kept dreaming throughout the day being triggered by little things to go off into his own world, but in the movie Walter
...e persuasive and understandable. The most important lesson I learned in this article was to appreciate those people who provide services to us. They are work at poor conditions and are forced to work as a nonstop machine to fight for their daily living. According to work perspective, for majority of the time we do not stand out for others despite their innocence, “So why didn’t I intervene”? (275). we would just remain silent in order to keep our jobs. In this essay, Ehrenreich recounts how she felt guilty for not standing up for George when he was accused of stealing goods. This feeling of inability is common in low-income people, not well-educated workers limits their opportunities to find better jobs.
Norman Schwarzkopf Jr, a famous war soldier once said, "The truth of the matter is you always know the right thing to do. The hard part is doing it." Although society has the potential to help others in need they restrict themselves from doing the right thing. But when society is challenged with a problem only some step up against to the odds to make a difference. Throughout history, during times of devastation and separation there are people that show a ray of light that gives people hope during the darkest times.
In conclusion, the characters NightJohn and Sarny in the book NightJohn by Gary Paulsen demonstrate that it is important to put others’ needs before your own. Both NightJohn and Sarny put themselves in dangerous situations, but by doing this they were able to benefit others. By living our lives putting others’ needs before our own we can become selfless and more understanding people and affect the world around us for the
When you do not live up to your full potential some people will say that is a waste of talent. Even if someone were to go down the wrong road there is still a chance to redeem yourself. Flannery O 'Connor the author of “A good man is hard to find” is a great example of that situation. When a family of six a grandmother, her son Bailey, the mother of his three children John Wesley, June star and a baby boy. After the family decides to have a road trip to Florida, they encounter a man known as the misfit. The misfit has been through so much trouble that the grandmother sees the lost potential in the man. The grandmother shows her indifference for creation by selfishly manipulating and nagging to get her way on the family 's vacation (Keil).
...dhearted grandmother. Bartleby was able to be free in his workplace because the lawyer allowed him so. Therefore, both characters' relationships with others, who showed compassion and understanding, helped them to overcome obstacles and reach freedom. Brent’s grandmother was a positive aspect in her life through support, and it made Brent believe there was still humanity or hope. Bartleby got the lawyer to let him do as he pleased, although it was the result of the lawyer's selfishness. Nevertheless, the lawyer did care for Bartleby and tried to help him, even if he was unsuccessful in the end. Each character had different approaches to freedom, and got there on their own, with nothing given to them but support. The acts of kindness and knowledge of the fact that good-hearted people still existed were ultimately enough for Brent and Bartleby to reach their freedom.
There are numerous reasons as to why Walter Mitty suffers from maladaptive daydreaming. Firstly, Walter's daydreams are excessively detailed and which is a common symptom of those who suffer from maladaptive daydreaming. In Walter's daydreams imagery is used to create a vivid picture of the daydream in the reader's mind so that it seems as if Walter is actually experiencing the situation he is daydreaming about. For example, in Walter's third daydream he plays Captain Mitty, a character fighting in a war. In this daydream specific expressions such as "the war thundered and whined" "the pounding of the cannon; the rat-tat-tatting of machine guns" "the menacing pocketa-pocketa-pocketa of the new flame throwers" confirm that Walter Mitty's daydreams are much more detailed than those of regular daydreamers proving
Among the first indicators of Nick’s unreliability as a narrator is shown through his extreme misunderstanding of his father’s advice. When Nick’s father told him that “Whenever you feel like criticizing any one, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages you’ve had” (1) he most likely meant not all people have the same opportunities in life. However, Nick perverted his father’s meaning and understood it as “a sense of the fundamental decencies us parceled out unequally at birth” (2). Nick’s interpretation of his father’s advice provides insight into his conceited, somewhat supercilious attitude, as he believes that not all people are born with the same sense of manners and morality.
Nick begins the novel with wise advice his father once told him, “‘Whenever you feel like criticizing any one...just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had”’(1). Nick starts off by reminding himself and informing that throughout the story, save your judgements to yourself and try to put yourself in his or her position. His words are also a reminder that in society today, people tend to judge too quickly and we need to remember that everyone is not in the same position as we are. There will always be someone more or less fortunate than us, and we must be grateful for what we are given.
Mrs. Louise Mallard’s sister, Joseph Santo, and brother in law, Richards Santo, came over to Mrs. Louise Mallard’s house to deliver the news of the death of her husband. The news was according to a recent accident that occurred at a railroad station. Shortly after delivering the news of her husband’s death, Brently Mallard walked in the door. According to interviews,
In the movie and short story, The secret life of Walter Mitty, the main conflict is that he doesn’t have self confidence which is shown throughout both the movie and the short story. For example in the movie, he is not able to talk to the girl he is interested in, Sheryl. Mitty does not have the courage to talk to her because his self esteem is low due to the fact that he lets everyone walk over him. Furthermore, in the short story the main conflict is also that he has no self confidence but in the story it’s because of his wife, Mrs. Mitty. She doesn't think that he can do anything for himself because she also thinks so low of Mitty “Does it ever occur to you that I am sometimes thinking?”(304). Just like in the movie Mitty lets people walk
There are many characters in short stories, books, and eve shirt comic strips that benifet to other people for their achievements. For in the novel, "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Theif," Percy is a young, smart boy who happens to be a demigod. Well he fights many evil gods and monsters and happens to win. His biggest defeat was the Titan, Kronos. This Titan was one of the most evil ones and he fought Percy to the death. Well after Percy had beaten him, he regained peace in all of the world. For all the gods thanked him for his great achievment and his he made the world a better place for mortals and immortals. Another peace of literature where someone's achievements benifet to other people is in the book,"The Merchant of Venice," for it is about a man named Antonio who is have trouble with his life. He soon works his way around the bad things when he starts to make money and his best friend marries the fairest princess. These achievements that him and his friend made contribute to each other. For they both help each other because they are both in
Heroes are often times very inspirational and a lot of people look up to them. A lot of people do good because a hero inspires them. For example, Tristan Segers was a soldier in a war that was in Afghanistan. During the war he lost his leg. He wasn’t going to give up on his dream as a cook so once he was recovered, he went to school to become a chef. Later he got submitted to go back into another war. In the story, Segers says, “I didn’t do anything special, but if the progress I have made motivated another wounded veteran to keep going, then that’s great” (Fiege 68). This is a good example because even though he didn’t think he did anything he is really setting an example for all the other soldiers who lost something and for everyday people to be inspired and never give up like he
The best portion of a good man’s life is his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love. William Wordsworth
