After 3 months in solitary confinement, Alvin was ready to get out of that six by eight foot cell. He was tired of his maggot infested lunch. He only sees daylight for the thirty seconds that the guard opens his door to deliver him his lunch. He kept track of the days he has been in solitary by counting the times that the guard delivered his lunch. Today was the thirtieth visit. Officer Thomas knocked on Alvin’s cell. “Get up Boy!” said Officer Thomas. Officer Thomas told Alvin that he had some bad news. He said that Alvin had to stay in solitary confinement because there was no more room in the prison. Overpopulation of prisons is a growing issue in the United States.

Former offenders commit crimes at higher rates than the general population, so in combination with technical parole violations, many ex-offenders recidivate and return to prison within the few years of release. As of 1994, more than two-thirds of state prisoners were rearrested for one or more serious crimes within three yean of release. Almost half of those released returned to prison during that time frame for parole violations or new convictions (Langan & Levin, 2002).
