With all debates, there is a con side, but also a pro side. Video games are no exception. Including the skills honed and many other benefits that come with video games, some people believe that video games are a positive thing. In 2013, the video game industry rose in sales. Software sales jumped twenty-eight percent from 2013 to 9.5 billion dollars. (Wagner 2) During this time, new games and consoles were being released, thus making more sales. According to the Entertainment Software Association, (ESA), an average of nine games were sold ever second. (Wagner 2) With statistics like that, its hard to imagine how much of those sales were bought by youth, or bought for youth. In some cases, video games are found to be detrimental to social skills. (Barenthin 3) Social skills are very important to the development to children. If adolescents experience social skill deficiencies, it could lead to emotional, cognitive, and behavioral problems. Going back to addiction, there have been many studies that have found addictiveness in children. In February of 2008, a team at Stanford University School of Medicine found that areas of the brain responsible for creating feelings of addiction and reward are activated during game play. (Barenthin 2) After realizing how addicting games could be, two professors from the University of Utah wanted to know the reason why people get into games. In 2008, these professors examined 152 high school students. When asked for reasons for why they played games, they all differentiated. There are many people who say that videogames and TV will rot your brain and cause brain damage. Plenty of research and articles are against children playing video games, but there are some that are in favor of video games, and that number is growing every day. Video games can have some medicinal uses from helping patients in physical therapy to improving ones vison. Many people do not see these uses and for every one for video games there are five who are against it, however as that number is slowly growing.

Understandably, grieving parents and sympathetic citizens are searching for a cause for this "outbreak" of youth violence. It is natural to assume, "when children, the symbol of innocence, commit the severest of crimes, then something must be going wrong with society." (see Maker)
Videogames are amazing they promote creativity, team-work and social interaction. Video games actually work to increase how good your eyesight is. One study done by scientist’s Daphne Bavelier and her team found that playing five to fifteen hours of action games (e.g., Call of Duty) a week increased how good the participants vision was in two ways "The first way is that they 're actually able to resolve small detail in the context of clutter… The other way that they are better is actually being able to resolve different levels of grey”. Sure games have violence in them but honestly what doesn’t, films and TV are chock full of it, heck even Tom and Jerry promote violence and animal abuse plus there is a reason that those big shiny red “18” stickers are put on games so that it is clearly shown that children aren 't supposed to be given access to these specific types of game. When people have face to face contact they develop skills in learning how to communicate with people and eye to eye contact you don’t get that through a video game. Being in a social environment promotes social skills. A social environment can provide opportunities for one to learn how to behave properly in different situations. When playing video games most of the time the person is alone and confined in room. Meaning there is very little social interaction between the person and the game. When people play video games they play in sessions and they can last a long time even all night. People get so wrapped up in playing these games they blow off their friends and family meaning it’s hard to maintain social relationships.
