Romanticism and Transcendentalism are both literary movements that were appreciated in the American literature. Both movements are quite similar; however, Romanticism is a strong motivational force that depicted emotions, patriotism, and imagination. Dark Romanticism, on the other hand, is a branch of Romanticism that focuses on the evil qualities of the man. Not only it is a branch of Romanticism, however, it is a reaction of Transcendentalism. Transcendentalism focuses on self-realization, empowering the connection between man and nature, and the goodness of man and nature. Throughout the years, American authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allen Poe projected dark romantic features in their work, “Young Goodman Brown” and “Tell-Tale Heart”, where they show the conflict between the good and evil. However, Emerson portrayed transcendentlistic characteristics in his book “Nature” as he shows the power of knowledge, nature, and divinity.
Edgar Allen Poe, one of the famous authors in the American literature, depicted dark romantic characteristics in his work. Poe’s vague style of writing helped him to signify the main character’s mental state. His ambiguity and lack of details of the setting and time helped Poe’s readers to mainly focus on the theme and the idea behind his writing. In “Tell-Tale Heart”, Poe wrote in first person and used romantic characteristics such as imagination, irony, and emotion to highlight the main character’s thoughts and mental state. Furthermore, in the beginning of “Tell-Tale Heart”, the main character shows his love for the old man as he states, “I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He have never given me insult” (Poe, pg.715). Clearly, reading from his perspective, the old man seems to ...

... of the man, but shines into the eye and the heart of the child” (Emerson, pg. 510).Such imagery allows the man to understand that nature is more than a collection of integrated objects. Moreover, to appreciate nature, a man has to free his mind from society’s distractions and to see nature through the eyes of a child. Children are inexperienced and will not reminisce past events while observing nature. Seeing this world through a child’s eyes gives the world more meaning and value.
Clearly, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allen Poe, and Ralph Waldo Emerson manifest romantic and transcendlistic aspects in their work. However, Emerson had a different platform where he discusses the goodness of man and nature unlike the other authors. The use of imagery, irony and symbolism contrasted both meanings of the different literary movements, Romanticism and Transcendentalism.
