Essay On Sporting Competitions

706 Words2 Pages

Sporting competitions between different countries serve purposes on the basis of title, tradition and the exchange of sporting spirit. Australia participates in over 1000 competitive and non-competitive sporting events worldwide. Australia has been both repented as a nation and as a joint force with other countries. Regardless of reason, the age-old sporting culture has been constantly improved and strengthened with every year, an example being the Olympic Games first held in Athens stretching back to 1896, more than a century ago.

So what is the most obvious purpose for all the sporting competitions? It’s no secret that one of the major aims to international sporting competitions is to see who takes the trophy home at the end of the day. As with any formalised competition, the aim of all competitors is to test an individual team’s ability against another. The result is a detailed rankings list of who’s better than whom. The Olympic Games is perhaps the easiest example to ridicule for this.

The fight for a title is nothing to be looked down upon, it drives athletes and inspires determination and perseverance. The Olympic Games, with a reputation for being the largest international sporting event, does precisely that except on a global scale. Teams are defined by nation, individuals are separated based on sporting prowess, therefore, the overall ranking for a country lies in the handful of athletes the country deems “the best”. These select men and women compete in their respective sports in the hope of an “official placement” or in layman’s terms, “Bronze, Silver or Gold”.

These rankings are important for a country as it heavily impacts their reputation, sporting accountability and internal culture.

2. Improvement
Improvement is also of noticeable significance to countries as they attempt to “be the best” at what they are training for. Using the example from before, Dean Caser, was scouted by CHS sport in England to participate as part of their official team even though he himself is not of the country of origin. The basic reason is simply just that country’s interact well with each other, enough to be exchanging sporting information and athletes in an attempt to improve themselves.

To summarise, the two primary purposes for sporting competitions could be thought of as for title and the exchange of sporting spirit. This in turn affects a country differently where internal and external factors such as reputation, sporting accountability and improvement are exercised in the global community.
