Many people will be keen to tell you how television and film show off all types of race, gender and sexuality evenly. They will shout and scream about how everyone is equal and racism and sexism are a thing of the past (clearly the media shows this). A film has one queer side character and everyone is jumping on the bandwagon to praise the film to the heavens for representation. This is not representation. Think about it. The last show you watched, the main characters were probably straight and white, and if you were lucky, there may have been one person of colour or queer side character thrown in. we have never known any different. Positive representation of all races can make such a difference. Recently, Marvel brought out merchandise revolving around the new black superhero in their latest film. Think of all the children that saw these in the shops and released that they too could be superheroes. Every child deserves to see characters of their race; to be able to think that they are a superhero as well for a while. This does wonders for their self-esteem and happiness. Marvel has taken a step in the right direction; it’s time that everyone else follows suit. Our society is not just made up of straight white people. There is more diversity than ever, and our media should reflect that. Some people may say that our society is mostly straight and white. They are straight and white, so why would they want to watch a character of another race? They might not be able to relate. However, what they are so scared of happening to them is the reality for millions of people. Imagine growing up and never seeing someone of your race on television. What sort of mindset does this develop? It tells children that they don’t matter and that they will never be shown in a way that they can relate to. This is a horrific way for anyone to feel, especially in this day and age. No-one should have to feel like this, ever. I don’t want a role reversal. I want equality. It’s not just different races that are shoved to the side in television and film. Many sexualities are erased as well. So many people spend their teenage years, and sometimes much longer, thinking they are broken and not worthy because they don’t fit in with the characters and the people shown on television. They think that because the show writers don’t make characters of their sexuality, that they are wrong to be that way; that they need to change. As humans, we need reassurance and company to ensure we feel respected. Without representation, people don’t get that. Sadly, when different races and sexualities do get shown in television and film, it is often not positive.
Racism and heteronormativity have evolved to the point where they are no longer obviously present in society; however they still exist, just in a less outright form. So many jokes are made, especially in television, about races or sexualities that are normally completely marginalized, only to be brought out to act as the punch line of a joke. This is no way to treat each other. These ‘jokes’ make people feel terrible about themselves. Racism and heteronormativity need to be completely erased; and the first way of doing that is representing them positively in the media. This doesn’t mean every bisexual and multi-racial character is a good person, it means that they are treated as a valid and rounded character with their own personality beyond their sexuality or race. Poor representation of marginalized groups is almost worst than none at all, as it creates a negative atmosphere in respect to those groups. Our society needs to start moving towards equality, and we are not going to get there without showing everyone in the media. Television and film are mass medias and reach millions of people every day, but they need to be showing the right
messages. Representation and diversity in the media needs to be addressed. Now.
In America, essentially everyone is classified in terms of race in a way. We are all familiar with terms such as Caucasian, African-American, Asian, etc. Most Americans think of these terms as biological or natural classifications; meaning that all people of a certain race share similarities on their D.N.A. that are different and sets that particular race apart from all the other races. However, recent genetic studies show that there’s no scientific basis for the socially popular idea that race is a valid taxonomy of human biological difference. This means that humans are not divided into different groups through genetics or nature. Contrary to scientific studies, social beliefs are reflected through racial realism. Racial realists believe that being of a particular race does not only have phenotypical values (i.e. skin color, facial features, etc.), but also broadens its effects to moral, intellectual and spiritual characteristics.
In the two essays, “Just Walk on By: A Black Man Ponders His Power to Alter Public Space” by Brent Staples and “I’m Not Racist But…” by Neil Bissoondath, there are both differences and similarities. Our daily lives are affected by race whether we are aware of it or not. How we live different aspects of our lives depend on the colour of our skin. From the types of jobs we have, the income we earn, where we live etc. In societies fundamentally structured by race, it is important that we do not abandon the notion of race, but instead pioneer a revolution in the way that races are understood. In this paper, I will examine how the dominant groups in society define race in terms of biology, which leads to the notion of white privilege, which is their advantaged position in society, at the expense of other racial groups.
Although we have taken monumental strides in the past fifty years towards racial equality and diversity, it is still commonly argued that popular culture lacks some sort of racial representation. However there have been a variety of critiques regarding the media’s portrayal of same-sex couples and gay marriage. People who go solely off the media’s depiction of gay and lesbians could have a skewed view of what they are actually like. This could be detrimental for youth who are developing their ideas of what homosexuals are actually like and this is their only source of information on it. This leads to stereotyping different types of gay people. Also for young people, the media depiction of gay people has led to the idea that this is “cool” and treat their homosexual friends differently.

Specifically, the media likes to depict homosexual males as the “gay best friend”, ad female homosexuals as dykes. A perfect example of this can be found in the characters of Damian and Janis from the movie, Mean Girls. When the main character, Cady, moves back to the states, she makes friends with Damian and Janis. Damian has a higher pitched voice and talks like a high school diva. He tells Cady what to wear and how to attract her crush, and even lends her a pink shirt when she doesn’t have one.

When television first appeared back in the 1940's, times were very different. What we would consider completely normal today would have seemed quite taboo just a few decades ago. For example, in 1953, Lucille Ball was not allowed to say the word "pregnant" while she was expecting baby Ricky and it wasn't until the 1960's show Bewitched, that we saw a married couple actually sharing the same bed. Considering how conservative the television networks were back then, it is not hard to deduce that something as controversial as homosexuality would be far from discussed or portrayed at any level. It was only in 1973 that television premiered its first homosexual character. Over the next three decades the emergence of gay and lesbian characters in television has increased and decreased as the times have changed. Due to the resurgence of conservatism that came back in the early 1980's, homosexual topics were again reduced to a minimum. Since that time though, as many people can see, there has been a rise of gay and lesbian characters on television. One might think after a first glance at the previous sentence that there has been progress among gay and lesbian communities to have a fair representation in the media. However, if one looks hard at the circumstances surrounding their portrayal, many people may start to believe that if there has been any progress then it has been quite minimal.
