In 1491 a young man named Christopher Columbus landed on a land that the original people

called Tierra Del Alto Señor. Which means (Land of the noble land.) Christopher decided to rename is

San Juan Bautista. In honor of John the Baptist. But Spanish gave settlement too Juan Ponce de León.

Who then provided the settlement at Caparra and also became the first governor. In 1519, Caparra

decided to relocate to a nearby coastal to help with a healthier environment. Soon came the rename too

Puerto Rico which means (Rich Port). Keeping the capital San Juan. Due to the confusion over the

names led to the switch the island took the name Puerto Rico and the town became San Juan. Due to

In Puerto Rico there are all types of tradional festivals such as the party’s after Christmas. The

people of Puerto Ricans march up and down the streets of Puerto Rico singing and dancing celebrating

Christmas. (Avancemos 180.) Some more special holidays are Three Kings Day (Día de Reyes) this

holiday is a religious holiday is for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico it is the Wise Men visiting the

newborn Christ include children stacking boxes of hay underneath their bed for the camel the Wise Men
