The film poster of Percy Jackson y el mar de los monstruos, is for a movie directed by Thor Freudenthal in 2013. The purpose of this advertisement is to persuade viewers to watch the movie. The target audience is teenagers and young adults as they can relate closer to the characters because they are around the same age. Visual codes that are in this advertisement include aspects of Greek mythology, colours and symbolism and a representation of gender. The representation of gender is creating a focus towards the male figures in the poster. The colours in the poster is a triadic colour combination; blue, red and yellow. Greek mythology is a combined collection of Gods, demigods, and beasts. In this advertisement there are three references to Greek Mythology. The first is the Hippocampus at the bottom of the poster. The Hippocampus is like a seahorse and is very graceful and sometimes mischievous. The second reference is Poseidon’s staff near the handle of the sword. Poseidon is the God of the Sea. Seeing as Percy is holding the sword, we presume that he is related to Poseidon. The third reference is the Cyclops to the right of Percy. In Greek mythology, cyclopes are thought of as an evil beast who are violent and dangerous. But seeing as Tyson is to the right of Percy, it shows that he may be a good guy. Greek mythology seems to play a vital role in this poster, according to the three references. …show more content…
You can see that all male figures are in the top half of the advertisement and the females are below. The size of Tyson and Clarisse are the same which shows that they are new to the film but still, Tyson is above the Clarisse and Annabeth. Another representation of gender is shown with the sword being a phallic symbol. The sword shows strength and power and only the Percy is holding the sword. The representation of gender is shown through the characters of the

Together, they win Capture the Flag for fifth Cohort. Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief is about a young boy (around the age of twelve) who finds out that he is the son of the greek god Poseidon. Percy (short for Perseus) faces troubling situations that the reader can relate to and gain a deeper connection to the book. “How old was I?” I asked. “I mean. . . when he left”(Riordan 38). This quote gives some readers of the novel a personal connection through parental problems the world faces today. Riordan shows the hardship of being a single mother. This situation can connect to Jane Eyre by showing a want that both Percy and Jane want...love. With the connection to the reader as a foundation to the novels importance, it still does not exhibit value. Horn Book Magazine says “The novel is packed with humorous allusions to Greek Mythology...among with rip snorting action sequences, this book really shines” (Horn Book Magazine). With what Horn Book said about the novel it gives educational support that is taught in schools. “Rick Riordan’s (2005) popular Percy Jackson series for middle school readers provides a substantial link to greek mythology, utilizing Homer’s Odyssey and Lliad to create a window into classical texts” (Bright). By combining two complex and merit-able reads Riordan creates a novel that creates a stepping stone into harder literature to read and analyze. “Riordan
Percy’s relationship with other characters reveal a lot about who he is.The feelings with his mother is that there close. Percy feelings his dad is he thinks he’s a coward and Percy doesn't like his step father. Percy's feelings with his mom is that they are both close because in the text it says “But ever since, my mom went out of her way to eat blue. She baked blue birthday cakes. She mixed blueberry smoothies. She bought blue-corn tortilla chips and brought home blue candy from the shop. This—along with keeping her maiden name, Jackson, rather than calling herself Mrs. Ugliano—was proof that she wasn't totally suckered by Gabe. She did have a rebellious streak, like me.” This shows they are close because he calls her mom and cares about
...e realized he is from a Roman camp. Somewhere he thinks in San Francisco California called camp Jupiter he also knows where his strange markings on his arm came from; all the campers at camp Jupiter had their godly parent’s symbol tattooed on his forearm alone with dashes that counted how many years you where part of the camp for. Hera has switched the leaders of the camps who are Percy and Jason. Jason thanks Percy is at the roman camp, camp Jupiter. He just like Jason who doesn't remember anything about his past was thrown into a place where he does not belong. Hera switched them so the camps can learn to work together to find Geae and her evil minions the Giants and destroy them. They will build a giant flying boat that will carry a few campers from camp half blood to camp Jupiter, who will unite to seven heroes that are part of the great prophecy to defeat Geae.
