AS10 Summer Reading Reflection Questions The Alchemist is a great and interesting story that will teach a lot of kids that will read it. The book is a story about following your dreams and this is a great lesson that parents and society tries to get kids to learn. Santiago is a boy in the story who has troubles on his journey and struggles throughout the book and realizes it takes time to achieve his personal legend. I believe The Alchemist should be in the school’s curriculum because the kids will enjoy the book, and the book is not too long so the kids would not get bored of it too easily and will stay focused and engaged. The book also teaches the reader you have to take steps in trying to realize you personal legend. The boy in The Alchemist had a goal to achieve in his life which was finding the treasure in the Pyramids. For George and Lennie their goal was to buy a farm and own a lot of animals. In both of the stories the characters have struggles and have to get past them so they can try to achieve their goal. Like how the boy had to get a job at the crystal shop and making money since he got his money stolen in town. George and Lennie had to escape the town which falsely accused Lennie of trying to rape a women. Those are some similarities of the two stories, here are some differences. The time is similar because it is in the past but in The Alchemist it is before technology and cars, Of Mice and Men is in the 1930’s. The settings are very different; in The Alchemist it is in the Middle East by Egypt. In Of Mice and Men it is south of Soledad, California, in the United States of America.
