“The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes. But he notices them. like I do.” In the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon, a boy named Christopher Boone tries to solve the mystery of the murder his neighbor's dog Wellington, but finds himself revealing other major secrets. As the story progress, the readers will find themselves wondering why Christopher isn't like any other kid they know or read about. When the reasons to why Christopher tends to act the way he does become clear the reader's viewpoint of Christopher will shift. And he states that he had the dream, countless times but different versions of it. “And in the dream almost everyone on earth is dead because they have caught a virus. And eventually there is no one left in the world except people who didn't look at other people's faces… ‘and these people are all special people like me...And then the dream is finished and I'm happy” (Haddon 198-201). Christopher state's reasons to why he would make a good astronaut, like how he’s intelligent and knows how to work machines and how he wouldn’t be homesick because he’ll be surrounded by a lot of things that he likes. “And I would be able to look out the window in the spacecraft and know that there was no one for a thousand miles…” (Haddon 51). Christopher suffers from isolation because he dreamt of a world where everyone was like him and the people who weren't, were killed off. I think because of his mental state it makes him want to be alone more, which makes it difficult for him when he’s in an open space with lots of people and he can't concentrate or do anything and his brain starts hurting. Which makes him scared of little things and it’s hard for him to interact with others, even his parents. It can also limit his chances of being a scientist. Additionally, Christopher has a hard time understanding other people. Christopher saw that Toby had escaped and was in the lower bit where the rails were, so he climbed down to get Toby out. And then he heard a loud noise which meant the train was coming but he didn’t move. “And the man with the diamond patterns on his socks grabbed a hold of me and pulled me and I screamed, but he kept pulling me…”( Haddon 183). A lady asked if Christopher was ok and she touched his arm, which cause him to scream. The lady backed up, then she kneeled down to where Christopher was and asked if she could do anything for him. “‘Stand farther away,’ because I didn’t like her being so close. And I said, ‘I’ve got a swiss army knife and it has a saw blade and it could cut someone's finger off’” (Haddon 184). Christopher suffers because he can't easily read human emotion like other kids his age can, which causes him to react differently in situations. For example, he can’t tell if someone is trying to help him or when they are trying to harm him so he’s constantly frightened of others. Even if he’s in a dangerous situation he won't let anyone near him. Christopher suffers because he's really sensitive, especially to noise. Christopher was in the middle of a big room in the train station. The room was filled up with signs and really loud noises. “because there were too many and my brain wasn’t working properly and this frightened me so I closed my eyes again…” (Haddon 170). Christopher was trying to get to the train station, but he ended up in a place with lots of shops and lots of people walking. “And I didn't like all the people being near me and all the noise because it was way too much information in my head and I made it hard to think like there was shouting in my head” (Haddon 139). Christopher is really sensitive to loud noise and it makes him lose focus to the point where his brain isn’t working properly. For most people roaring noises can cause a headache and it's even worse for Christopher with his disability. He also can't focus on something when another thing has caught his attention or he’s looking at more than one thing at a time. And after hearing a loud noise he has to do maths to make him feel relaxed again, but in the future if he’s going to be a scientist he would also have the choice to do that. So not only his sensitivity to noise is hurting him physically, it will make it difficult for him in his future goals. Christopher seems to suffer from his mental and emotional state because he’s isolated, doesn’t understand others and is sensitive to the outside world.
However, some will argue that Christopher benefits from his mental state because he likes being alone and has a photographic memory. After finding out that Christopher is suffering from Asperger most will think the book “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime” is about a boy who struggles with Asperger, but the main topic of the book is the difficulties of being a stranger or being different from others. The book gave a little bit of insight of how life can be different for someone with a disability, then for someone who doesn't. which is important to keep in mind that not everybody's the same and some have a special need while others don't.
