“While I cannot take the time to name all the men in the State Department who have been named as members of the Communist Party and members of a spy ring, I have here in my hand a list of 205.” This quote from Joseph McCarthy accurately depicts how authority in a vulnerable society will try everything they can to get rid of the problem externally without reflecting on the effect of this to the wellbeing of the society. The Crucible was written in the early 1950s during a period of ‘McCarthyism’. During this period, the American society was very brittle due to The Red Scare which caused the Republican U.S. Senator in the Truman administration, Joseph McCarthy, to blacklist and isolate many people who he thought could be Communist. Even though she blows the event way out of proportion, this shows the audience that when one wants to be in power, they must use something for their own good: Abigail shifts the ideal of the poppet from innocence to the downfall of her which allows it to stick throughout the rest of the play. She then uses it to not only shift it to symbols of bad but to illustrate herself in a positive light compared to a bad action: “I have been nearly murdered every day because I did my duty pointing out the Devil’s people.” This shows how easy it is for one in power to exploit symbols of goodness for their own gain. People will forever remember an innocent doll as a symbol of destruction to someone who was just trying to do the ‘right’ thing – Abigail further confirms the corruption in society by showing that she is a rule follower. Miller further uses the poppet to show the difference between expectation versus reality.
