What Do Sociologists Do? Education: This section of sociology focuses on the impact society has on the educational facilities and also how schooling affects individuals. Some of the well-known people for this branch include Durkheim, Sumner, and A.W.Green. Durkheim believes that the younger generation is conceived by education, in that it teaches a child to act, see, and feel in a way it would not have developed on its own. Durkheim also believed that educational institutions taught specifically to emerging needs that had not been accepted in the political society as a whole. He also believed that the key individual was the teacher. The teacher was to be the one to emerge social needs throughout the society. They would have to adapt their …show more content…
This has been seen throughout history and is still today in many countries. Today, countries in the Middle East and Asia both follow these social standards. This is especially with marriage. Some countries still go by arranged marriages. This is when the parents of the bride and groom settle on an agreement for their children. The bride then goes from the father as being the main male dominant figure to the groom as the new male dominant figure. The woman must then obey by the husband’s social code, which entails being almost completely covered when out in …show more content…
Although this occurs all over the world, the most common racial difference is between African Americans and Caucasians. One of the most popular news topics right now regarding race is the “Black Lives Matter” story. This is most specifically directed towards police brutality. Some people believe that the police will take more drastic measures because the criminal is a different color. This almost always involves a white cop and a black victim/criminal. One example of this cop and victim story includes that of Trayvon Martin. A cop named Zimmerman shot this African American seventeen-year-old boy while he was walking. Now, the court has found Zimmerman innocent however there was much confusion as to what really happened. When the court gave their verdict, several uprisings occurred. Most of them were violent and cops had to take control of the
What most people would think is that only black men and women are killed by police officers. Yet this year there has actually been more white individuals killed by police officers than any other race. This is only a problem, because when you read about police killings it is almost all about how police target people of color. With this idea it makes it so that people of color feel more like a victim in the country and are then scared of police officers, who are supposed to be there to help. The statistic of white people being killed by police officers is not covered by the media, because it is not as intriguing or as controversial as the other stories. It is very important that people know that police killings as a whole is an issue not just police killing minorities. Using social imagination and looking at this problem you can see why you would not want one group to feel victimized, which would lead to them striking back at the people that are there to help
To illustrate, majority of blacks are stop by police more than any other racial groups. Police brutality is base on ethnicity. Officers seem to target black communities for many reasons. Racist cops might view blacks as less innocent compared to whites. Growing up as an African American you witness hearing your parents telling your male siblings to respect officers and to interact with them differently than they would do their families and friends. After the fatal shooting of Mike Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The public wanted justice because the incident was not handled properly. The people wanted to express their concerns. After this incident I remember more allegation from black communities begin surfacing that the police use excessive force against them,
When addressing the topic of racial inequalities and tensions, a current issue would be the Ferguson case, or the Eric Garner case in New York where an African American was shot and killed by a white Police officer. These occurrences have sparked national debate about racial profiling and racial prejudice as well as ensued chaos through riots and protest. However, if you look back earlier this year the same exact incident happened, except the races of the officer and the victim were reversed, in this case, no riots, no protesting, or any national debate occurred. Why was the same amount of attention not drawn to this case the the Michael Brown Case in Ferguson? Why was there more outrage, and coverage
The officers were acquitted of use of excessive force and abuse. This started riots in Los Angeles that rocked our country. This was the beginning of a stigma and stereotype that would be placed on all police officers. The stigma was that Rodney King was brutally beaten because he was black. The media portrayal of incidences across the nation since 1991 only heightened the stereotype. There was a very similar incident in Ferguson, Missouri in 2014 with the shooting of Michael Brown by a white officer. The coverage for Ferguson lasted for weeks and put the police in a very negative light. The Portland Press Herald states that “many police think they’re being stereotyped as racist and brutal” (Wise). There also seems to be a stereotype within a stereotype. Besides the stereotype of police officers profiling young black men, is the stereotype that all young black men are thugs, especially if they’re in neighborhoods known for gang and drug activity. “Our country 's history, culture and social divide feed a subconscious attachment to stereotypes, even in the minds of people with no measurable racial bias.”
As many people see in the news nowadays, some police officers have been seen on television and in videos that black males are being killed by white officers (males). But what people do not know is that there is news that is biased because the news will give you what they want the public to know or what will catch the public’s attention. And this is what makes the minority (race) upset because they think that officers are intending to kill black males. In contrast, what the police officers try to do on the daily basis is to make the street and the community a better place and they do not wake up in the morning thinking to themselves that they want to kill someone just for the heck of it.
For the social institution of education or specifically high school the major sociological theory that seems to best describe it using the best using the sociological theory is the functionalism theory. High school education serves a vital role in American society with preparation for later schooling and a general preparation of students for their roles in society as young adults.
In America, police brutality affects and victimizes people of color mentally and socially. Social injustice has become a major issue, which involved the principle of white supremacy vs minorities. The current police brutality that has been occurring is culturally disconnecting ethnicities from one another. According to Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell, “…the cultural disconnect is very real; you have the weight of generations of abuse on African Americans,” (Flatow, 2016). For example, over the past four years, there have been countless acts of police brutality. The three key deaths of Eric Garner, Philando Castile, and Alton Sterling have become the face of police brutality in the year 2016. People knew that it was unequal treatment of black people by police in the United States and they made it known by creating #BlackLivesMatter.
