In the twenty-first century there are numerous jobs in the world. It can be challenging deciding what to choose what career path, knowing all possibilities is nearly impossible, even if you know a certain field you are interested in. Well here is one job to add as an option: Respiratory Therapist. Respiratory therapists, RT for short, are specialized healthcare workers who help patients with respiratory system, the organs that help take in and release air in short, problems. Examples including asthma, heart attacks, shock, etc. People are able to look up information about the job, but how would they know what it’s true experience is like based on an article? To obtain a greater understanding, I interviewed a person with this career and asked …show more content…
The environment that my interviewer tries to maintain is a positive, friendly, and at times disciplinary atmosphere. The usual time, after graduating college, for the RT program requires two years, learning about the equipment and education in chemistry, biology, etc. However, like all science departments, you never truly stop learning new techniques or refreshing your education since science is constantly evolving and expanding. Although this RT had received a bachelor’s of science degree and thus when it came time to take prerequisites, requirements prior to the career, their credits transferred over, thus only taking one year. At UCLA, since that is where my interviewer went to college, got hired immediately after finishing through internship at UCLA Medical hospital since they saw the person work as a student, and saw them in practice. There was (unsure if still to this day) no wait time to get into the program, unlike say a nurse, which was a two year wait. No one starts with a full-time job until they learn about the workspace by a senior respiratory therapist. Eventually the RT moved up to become now night-shift supervisor, who is instead of just a few, is responsible for all patients under the RT department, providing support, and distributing
The career that interests me the most is Occupational Therapy. I chose to interview Debbie, a Registered Occupational Therapist who received her Bachelor’s in Occupational Therapy from Western Michigan University. She is working at Lynwood Manor which is a long-term rehabilitation facility.
Observing therapy assistants in the field and seeing what they do in their jobs was an eye opener for me. Getting to experience on-the-job shadowing helped me to identify the roles of a therapy assistant better than reading or talking to people about the job description. First, I shadowed at Athletico Physical Therapy, an outpatient facility in Festus, MO. Paul Kohler is the Occupational/Hand Therapist that I shadowed during my experience. There were several different injuries that I saw, ranging from people with work related injuries to jamming fingers in machines. After observing Mr. Kohler throughout the day, I got to see him interact with patients and perform activities that helped his patients in their rehabilitation phase of recovery. He told me that the improvements he sees first hand from his patients is rewarding and he feels achieved when he sees patients make steady recoveries. From this experience, I also learned that occupational therapy offers a diverse number of avenues for employment. I was pleased to know that I can specialize in a specific area if I desire to do so in the

For my informational interview I spoke with a nurse who has experience working on a medical surgical unit in a hospital setting. She has been a nurse for 10 years. She also has her bachelors degree in nursing. I started my interview by introducing myself and explaining what my assignment was about, and how she could help me tremendously with answering some questions regarding her nursing career, and what she does as a medical surgical nurse.
Surgical Technicians are needed tremendously for a surgical procedure to run smoothly. For surgeries, hospitals and offices are staffed with a trained medical team ready to take action when they are needed too. The most important position beside the surgeon is, a Surgical Technician. ‘A Surgical Technician can be related to how they interact with a patient, how they prepare the tools and operating room for surgery, along with their ability to assist and react to the needs of a surgeon.”
I chose a career as a medical assistant because of the rewards I knew I would experience on a daily basis. Seeing a patient smile because I have helped them understand, or just making them feel comfortable with their visit, is just one of the many perks of my job. Upon graduating from an accredited college such as The College of Health Care Professions (CHCP), I now work for one of the most reputable hospitals in my area. Within two short years of committed studies, I obtained my associate of applied science degree, and then went on to obtain my certification as a medical assistant. There is nothing I have found more fulfilling, strong, secure, or rewarding then choosing to become a medical assistant,
When searching for a career, many people want a job that will be rewarding. One job that fulfills this need is an occupational therapy assistant. An occupational therapy assistant, also known as an “OTA,” is someone who makes it possible for people to achieve everyday tasks which they normally could not do. These tasks include eating, getting dressed, bathing, and many more “typical” tasks. It is not easy to become an OTA. There is a long process that needs to be completed. This includes, difficult college classes, applying to an OTA program, licensing, training, and certifications. Many other factors come into play when deciding if being an occupational therapy assistant is the right career such as, salary, job outlook, job opportunities,
The occupations that I have chosen to analyze using the three elements for this assignment are paraprofessional, what I am currently, and a teacher, what I am going to college to become. Teachers and paraprofessionals work side by side, collaborate, plan, and share many of the same experiences. However, paraprofessionals are often not treated as equals and has created some ethical judgement regarding treatment of the paraprofessionals from other teachers and administrators in the business of education. I want to use this assignment as an opportunity to distinguish the true professional using the elements designed for this course.