This is the true start to Percy’s quest. He made a few friends in the camp and they agreed to go on this journey with him. Those accompanying him were his protector Grover and Athena’s daughter Annabeth. They also get some helpful tools fro...
For starters, Percy is the son of Poseidon, which I think is pretty awesome. Being the son of Poseidon also means that he can practically breath underwater without requiring those nasty gills people see on fish. Besides being able to breath underwater, Percy is also pretty great at being the comical relief in those tense monster fighting situations. Also, since Percy used to be the only main character in Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, I’m already used to the way he acts and talks to other characters. In all I love that Rick brought my favorite character Percy back into the
The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan is a fantasy- adventure novel that is based on Greek mythology. It's the second novel in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Percy Jackson has been having nightmares about his satry friend Grover Underwood. The first dream involving Grover running from an unknown force and hiding in wedding shop. At school a group of Laestrygoians attack Percy and his classmates in a game of dodgeball, but is saved by one of his friends Tyson and Annabeth Chase, one of his friends from camp. Annabeth takes Percy and Tyson to Camp Half Blood, the only safe place for demigods, which are kids who are children of humans and gods. All three of them take the
Percy is immensely brave. He is not afraid to do anything if it meant he could save another's life, like he
Greek Mythology in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Rick Riordan’s ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ focuses on Greek mythology and interprets this into a children’s story. Throughout the story, there are many references and adaptations to mythological tales, and each one is portrayed in a different way. Riordan writes this story as though Hercules, Zeus and Poseidon were still around today, and this would be the effect they would have on people in this day and age.
In this scene, two ancient greek chest plates can be seen in the background, and all three characters appear to be holding weapons. Because both the novel and the movie are set in modern times and involve ancient greek myths, they contain the historical narratives of a hero’s journey and a tale of redemption, which were both widely present in ancient greek mythology. In both the novel and in this film adaptation, Percy must undergo a quest to prove that he is not guilty of having stolen Zeus’ lightning bolt, and is joined on this quest by Grover and Annabeth, who are also present in this scene. During this journey, these characters are forced to travel to several varying locations, with this image being taken from an event that does not occur in the novel, and was used as a replacement for another incident. I feel that this event was most likely changed to further character development, while also being used to further the development of the story. In this film, the development of the characters has been altered, compared to the original development of these characters in the novel. In the book, Percy and Annabeth are both twelve years old, while in the film, both characters have had their ages increased to sixteen, which I feel was done to appeal to a
Over the course of this novel, Percy must embark on a quest to clear his name, much like Hercules had to endure his Twelve Labors. These Twelve Labors would prove to be a recurring theme for Percy throughout the entirety of his five-part series. While Hercules abandoned his quest with Jason for the Golden Fleece, Percy did not, and succeeded where the ancient hero had failed. Hercules was also directly referenced in Titan’s Curse in a flashback by Percy’s new friend and Hesperide Zoe, a goddess entrusted with protecting Hera’s apples which Hercules had stolen. Over the long chain of events throughout the entire series, Percy and his friends encountered and battled numerous monsters that Hercules had originally slain in his Twelve Labors, such as Cerberus, a hydra, the Nemean Lion, the Erymanthian Boar, and cleaning the Aegean stables, home to flesh-eating horses.
Common themes can be found across various pieces of literature. In the myth Theseus, Theseus goes to King Minos to fight the Minotaur and get their freedom from this evil King. Theseus does this and returns back victorious. In Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, Percy is sent on a quest to receive the Lightning bolt and return it back to Zeus. These summaries show that Percy and Theseus had to struggle against authority in order to do what is right.
Attention is first drawn to the two figures in the advert, one man and one boy. The relationship between the two will be investigated later, but it is assumed that this advert, by only featuring two male figures, is targeted at men.
At a glance, one can know, without reading the text, what the advertisement is all about. The advertiser has used a cartoon image as opposed to a real person image in the advertisement. This, however, does not mean that the advert is meant for kids or people who love cartoons. This step is always taken to reduce detail and avoid viewers over-dwelling on unnecessary aspects of the advertisement. The setting is also plain.
