Recommended: Negative effects of sports gambling

The Author of the opinion article "Politicians, bureaucrats could ruin sports betting bonanza" (Root, W 2018) lays out why he believes that instead of a cash bonanza that the government is killing the golden goose. The article lays out why he thinks that instead of putting the mafia out of business, with the amount of over taxation illegal sports bookies and off shore books are going to be making money beyond their wildest imagination. The law at issue is the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, enacted in 1992. What it did was prohibited states from either operating sports gambling or casinos to run sports gambling. Root lays out his argument how the government is messing this up by pointing out that this could bring in billions of tax revenue but by over regulating sports gambling they are in fact turning millions of potential new sports gamblers to off shore sports books and mafia run bookies. The NCAA is willing to let Vegas host championships. NCAA's chief legal officer Donald Remy said in a statement that while the organization is still reviewing how court's decision affects college sports, it will "will adjust sports wagering and championship policies to align with the direction from the court.”

Major League Baseball released a statement saying the decision will have "profound effects" on the sport. "Our most important priority is protecting the integrity of our games," MLB's statement continued. "We will continue to support legislation that creates air-tight coordination and partnerships between the state, the casino operators and the governing bodies in sports toward that goal." The University of Alabama, alone, reported $143.4 million in athletic revenue during 2012-13. That is more money than any of the NHL franchises and 25 of the 30 NBA franchises. (Branch, Taylor) Alabama football players dedicate their lives to football and in turn the NCAA. They are the most valuable pieces to the billions of dollars the NCAA rakes in every year. In most businesses, the most important employees get paid the most. In the case of the NCAA, their most important employees are not even on the pay role.

On the same note, if you eliminate spreads, can they be sure that it will make a difference when it comes to gambling. Don’t get me wrong, eliminating the spreads would decrease the amounts of point shaving incidents, but it won’t necessarily stop them. Bookies can make up their own spreads and ask players to shave points regardless of the fact that the spread is not publicized. The bookie has an idea by about how much one team may beat another. I understand that they will probably never “eliminate collegiate gambling” but they’re trying to limit and reduce it and I’m all for it too.

    There are many different issues dealing with the legalization of online gambling.  The current law dealing with online gambling is the Wire Transfer Act of 1961.  Under this statute, the law is violated when telephone lines are used in interstate or foreign commerce to place wagers.  The statute also bars the transmission of information that assists betters to gamble on sports events and contests.  Recently, Congress have been active in seeking to pass further legislation to restrict betting on the web.  Last November, the Senate proposed the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act.  This statute would make it a crime to knowingly use the internet or other interactive computer services to place, receive, or otherwise make a bet or wager; or send, receive, or invite information assisting in the placing of a bet or wager.  Penalties would be as high as $20,000 and 4 years in prison.  However, in a vote in July, the bill narrowly missed obtaining the two thirds majority required to pass the bill.  In May, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Funding Prohibition Act was introduced.  This statute would criminalize and prohibit any person engaged in a gambling business from knowingly accepting from another person who is involved in internet gambling a credit card or extension of credits, an electronic transfer of funds, or any instrument payable through a financial institution.  This would shield certain financial institutions from liability as long as they do not know that their facilities are being used for online gambling.  This bill has also not yet been passed.
