Some people practice their lives away to be talented at something, but others, like Selena Quintanilla-Perez, were born with it. With close family by her side, she made lots of hit records and made her dreams come true. She won lots of awards for her music and found time to get married and spend time with her family. Selena aka “ Queen of Tejano” started her career really young, and it came to a tragic end to early. A woman with an amazing voice, personality and amazing fashion sense was taken too early.
Selena was born April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas to her mother and father Abraham and Marcella Quintanilla. Selena was the youngest of three children. She had an older brother, Abraham the second aka A.B, and sister Suzette. When Selena

Her father Abraham did not approve of their love and threatened to exterminate the band if she kept seeing him. So they saw each other in secret, but she got tired of hiding it, so they went and eloped without her family knowing. Unfortunately, that didn’t last long the radio stations found out as soon as it happened, and she was scared to tell her dad that day so they waited a day after and he was alright with it (Selena). Even though she had the money for a big home, she made her house in a working class district in Molina in Corpus Christi, Texas right next door to her parents. She was also considered a poor rich person …show more content…
Her funeral was held in Corpus Christi at the arena where she recorded her smash hit Selena Live. She died right before her career was about to get big. She had recorded six song for her crossover album, and she also made her film debut as herself in Dos Mujeres, Un Camino, a Latin soap opera. Nevertheless, Selena’s record Dreaming of You entered Billboard Magazine’s pop album ratings chart, at number one, the second highest after Michael Jackson’s History and it was number one on the Latin Fifty (Selena). Her life wasn’t just remembered in music, but in a film about her life that starred Jennifer Lopez as Selena, Jon Seda as her husband Chris, Edward James Olmos as her father, Constance Marie as the mom, Jacob Vargas as A.B, Jackie Guerra as Suzette and Lupe Ontiveros as Yolanda. Today, Corpus Christi, Texas still gets lots of fans who visit her gravesite, her monument by the beach she grew up near, the Selena Boutique and the museum established in her
After Papagayo went bankrupt Selena’s family packed up and moved to Corpus Christi,Texas. Selena’s father Abraham loved music and
My first knowledge of her came from the movie that was produced about her life. This movie included her childhood, her rise to fame, her relationships with her family and her husband, and her untimely death. She was a stunning flower that bloomed very young and kept growing with no sight on stopping. She had a gorgeous appearance. She had big brown eyes, ever changing hair styles, and a petite figure. Her husband was just as cute. A smaller guy but not too small. Selena and Chris fit together like two pieces of a puzzle. I developed a deep admiration for these two people and the things they experienced in their youth. I was always looking to learn more about their lives and what happened in Selena's tragic end that shook the world. After finding out that her widow wrote a book about her life, I was excited to get it and begin reading. I wondered if the movie had been completely valid. What did the movie leave out? How did Chris felt about her death? How does he feel now about all that transpired after Selena's death since this was not a perspective that the audience got to clearly see the movie? So, I went immediately, to buy the
Selena, “Le Reina de Tejano”, was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson. She was the youngest of three children of Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Marcela, his wife. At a young age, Abraham had a strong passion for music that he still has. During the 1950s and 1960s, him and his friends made a group called “Los Dinos” and played at nightclubs and restaurants. Even though his passion for music, he gave it up when he got married and earned a job at Dow Chemical as a shipping clerk.
Selena is a very well known name in the Latin-American community. She started her music career while she was still a child with her dad’s group Los Dinos. Selena married her lead guitarist and ended up being killed by her “biggest fan.” After her death Selena became even more popular.
Fame never comes without a price and Selena paid that price by living a short, difficult childhood. While eight year old girls were outside having fun Selena was out singing at bars, weddings, fairs, and restaurants. She lived in an unstable household that eventually relied on the family band, “Selena y Los Dinos”, to eat and have a roof over their heads.
"I am a positive person, I never think of the glass as half empty. I just keep pushing forward" Rosie Perez the proud woman who declared this quote is a person who overcame many obstacles and difficulties to bring success in her life, despite her many hardships and traumatizing past.