Let’s begin with the most known, Rodney G. King. Rodney was caught by the Los Angeles police on March 3rd, 1991 after a high speed chase. He was beaten by officers with their batons. A video was taken of the whole incident. The officers were acquitted. Numerous people of all colors became livid after they heard this. There were protest and riots, although many just wanted whites and blacks to come together. There are several other accounts of police brutality among individuals. To name a few; Robert Davis, Frank Jude, Steve Biko, Sean Bell, Kathryn Johnston, and the list goes on and on. What many might not notice is all the names I stated are black individuals. Zachary Hammond was a white unarmed teen who was killed on July 26, 2015. His case did a lot of attention but not nearly as much attention as any of the people I stated above. This proves a good point that Caucasian people can be shut out when it comes to police brutality. It seems as many don’t believe that whites are brutalized by police. This can be an example of falsely stereotyping one another. There are other ways we falsely stereotype one another. For example if you live in an area where there is a high population of one color of individuals no matter black or white and abundance of the police officers who watch over that area are the other color, it’s not hard to make an assumption that those officers are racist when they use excessive
The turmoil and stability of an area are correlated with the crime incidents that take place. In most cases, the extent of such incidents is largely dependent on upon the law enforcement the police practice in that area. The Ferguson incident in 2014 is the best case to demonstrate how the police practice of law enforcement caused a tragedy, and it led to a heated discussion on whether there were police brutality and racial profiling. On August 9, 2014, an 18-year-old black man named Michael Brown was fatally shot by a 28-year-old white police officer named Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri. When issues of crime and race emerge, the society comes into chaos. Points of view on the blame or blamelessness of Darren Wilson were profoundly separated;
America is currently living in a period where racial divide is the highest it has been in a long time. There is a divide between police officers and citizens, but most notably a divide between police officers and people of color. Alton Sterling, Freddie Gray, Sandra Black, Philando Castile, etc. have all been cases where a life has been lost at the hand of a police officer.
In 2016, The Washington Post reported that Black males were three times more likely to be shot by police in comparison to White males regardless of whether they were armed or not (Jan, 2017). This was the case in the 2012 murder of Trayvon Martin. Martin was confronted by police officer George Zimmerman when he was walking late at night. The two got into an argument, and Zimmerman shot Martin, who was only seventeen years old. Zimmerman claimed that Martin had been acting suspiciously and that he was only defending himself, but Martin was found to have been unarmed at the time of his death (“George Zimmerman Found Not Guilty of Murder of Trayvon Martin,” 2013). Jan has revealed that some have suggested that more Black police officers could deter this type of behavior, but Indiana University’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs has reported that Black officers are just as likely, if not more likely, to profile and become violent with Black citizens. Black officers have been shown to be tougher on the Black community in an effort to make those communities safer (Jan, 2017).
Emile Durkheim is another sociologist who used Herbert Spencer’s theory to explain the change in society. He believed that society is a very intricate system of interrelated and interdependent parts that work together to maintain stability (Durkheim 1893). This ensures that the social world is held together by shared values and languages. He wrote the Division of Labor.
At first I didn’t know what to really expect from taking an online sociology class for class. To be completely honest, I thought I would be reading a lot of boring articles and then writing about them. It turned out that I was wrong. I was able to see what sociology pertains to and how it relates to our lives. It’s funny to think that almost everything in your life is controlled by someone else. Your interests, hobbies, and even clothes aren’t really solely your decision. You may be thinking “no way I am being influenced and I make all of my decisions consciously” but in fact that is not the case.
Protests around the world have taken place to fight for justice in the black community. The immense number of deaths of unarmed black men and women is a clear sign that they are more likely to be killed by police than white people. Physical violence and excessive use of force by the U.S. police towards African Americans are seen in the news regularly. “People, including police officers, hold strong implicit associations between blacks, and probably Hispanics, and weapons, crime and aggression," said Jack Glaser. Police brutality statistics show that African Americans are three times more likely to be murdered by cops than any other race. Racial disparity in the United States is a coherent reason for the increase of criminal injustice in the United
Before I started taking the course of sociology I wasn’t really expecting to learn anything, it was just supposed to be an easy online class. However, that was not the case. It challenged my mind. I started to see sociology all around me, starting with family, then friends, and how I see things overall in general. The fact that we have an everyday life in which there are patterns in ways of living is what sets a platform for a sociological breakdown and for being a part in what we do. A better way of understanding ourselves. We use sociology in many ways every day. One central and important study of sociology is the study of everyday social life. Everyday life and sociology are definitely two different words and situations, but they tend to hold a close relationship. While sociology is the study of the human interaction, everyday life consists of everyday human interaction. Everyday life is filled by human beings interacting with one another, ideas, and emotions. Sociology studies the interactions with all of these and shows how mere interaction resulted in things such as ideas. For an example, race and ethnicity are important concepts in the field of sociology and are ones that are studied a great deal. Race plays a large role in everyday human interactions and sociologists want to study how, why, and what the outcomes are of these interactions. Current sociological theories focus mainly on how there are many different factors in our everyday items of life, like movies. We were assigned a final to write a review for a movie in sociological form. The movie that was on the list that also happened to be one of my favorite movies, Toy Story. When we were assigned the assignment, I never thought about how in-depth it was with sociol...
