Throughout life we lose grandparents, parents and grow apart from close friends but sibling relationships can be one of the most enduring relationships an individual will have throughout their lifetime. Although there are many things that can affect sibling relationships such as gender, age gaps and sex composition, this paper will examine the association between the parent-child relationship and the sibling relationships in adolescence. Based on the family systems theory which suggests that families are made up of interconnected subsystems that influence each other (Whitchurch and Constantine, 1993), it is not surprising that researchers use this theory as a way to study the effects that one relationship may have on the other. By examining the research, it is clear that the parent child relationship has an unquestionable effect on siblings’ relationships. The current literature supports this claim by presenting evidence based on the warmth/conflict within sibling relationships, parent’s differential treatment of their children, as well as the indirect/direct involvement parents have on their children’s sibling relationships.
People believe most siblings have a love/hate relationship but the amount of one emotion over the other may not be directly the siblings own doings. Variables such as the parent-adolescent relationship can shape how siblings interact with one another whether one consciously notices or not. It seems that every sibling doesn’t always have a great relationship with their older or younger siblings. In the movie “Real Women Have Curves”, we have two sisters, Anna and Estella,who seem not to get along in the beginning because of their differences, but at the end they become the best of friends because they have similar dreams and learn to support each other. The advantage of Anna and Estella’s relationship is that they benefit from each other. The whole story is that you don’t always realize how much you have in common with your siblings until you realize that you have similar dreams and can be there for each other.
Every home has sibling rivalry between the children throughout the years of them growing up. It is perfectly normal and the majority of the time a harmless factor. Children have balanced and fair competition that teaches them how to share and to help them understand it doesn’t hurt to lose. Siblings often fight and argue on the daily without anyone getting hurt, but parents should be able to identify between healthy sibling conflict and hurtful abuse. Sibling abuse is the most common form of family violence and many acts of sibling abuse occur when the older or more powerful sibling has control over the victim. It has been found that sibling physical abuse occurs much more frequently than abuse by parents. Sibling abuse is defined as the physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse from one sibling to the other. It is estimated that 53% of children physically abuse a sibling each year. Older siblings are much more likely to abuse the younger siblings, especially older male siblings, while younger female siblings are most likely to be victims of sibling abuse. Sibling abuse often goes undetected or slips under the radar because parents think it’s normal, or choose not to take action. A parent’s reaction is vital in sibling abuse, as it gives a chance for remediation and healing for both the perpetrator and the victim.
The family unit has always been an integral part of every person’s development. Naturally, the parental figure plays an overwhelming influence in the maturity of the child, but sibling interaction can be just as great. It’s easy to generate within a family, especially one with two or more siblings, because as children get older, age differences arise and spark rivalry. For example, some people believe that sibling rivalry is more intense or will be more frequent when it comes to how siblings interact with one another. However, gender does play an influential role in the outcome of sibling relations and rivalry. Furthermore, gender affects go hand-in-hand with parental treatment.

My sisters and I have grown closer with every year. Whether we are shopping or watching movies back to back, I help flourish a close bond between my sisters and I. My sisters and I share closeness I will never find with anyone else, and I can only hope our bond continues to grow.
Many people grow up with a sibling, in fact eighty percent of people in the United States and Europe grow up with a brother or sister (Dunn 1). Most people can agree with the statement that growing up with siblings has impacted their development and personality. This topic has been researched by psychologist and sociologist for decades; which has provided both positive and negative outcomes of growing up with siblings. Children can benefit from growing up with siblings because they can learn from their siblings, gain social skills, and their siblings may become a valuable asset in one’s life.
My brothers and sister are the best motivation to me. It is not every day that we get along but when we do then it is a good day. Every day they make me want do better, not only for myself but for my mom and them also. They encourage me to do better now so that my future is bright later on. Family is always the best to have on your team especially for their support because they genuinely mean it and you know that it is coming from their heart. I know I can count on all my brothers and sister to be there for me when no one else is because they are family. I hate that they are growing every day and getting older to experience the real life. There are so many different types of family relationships. Whatever form a family takes; it is an important part of everyone’s life. My family has played an important role in my life. Good family relationships serve as a foundation to interactions with others. Supportive families will help children to thrive. The quality of the family relationship is more important than the size of the family. Making the relationships priority, communication, and providing support for one another is key to developing relationships. Family relationships are what make up our world today; they shape the ways that we see things and the ways that we do things.