Selena was amazing on the stage and the crowds loved her. It really showed when she came out with "Buenos Amigos.” “Buenos Amigos” was a collaboration with Alvaro Torres, and it became a huge hit! The song skyrocketed to number one spot on the Billboard’s Latin charts, and this introduced her to audiences throughout the United States of America. With everything that was going on Selena took a break from her crazy schedule to mary Christopher Perez, who was the band’s lead guitarist on the April second of 1992. When Selena came back, she continued to grow even more in popularity with her hit song "Donde Quiero Que Estes,” and she even reached wide markets for her music career! Selena’s fame was growing and it enlarged record sales. In July of 1994, she released Amor Prohibido. The Amor Prohibido album would soon sell more than one million copies! Amor Prohibido was one the top selling Latin album of the year. It was also called Tejano Music Awards’, Album of the
Cinco de Mayo, also known as the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, is a national holiday in Mexico that commemorates the 1862 Mexican victory over the French forces of Napoleon III in Puebla, Mexico. This holiday, celebrated on the fifth of May, has deep roots in Mexican culture, but in American-Mexican culture as well. Cinco de Mayo serves as a proud reminder of an unlikely victory, as well as a day to express and cherish Mexican pride and heritage.
Esperanza, the most liberated of the sisters, devoted her life to make other people’s lives better. She became a reporter and later on died while covering the Gulf Crisis. She returned home, to her family as a spirit. At first, she spoke through La Llorona, a messenger who informed La Loca that her sister has died. All her family members saw her. She appeared to her mother as a little girl who had a nightmare and went near to her mother for comfort. Caridad had conversations with her about politics and La Loca talked to her by the river behind their home.
Our lady of Guadalupe is the most venerated and respected by the Catholics. The appearance of the Virgin caused a great commotion in the Catholic Church. Ever since the Virgin's first appearance, Catholics have respected and acquired so much faith to the Virgin. The lady of Guadalupe has so many faithful followers that believe in her without any hesitation because of the miracles that she has made for the people that were once suffering and were miraculously helped by her. Because of the help that she has provided for those who were suffering people never forget her and they celebrate the day of her appearance every year by doing parties in her honor. The Lady of Guadalupe’s appearance certainly changed the belief of Catholics and, I believe
The traditions my parents instilled in me at a young age are important to me. They are part of my Latin culture and identity. One of the most important traditions that I value the most is our devotion to “La Virgen de Guadalupe” (The Virgin of Guadalupe), and although I don't go to church or share a specific a religion, I believe in La Virgen as a protector and a guardian figure and maintain her presence in my daily life.
Jennifer Lopez was born in the Bronx, New York on July 24, 1970. She was born in the United States to Puerto Rican Parents, Jennifer considers herself to be a Puerto Rican and she is very proud of her Hispanic heritage and culture. Her father is David Lopez, a computer specialist, and her mother Guadalupe Lopez, a Kindergarten teacher. Her parents recognized Jennifer’s talent and enthusiasm for performing and at the age of five the enrolled her in dance classes. Her mother said “Jennifer always loved to sing, but she was also a great actress and knew that she would have a bright future ahead of her.” With the support of her parents Jennifer grew up to be a very sensible girl, who is still very close to her family. When Jennifer earned her million-dollar paycheck for playing the role in the movie Selena, she bought her mom a Cadillac. Even though they saw Jennifer’s talent at the age of five, their relationship was not always understandable. Jennifer made a major decision and that was not to go to College. That decision was very disappointing to her parents who wanted her to go to law school. Her parents supported her pursuit of a career in show business, they did not wanted to be in the expense of her education. When Jennifer told her parents that she was not going to College and law school, they thought it was really stupid to go off and try to be a movie star.
For many years, unjust treatment of Mexicans and Mexican Americans has occurred in the United States. Over the years, people like Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, and Emma Tenayuca have fought to improve civil rights and better treatment for farm workers. The textbook that I have been reading during the semester for my Chicano History class, Crucible of Struggle: A history of Mexican Americans from Colonial times to the Present Era, discusses some of the most important issues in history that Mexicans and Mexicans Americans have gone through. Some of these problems from the past are still present today. Not all of the racial problems were solved, and there is a lot to be done. I have analyzed two different articles about current historical events that have connections between what is happening today and what had happened in Mexican American History.
There are three identities that all people have but depending on the culture, they chose one dimension to emphasize and downplay the other two. In the Mexican-American culture, they tend to value the family identity the most. Martin and Nakayama (2013) define familial identity as, “The sense of self as always connected to family and others” (p. 172). This was shown in the film Selena many times. The family was the most important aspect of their lives and that is the way they wanted it. Every decision that was made revolved around the family and how it would affect it. A specific example that illustrates this from the movie is when Selena married her guitarist, Chris. Her father had told her s...
She was somewhat of a hero to Cuban people; seeing as though she had been a Cuban refugee, and became a great success in the U.S. Her recent passing was a devastation, not only to the Cuban society, but to all Latinos and many Americans as well. Which brings me to family. My Mother and Aunts grew up listening to and admiring Celia Cruz, so you can only imagine their reaction to her death. Our entire family is in mourning.
