Robotics surgeries in the Medical Field
Surgery is an important aspect of the medical field. They are performed by a team of medical experts led by medical doctors. However, in recent years, robots have been used in the hospitals to carry out some medical duties. These duties include medical checkups and surgeries. The article Robotic Surgery by Mount Carmel Health Care System, described the procedures as follows:
“Robotic surgery is the latest evolution of minimally invasive surgical procedures. During surgery, three or four robotic arms are inserted into the patient though small incisions in the abdomen. One arm is a camera, two act as the surgeon 's hands and a fourth arm may be used to move obstructions out of the way. Patients are surrounded by a complete

According to Peter Angelos, (MD, PhD), chief of endocrine surgery and associate director of the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics, University of Chicago, he says that, “The ethical responsibility we have as physicians is to provide the highest quality with the greatest efficiency or the lowest cost. I would suggest there is an ethical imperative to benefit each patient to the greatest extent possible,” he said. “If using a robot leads to greater or better outcomes, then the cost to the insurance company should be a secondary concern.” But when a patient could be asked to bear additional costs or the complete cost of a surgery, then disclosure of the cost and potential financial harm is “absolutely relevant” (Frangou, 2015). The cost of robotic surgery should be discussed with patients regardless of who is paying. The patient has the right to know how every penny will be spent. They also need to know if there are any side effects after surgery that might require additional medical
St. Joseph’s Hospital of Atlanta is a not-for-profit hospital founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1880. This is a 410-bed acute care hospital that has been recognized throughout the Southeast as one of the leading specialty-referral hospitals. To be noted, St. Joseph’s Hospital is considered to be Atlanta’s oldest hospital and the only Catholic hospital in Atlanta area. “St. Joseph’s was the first hospital in Georgia to perform robotic-assisted, totally-endoscopic closed-chest heart surgery, according to the hospital”. St. Joseph’s is renowned for its most comprehensive minimally invasive robotic surgery program in the world and is the region’s preeminent provider of cardiac, vascular oncology and orthopedic services. Others services are available, such as: neurologic, vascular, gastrointestinal, respiratory, orthopaedic, and cancer care, among other specialties. St. Joseph’s is ranked amongst the 50 top hospitals and has been recognized as one of a few hospitals around the world to receive Magnet Recognition for Nursing Excellence. The medical staff consists of more than approximately 750 physicians, with research services and the most advanced technology available.
Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure on a joint where an examination and treatment is performed with an arthroscope, which is inserted into the joint through a small incision, about 4 mm (1/8 inch) long. A special fluid is used to visualize the joint parts. More incisions might be implemented in order to check other surgical sites. Then other miniature instruments are used and the surgery is performed. Arthroscopic procedures can be performed to evaluate or treat many orthopaedic conditions including torn cartilage, ACL reconstruction. Unlike other endoscopy, arthroscopy must be done in an operating room. It is technically possible to do an arthroscopic examination of almost every joint, but is most commonly used for the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle, foot, and hip.

Patients should have the ability in all situations to decide what happens to their bodies. This should be accompanied by the knowledge of risks associated with any particular procedure. Some physicians may attempt to circumvent this right for personal gain by omitting important information or simply utilizing force. This is where the debate over human experimentation arises. In a more civil setting, some patients don’t have the cognitive capacity to choose what is done with their tissues. In this case, the line of ethics becomes obscure.
Robotic Surgery is an emerging technology that utilizes purpose-built robots to perform surgical procedures on patients. At present these robots are not autonomous, they are controlled by a surgeon at all times.
.Robotics can completely change the medical field, surgical robots can be thought of as extra integrations in surgery which increase the quality of the operation. The goal of surgical robotics is not to supersede the sur...
The healthcare industry has come a long way in terms of technological advances. These advances have had significant benefits in diagnosis, treatment, and the way medicine is practiced today. Unfortunately, these technological advances also come with ethical issues and dilemmas the healthcare professionals must face.
Medical ethics are a questionable matter. If the surgery helps the patient and doesn’t cause harm it is ethical. If it causes harm and stress it is unethical. One example of an unethical surgery is the mind altering surgery Charlie Gordon (a mentally handicapped, 37 year old man who lives in New York) underwent. Two neurosurgeons Doctor Nemur and Doctor Strauss performed the surgery. The surgery was an attempt to triple his IQ of 68 and make him a genius.

A surgical technologist is an adventurous, inspiring, and active job to have, working under the bright lights, wearing masks, strong suction, sharp, shiny tools and most importantly seeing opened life on the operating table with many adventures to come in the operating room.
Therefore, it is important for the reader to understand that compared to previous methods, robotic surgery is indeed an enhancement to society. Research has shown that with robotic surgeries, bleeding has been significantly decreased. This is due to the smaller incisions that are needed for the procedure, but it is also due to the fact that the movements that are being controlled by the surgeon have the added feature of tremor control in the device. This feature actually compensates for the natural hand tremors of the surgeon and makes for steadier movements during surgery. (Lanfranco, Castellanos, Desai, & Meyers,
How effective can this machine actually be? This surgical system is controlled 100% by the surgeon and is programmed to make sure it does not do anything on its own. There is a misconception about robots, which is the main reason why the Da Vinci Surgical system is being questioned by the FDA. This surgical system is a minimally invasive surgery that is more precise and leaves smaller incisions which leads to many more benefits postoperative like quicker recovery times and smaller
A robot-assisted surgery demonstrates how far America and the whole world have come in means of technology within a particular working field. The necessity for a more superior technology within hospital settings are best supported by the development of the da Vinci Surgical System. In 1991, when the surgical system was introduced to the globe, many acknowledged that this system improved three different aspects of regular laparoscopic surgery: it gave doctor...
As the world progresses through multiple innovative eras of technology, the people want more inventions to assist their everyday lives. Today, the field of technology mainly revolves around the subject of artificial intelligence. In particular, a company known as Hanson Robotics, strives for artificial intelligence, or AI, to match the intelligence of a human. As a result of the increased intelligence, the technology, robots for Hanson Robotics, will have the same work potential as humans. Although Hanson Robotics believes that their robots will help the human race, they cause a potential harm to human jobs and lives.
...d decision-making capabilities robots have to offer, they can be used for complicated surgical procedures in the very near future. Precision handling and perfection in surgical tool alignment are vital for surgeries that occur at the micro scale (like neuro surgery).
