Today’s generation in America is widely affected by social media, but the real question that millions want the answer to is what is the real impact? “76% of American adults online use social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest, as of July 2015, up from 26% in 2008. On social media sites like these, users may develop biographical profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research, and share thoughts, photos, music, links, and more. ” Social media has been the cause of countless problems, but also the solution to numerous issues which is why it is so hard to decide if it is more helpful than it is a burden or vise versa.
The younger individuals of this society typically claim that social media is an advantage in today’s world while the older individuals typically argue that social media is putting our future societies at a disadvantage and that the younger generation is simply “too invested” in social networking and technology. the speed of communication, privacy, impact on students, relationships, careers, personalities, etc. Quite frankly, there are always two sides to every story and it’s all about one’s personal perspective. Young adults in America normally are for social media because it is what a majority of them are most acquainted with.
Therefore, they are more comfortable with using social media compared to elders in America. While social media is the quickest, most convenient way of getting the news out and heard, it also allows false information to be spread which leads to rumors, misrepresentation, and/or false advertisement depending on the situation. Social media is well known for providing help for students to do better in school by being able to communicate with their peers or teachers when they possibly need help with understanding a topic or assistance on an assignment. Consequently, students who abuse the use of social media are more prone to having below average grades because they are easily distracted by social media and don’t normally have enough self discipline to put their devices away while they handle their school
work. Elders in America generally argue that social media is creating a barrier between people and face-to-face interaction. Statistics show that from 2000 to 2011, less physical interaction reported went from 8% to 34%. Social media also has its pros when it comes to communication and interaction because some may use social media to get to know another before they meet to speak in person, and social media is the largest source used for making plans to have face-to-face contact. The older individuals in this generation also normally claim that social media is hurting today’s employees because they might be using it inappropriately such as making posts about illegal things or even something that their employer just simply may not agree with. Furthermore, younger people see social media as a tool for employment. Many use social media to pursue a job because social media is a source for job-seekers and for employers. Employers are constantly making posts about positions available, etc. One of social media’s main controversies is how it is affecting one’s health. Social media can be a great thing for someone who is reaching out for work-out, dieting, or habitual tips. Social media allows everyone to access any remedy they feel may work for them but social media also has it’s downfalls when talking about effects on health. Social media has caused the amount of people with depression to increase drastically.
“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. The world is more connected today than it has ever been in the past, and this is all because of growth in technology. What has yet to be determined though
There are lots of different theories and ideas that psychologists as well an any scientist has about couple and family relationships. The one element that seems to be something more and more common between romantically involved couples is emotional abuse. The saying “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me” is a lie that people tell themselves that will make them feel better about their situation. A lot of women as well as men are feeling the abuse that words can come with. Many people have access to social media daily. Sometimes people do not even think about how much they rely on social media. Many jobs would not exist if it were not for the social media; jobs like computer repair and even the people who created the computer and social media websites would not have jobs. People of today need to take a moment and realize and think about if all this social media use is
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
A recent article in Time magazine titled, “You Asked: Is Social Media Making Me Miserable?”, overlooked the various studies conducted on social media’s effect on people’s lives. Social media is a major part of people’s lives across the world. It provides them with information and allows them to connect with others at the click of a button or tap of a finger. Author of the article, Markham Heid writes, “Social media now dictates how people interact with friends, read the news and navigate their day-to-day existence” (TIME). However, the accessibility we now have to everything and everyone around us can lead to some negative effects. Social media keeps changing in terms of content and user interaction, and as we adapt it to it, it can do more
The rapid growth of technology in our society has become more dominant than it was in the 17th and 18th century. Today, technology is used for almost everything in our day to day lives. But the most common usage of technology is for communication and industrialization. However, every good thing has its disadvantage if it is over used, and since technology has become very dominant, it is used by both young and older people but more predominant among the youth of the today. Even more, technology has brought about social networking such as Facebook, Twitter, my space, piazza.com, instagram, tango, and last but not the least texting. According to socialnetworking.procon.org, “47% of American adults used social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Classmates.com in 2011, up from 26% in 2008. [26] on social media sites like these, users may develop biographical profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research, and share thoughts, photos, music, links, and more” (procon.org. 1). Although these sites help many Americans to connect with their family and friends, have we really thought about how these sites are discouraging some students to spend less time with their books, how young adults are losing their marriages, the indecent behavior it is promoting, and how it has escalated texting and driving in our society? Obviously not!
Did you remember to tell your cousin happy birthday on Facebook? Do you know how many people liked your latest picture on instagram? Or how many retweets did you get on your totally relatable and borderline inspirational tweet? As of January 2014, 74% of online adults use social networking sites (Rainie). Also more than 9 out of 10 American teenagers use social media(Blaszczak). Because of social networking we are becoming more connected than ever before. Important information can spread faster than wildfire, and we now have the ability to have friends and relationships all over the world. With the ability to communicate and interact with anyone at our fingertips what could go wrong? Well...lots of things.
