“Selena grew up in Lake Jackson, Texas”(Biography.com)“Selena grew up speaking English, but her father taught her to sing in Spanish so she could resonate with the Latino community.
She learned the lyrics phonetically at first, and eventually learned to speak Spanish fluently.”(Biography.com)Selena’s songs now are in Spanish, so that’s something huge. She didn’t grow up knowing Spanish, she got taught it even though English was her first language. Speaking a language FLUENTLY and well is quite difficult for some. This “obstacle” might not be a huge one, but it’s still something difficult to do , because her singing career was in the Latino Community area.I want to be able to inspire people like she has, to speak out and use my voice in a positive way. From my point of view, she was successful no matter where she came
from. I want to be able to inspire people like she has, to speak out and use my voice in a positive way. She was successful no matter where she came from. People want to be like Selena because she was self-reliant, she didn’t care about the money she cared about her fans and about people hearing her voice. She was a role model to so many and still is today. It shows that even when you come from a low income family you can still be able to become something big. With positivity and strength, you can become almost anything you want in life. There is no need to be rich in order to be successful . Rest easy Selena Perez, a loved young Latina star. Selena’s voice was so great, her voice was used beautifully for both singing and speaking up for others. There is no doubt that I am genuinely inspired by her simply because someone from such a low income family, regular schoolgirl, became into one of the world’s most loved Latina stars.

Selena Quintanilla Perez was born on April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas. Selena grew up understanding Spanish, but English was her first language. At the age of five Selena saw her brother learning to play the guitar and became jealous of the attention he was getting. She picked up a songbook and began to sing. Her family quickly turned their attention to her strong and beautiful voice. In the first grade Selena excelled at a game called Jump the Brook, in which two ropes are placed side by side and each kid takes a turn jumping across.1 In middle school Selena was in honors classes and made A’s and B’s. Selena used her allowance to put clothes on layaway. As a teenager, Selena hung all of her awards on the wall next to the staircase in her family’s house. As an adult, Selena was very involved with kids. She was a spokeswoman for the D.A.R.E. Program.
Selena’s musical career started when she was a young kid. She had sang music her whole life, from the age of 8 when her father, Abraham, formed a band with his kids. The band name was Selena y Los Dinos, and Selena and her siblings played at various weddings, fairs, bars, restaurants, and other places. This was very time consuming for Selena’s childhood, but Selena
She won a lot of awards and achieved amazing records in her musical career. The band that her family formed not only helped her find fame, but it also helped her find love in a musician named Chris Perez. (Hispanic 2) Once she rose to stardom, Selena was not corrupted by money. It appeared that her fame made her cherish her family a lot more and become less selfish by supporting charities.

Jennifer Lopez was born in the Bronx, New York on July 24, 1970. She was born in the United States to Puerto Rican Parents, Jennifer considers herself to be a Puerto Rican and she is very proud of her Hispanic heritage and culture. Her father is David Lopez, a computer specialist, and her mother Guadalupe Lopez, a Kindergarten teacher. Her parents recognized Jennifer’s talent and enthusiasm for performing and at the age of five the enrolled her in dance classes. Her mother said “Jennifer always loved to sing, but she was also a great actress and knew that she would have a bright future ahead of her.” With the support of her parents Jennifer grew up to be a very sensible girl, who is still very close to her family. When Jennifer earned her million-dollar paycheck for playing the role in the movie Selena, she bought her mom a Cadillac. Even though they saw Jennifer’s talent at the age of five, their relationship was not always understandable. Jennifer made a major decision and that was not to go to College. That decision was very disappointing to her parents who wanted her to go to law school. Her parents supported her pursuit of a career in show business, they did not wanted to be in the expense of her education. When Jennifer told her parents that she was not going to College and law school, they thought it was really stupid to go off and try to be a movie star.

Selena is a very inspirational film in my opinion. Within the film we see that there is a sense of finding, understanding, and dealing with Latin identity. Selena’s father was a second generation Mexican American, in which during his time the Spanish language was not accepted and thus was punished if it was heard. Thus, Abraham having the ability to teach his kids (third generation Texans) Spanish while they were young only spoke to them in English. However, due to her talent and expectations from society, Selena learns to speak and sing phonetically in Spanish, with the help and coaching from her father, and hence she becomes very fluent in the language. Furthermore, I can say that Spanish language is one issue that arises in the Americas
Covers of songs have existed for decades, and have exceptionally increased in popularity throughout the years. In result, many classics have been manipulated and transformed to create a new perspective of a song using the artist’s musical styles and abilities. However, for many the original piece from the legendary icons are much more preferred. Selena Quintanilla, who goes by “Selena,” only completed four LP’s before her death, but has sold well over 60 million albums worldwide since her passing. In addition, Billboard named her the “Artist of the Decade” in the 1990s, despite her passing in 1995. Specifically for "Si Una Vez,” Selena won the BMI Pop Music Award in 1994 for "Song of The Year", and considered a signature Selena Song. It is evident that Selena was a true legend, who opened many doors for other
To help me understand and analyze a different culture, I watched the film Selena. The film tells the life story of the famous singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Not only does it just tell personal stories from her life, it also gives insight to the Mexican-American culture. Her whole life she lived in the United States, specifically in Texas, but was Hispanic and because of that both her and her family faced more struggles than white singers on the climb to her success. Even though the film is a story about a specific person, it brought understanding into the culture in which she lived. Keeping in mind that these ideas that I drew about the Mexican-American culture is very broad and do not apply to every single person in the culture, there were very obvious differences in their culture and the one that I belong. Mexican-American culture identifies with their family rather than individualized or spiritual identities and the culture has gone through significant changes because of discrimination and the changing demographics of the United States.
At the age of ten, she became the lead singer in her family’s band “Selena Y Los Dinos.” The band features her brother Abie on the bass guitar and her sister Suzette on the drums. Her father managed and produced for the group and taught her to sing in Spanish as well. At first, she learned the lyrics phonetically then she learned to speak Spanish fluently. After her career took off, Selena gained many fans and with that, she needed to have someone to help her manage her fan club. Yolanda Saldivar was the head of the fan club, but she ended up murdering her because Selena caught on that Yolanda was stealing from her fans. The fact that she had been very influential on her fans, gave Gregory Nava the idea to make a movie on her essence. Due to how well the actors capture the lives of each character and how they contribute to the essence of Selena. Make the believability of the movie fitting because they truly delve into the character they are portraying. Selena is the only movie that holds true to the life events of Selena
Celia Cruz was born in Cuba, in 1925. Her father was a railroad stroker and her mother was stay at home mom. She grew up in a poor town named Santos Suarez, with 13 other siblings.
