The Maze Runner

The Maze Runner by James Dashner is a science fiction novel that includes action and thriller. The novel is about a sixteen year old boy named Thomas who wakes up with no memory from where he came from or who he is or what he was doing there and in a metal cage box surrounded by many teenage boys looking at him weirdly. Throughout the novel there is many science-fiction themes and characteristics displayed such as futuristic technology, alien, robot like creatures environmental and social changes also unrealistic and fictional events.

The Maze Runner shows great representation of futuristic technology. All of the teenage boys who have now adapted to their lives outside of the maze which they call the glade the young boy

also call themselves "Gladers", the gladers are now trying to understand and wrap their head around the wall shifting maze since it is nearly impossible for the walls of the maze to shift let alone move. "How could the walls move they're huge and they look like they've been standing here for 1000 years" (Thomas ch 4 pg 25). Thomas or any of the other gladers couldn't possibly try to come up with an explanation. It was an unknown or trace a futuristic technology, the big concrete stonewall seem to shift every day, when the walls would shift the gladers would hear huge chains and smell burning oil, no one knew what happened when the walls would shift. Characteristics are also shown by the robot, alien like creatures suiting the genre, for example the Grievers and the Beetle Blades.
The Grievers are robot, alien like creatures with many legs that look like spikes and rods they will hunt for gladers to kill and sting. The grievers will roam the maze at night protecting its corridors. Once stung by a griever there's only a matter of time to get the serum which will save their life. The Beetle Blades are a worm robot-like creature that roams the glade and maze keeping an eye out for the gladers for the creators, the magically shifting maze and alien robot creatures are just a few points showing its relevance to the genre science-fiction.

Unrealistic mind turning phases happen in The Maze Runner such as 'the changing'.

The changing happens after being stung by a griever when injected with the serum that will save them and help them return to their normal self, "The changing brings back memories just little snippets, but definite memories of before we came to this horrible place, anyone who go through it acts like a bloody psycho when it's over" (Thomas ch 23 pg 149). The changing puts the victims in a state of shock and illness until they are healed and fully recovered. In addition to strange unexplained events all of the young teenage boys are living outside of the maze (the glade) in a controlled community by the creators of the maze. The people who created the maze kidnapped these kids and wiped their memories and put them in the maze to fend for themselves and learn to find a way out and escape in all of a plan for their experiment. The teens go through major social and environmental little changes, not being able to remember their prior lives and adapting to the new environmental changes takes a toll on the gladers as they have to develop new skills to live in their new environment. Social and environmental changes are also elements of the science-fiction genre also including unrealistic mind turning events and

phases.
The maze Runner by James Dashner show that it's relevant to the genre science fiction as the maze runner prove the characteristics in theme such as alien robot like creatures, social and environmental changes, futuristic technology and unrealistic and mind turning events in phases, the overall story line shows the book appropriately suits and fits the novel.
