Curie, Tesla, da Vinci, and Newton are all prestigious scientists that have changed the world. Each brought about new ideas and inventions, as well as ways of thinking about life. Curie was focused on chemistry, a specialty in the realm of science. Tesla created new technology in cars. Da Vinci engineered what is thought to be the first steps in man made aviation. Newton explained physics in a mathematical way for people to understand for centuries. As experts in their own practices, they make up the field of STEM. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Today, 15.1% of occupations are STEM related, being one of the largest areas of work, and that number is growing each day. The problem that challenges the world is that there is a lack of youth involved in STEM. When children are asked what they want to be when they grow up, the typical answer is a fireman, veterinarian, astronaut, or professional athlete or artist. Not as many will say a scientist, architect, or engineer.

Each of their brains are wired to understand what is going on around them, making sense of the real world. The problem is utilizing the abilities that are naturally given. For decades, biologists have been using stem cells to figure out possible cures for different diseases and even prevent them. Stem cells are cells that can become useable in certain tissues in the body (according to an infant), or tissue cells that are already found in blood, bones, the brain, and skin (in adults or children). Stem cells are being used for patients with lymphoma (begins in the immune system), leukemia (cancer of white blood cells), and other types of blood disorders.
This paper focuses on the benefits of stem cell research in the medical and nursing field. New technology is always being created to help us understand the way the human body works, as well as ways to help us improve diseased states in the body. Our bodies have the ability to proliferate or regrow cells when damage is done to the cells. Take for example the skin, when an abrasion or puncture to the skin causes loss of our skin cells, the body has its own way of causing those cells to regrow. The liver, bone marrow, heart, brain, and muscle all have cells that are capable of differentiating into cells of that same type. These are called stem cells, and are a new medical tool that is helping regrow vital organs in our body to help us survive. Stem cells can come from adult cells, or the blastocyst of the embryo. The cells that come from these are undifferentiated, and can be specialized into certain cell types, making them available for many damaged tissues in the body. While using stem cells in the body is a main use, they are also being used to help doctors understand how disease processes start. By culturing these cells in the lab and watching them develop into muscles, nerve cells, or other tissues, researchers are able to see how diseases affect these cells and possibly discover ways to correct these diseases. While researchers have come very far in using stem cells, there are still many controversies to overcome when using these cells.
There is no doubt our educational system is more complex than ever before. There is much to consider when looking at the balance between theories, proven methods, and the reasons why we chose to invest such time into our children’s education. In this paper I will touch on these theories, methods and the importance of the education.
The gender gap that results in the absence of women in STEM is progressive and persistent. Not only is this an issue of equity, but a lack of female participation in STEM results in a lack of diversity among perspectives regarding solutions to problems and other scientific endeavors. The gender gap in STEM can be seen as the result of several factors including teacher bias in the classroom, a chilly climate from male colleagues as they progress through their careers, little societal support for wanting a career and a family, lacking role models in their study of interest, and an overall lack of science preparation when it comes to pursuing a STEM career.

When you think of STEM jobs, you don’t necessarily even realize there’s a lack of women in these types of jobs. Science, technology, engineer, and math jobs are primarily a male dominated field. In the early years around 1990 there were more women going into these types of jobs at, but compared to today, there has been a decrease of women who are graduating in STEM fields. This is alarming, considering the job opportunity growth for the STEM field in the future. STEM jobs are expected to grow at least 20 percent or more by 2020 according to the occupational outlook handbook. With the lack of women in these fields, there will be a lot of job openings without anyone to fill. Women may not find the STEM field appealing due to the typical stereotype of STEM jobs, the amount of underrepresented women, and dealing with sexism in the workplace. STEM field needs to recruit more girls and women by providing more pathways for young girls and be less sexist.

When STEM programs started to be implemented earlier and earlier, the coalition announced it was because the earlier they reach the children, the more the children become interested and stay interested in those lines of work, leading to more successful careers made in STEM fields. “Teach the children, so it will not be necessary to teach the adults” is a famous quote by our former president Abraham Lincoln. In modern days, we are schooling instead of educating. This produces an uninformed society who is trained to spit out information instead retaining it. My hometown, Scranton, also known as “the Electric City”, has an abundance of ignorant citizens. It was a very toxic community to grow up in. This affected the youth in the community by not projecting their potential into their minds. To have a well-educated populace, we need to make sure we graduate well-rounded youth after grade school. I believe this can be achieved by following common-core guidelines, while also striking their creativity within the subjects so that they are retaining information, not only memorizing it. I will discuss my beliefs on the roles of the teacher, the children as learners, the curriculum, and the purpose of schools in society.
In the first chapter of STEM Lesson Essentials, it asks you to write down your own definition of STEM education. Here’s what I wrote: STEM education is interdisciplinary lessons engaging the students in real life scenarios through hands on activities and explorations. Although I had not yet been properly given the direct definition till further in the chapter on page four. I was surprised to find that I was not that far off from what was given as the “real” definition. It states that some of us may have even been a STEM teacher at some point in their teaching career with out even knowing it. Looking back on my teaching, I believe this to be true for most of us at some point.
One very important factor in every life is the education received as we mature. Education in all subjects is necessary to become a well-rounded individual. Even so, I feel that my subject area has more significance in one’s future because every person uses mathematics every day. Students need to understand why mathematics is important and why they will need it in the future. The way to do that is integrated into the views of the role of the teacher. Teachers need to be encouraging role models that provide students with safety, nurturing, and support in the classroom, along with providing excellent instruction by allowing students to explore and expand their minds in the content of mathematics. Teachers should set high expectations for all students and persuade the students to live up to those expectations. Along the same lines, teaching and learning are complementary concepts. Students need for the teacher to provide them with the knowledge that will be used not only in that class but also in their future endeavors. ...
Everyone says this generation is the future, the people and the citizens of tomorrow’s society. Except if this generation is not educated to grow and progress with the planet and learn how to help it, there will be no “next generation”; the earth simply will not be able to sustain our life forms. This is why science education is important to the future of our lives and our planet. Where if not for the innovation of science and its cures, we would still be living in the Dark Ages where the simple flu would have killed a family, and smallpox and other diseases caused epidemics and panics. Every day science classes are educating kids on the basics and the higher levels of science. Out of all these kids a few are bound to become doctors and research biologist that will help cure cancer, the planet of harmful pollutions, and more. One might say that science was the one that started the pollution in the first place, but as you can see, it has started to help fix the damage it has caused. Also, science education (although thought impractical by some) surrounds our everyday life and is need to understand some of nature’s simplest things. This is why science education is so important in the 21st century.