Caring for people is my passion. My senior year of high school is when I witnessed my grandmother live on a ventilator for about a week. It awakened a new level of passion in me to care for people with cardiopulmonary problems. The Respiratory Therapy Care profession has intrigued me with how they improve the quality of life in their patients. I will enjoy working closely with patients in addition to working high tech equipment. By entering into this program and graduating out of this program I know that this will satisfy my personal goals for the next five years in many ways. The continues challenges of trying to figure out what’s wrong the heart that day or what’s wrong with the lung the next day will always keep me on my toes. It will always
Occupational therapy is a career focused on helping people who have or are at risk for developing an illness, injury, disease, disorder, condition, impairment, disability, activity limitation, or participation restriction. An OT’s scope of practice may involve addressing “the physical, cognitive, psychosocial, sensory, and other aspects of performance to support engagement in everyday life activities that affect health, well-being, and quality of life” (Definition of Occupational Therapy Practice for the AOTA Model Practice Act, 2017). I don’t feel like occupational therapy is the right career for me because I feel like I lack certain characteristics that someone in this profession should have.
My decision to pursue a career as an Anesthesiology Assistant is hinged on three factors; first, a desire to advance in the healthcare sector and be able to take up higher responsibilities in patient care; secondly, an intentional process of building a healthcare career that would be personally fulfilling and rewarding; and thirdly, embarking on a career path that will enable me to integrate my prior education, experiences and skills, and use them as a backdrop for effective care delivery. My undergraduate degree is in Psychology. I undertook studies in this area because I had always had a deep-seated desire to help people recover from adverse situations. At the same time, I trained and work as a medical assistant, which has enabled me to have a lot of patient contact. Based on my knowledge of psychology and my clinical experiences, I began to explore career advancement options
Occupational therapy has a multifaceted nature providing endless opportunities to serve a wide range of people within many environments, which is just one of the reasons I love this occupation. My long term goals enlist the desire to maximize my knowledge and abilities to care and supplement the lives of anyone that may cross my path in this career. I have seen occupational therapy positively impact the lives of people around me, and I strive to be a bigger role on the team helping make that happen.
There are several reasons why I can say I would like to become a respiratory therapist, the respect that respiratory practitioner receive, the importance and the involvement that respiratory care has in patient care, for one day I will be working with all kinds of patients, from peds to the elderly, from subacute patients to the critically ill. I also enjoy seeing a patient who was under my care in the intensive care unit (ICU), now being discharged and knowing that I played a part in the patient’s ability to go home. The knowledge and the way a respiratory care practitioner can critically think in stressful times. I'm a kind of person that get involved, take the initiative and set the pace to accomplish what needs to be done. The final reason I can think of right now is that I'd like to be a part of the healthcare team providing care to patients. RT’s work with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare staff to decide what is best for the patient. Respiratory therapy seems to be a pretty good profession for me. I’m a hard
A surgical technologist is an adventurous, inspiring, and active job to have, working under the bright lights, wearing masks, strong suction, sharp, shiny tools and most importantly seeing opened life on the operating table with many adventures to come in the operating room.
When your friends are feeling upset, what do you do? Listen to them cry into your shoulder going on and on about an ex boyfriend or their family member? For as long as it might take for them to get over or solve the issue. Or do you just leave them alone and hope that they can do it on their own? If you picked the first choice, the caring friend, maybe the right employment choice would be a therapist. Therapists or counselors often gather information based on what a patient might tell them and simply give one choices on how to handle a situation in the most healthy way. Sometimes it can just help having a unbiased person and their perspective. The main goal is to be able to find a career that fits almost perfectly to one’s interests and
