Palm oil is used in a wide variety of foods and hygiene products. It is an oil made from the pulp of the oil palm, usually the African oil palm. There has been a lot of controversy on the health effects that palm oil has; a recent study has shown that regularly ingesting this oil can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, while another shows no correlation between the oil and the risk of coronary artery disease (Loki). While the health effects are still being debated, there is no question that this highly-used ingredient is killing rainforests in Malaysia and Indonesia, threatening many species, including the Sumatran elephant, tiger, and orangutan, as well as the Bornean orangutans and pygmy elephants, all of which are critically endangered …show more content…
Over 90% of their habitats have been destroyed, and many depend on relocation/conservation programs to survive. Some are killed for meat, but most often die from overcrowded habitats that don’t have enough resources to keep their population alive. In efforts to protect the population of these orangutans, it is illegal to capture, trade, or kill them, though this law is often ignored (Conservation and Rehabilitation). Luckily, there are a few rehabilitation centers who help relocate orangutans in direct danger from deforestation. Many of these programs, such as the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP), take measures to protect the Batang Toru Forest, which house the orangutans, to monitor the population and well-being of wild orangutans, and to breed orangutans in captivity to provide a safety net for the population to fall back on if needed (Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program - SOCP.). Thanks to their work, many orangutans have been saved and brought back into the wild, and 900 orangutans in captivity worldwide …show more content…
I was astonished to find out how much of the food my sisters regularly eat contain this ingredient. Doritos, Vanilla Wafers, Cheez-its, Kit Kats, pretty much any pre-packaged food in our house had it. Even though I was shocked to see how much palm oil my siblings consumed, I was even more shocked to find out how much I didn’t consume. As a vegan, I expected many of the vegan substitutes I have to contain palm oil, as many vegan food companies strive to make their food as healthy as possible and reduce the amount of “unhealthy” oils they use, such as olive oil or vegetable oil. However, there were only two items that I eat that contain palm oil: bread and Skittles (Sutter), and a few hygiene products that I use that contain the oil (Palmer). Out of all of these, the one I am most devastated about is Skittles. They are a staple in my diet and are the only candy I eat. Nevertheless, I understand that a candy is less important than an animal’s home, and will stop eating
“By the time we’re done, it’s quite possible that there will be among the great apes not a single representative left, except, that is, for us,” Kolbert deduces (225). Hunting a species has caused the endangerment and extinction of many species of animals and plants. Six out of eight species of the world’s bears are categorized as “vulnerable” or “endangered” to extinct (222). Advocating for rights of endangered species, and protecting the forests they habitat is a noteworthy method to prevent extinction caused by humans. As an individual, one could help by supporting and donating to organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund, the National Wildlife Federation, the Wildlife Conservation Society, and more (262). Humans may ease their conscience by not actively killing endangered species, but protecting them
Although the practice of collecting animals have been present since 2500 B.C (Dunlap and Kellert), efforts to keep animals in a safe and natural habitat have been poorly consummated. Psychological manipulation has consequentially drawn chimpanzees to mental illness, as in the article “How Abnormal Is the Behavior of Captive, Zoo-Living Chimpanzees?” Lucy P. Birkett and Nicholas E. Newton-Fisher wrote, “Many chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) kept in laboratory housing settings show a variety of serious behavioral abnormalities, such as, repetitive rocking, drinking of urine, or self-mutilation.” Social and maternal separation for the benifit of reasearch are linked to psychological traumatic as well (Dunlap and Kellert). Although through history the service of zoos have been for entertainment, it is a trivial reason for holding chimpanzees in confidment. Subsequently, it is inhumane to take primates from the wild and place them in a zoo, commercial, or laboratory setting, which strips them of their ability to act naturally.
Continuous human degradation of the Cross River gorilla is the primary cause of their dwindling numbers. An amazing species that once prospered in the jungle has been abused to near extinction. Because human interference is the cause of the gorillas decreasing numbers, it is humanities obligation to suspend the practices that lead to their demise. In doing so, we must also explore the options we have to repopulate a species with an intellect second only to humans. Aside from the obvious cruelty of this issue, repopulating the Cross River gorilla is important because the gorillas endangerment is just a byproduct of the unsustainable, and barbaric human interference that is destroying an entire ecosystem. In addition to the extinction of the Cross River gorilla, we will also lose a vast unexplored environment. To end this species demise, we must fight to control the issues that
Thesis Statement: Despite the rampant protests of animal welfare organizations on encaging primates in zoos since primates typically show abnormal behavior, zoos in the National Capital Region claim that human interaction and enrichment programs help alleviate the stress and trauma primates experience.
Biodiesel is considered an environmentally friendly alternative because it reduces the amount many toxic substances. Plants such as soybeans require carbon dioxide from the air to produce their stems, roots and leaves. During biodiesel production from soybean oil, carbon dioxide is produced and released in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is considered a green house gas (GHG). However, this cycle of GHG emission does not neccersarily contribute to the atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. This is because the next soybean crop will reuse the carbon dioxide emitted for its growth. Another important environmental benefit is that biodiesel reduces particulate matter (PM), hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. These benefits occur because biodiesel contains 11% oxygen by weight. Oxygen allows the fuel to burn better, resulting in fewer emissions from unburned fuel. And lastly, biodiesel fuels do not contain any sulfur and does not have an unpleasant smell when it is emitted from vehicles.
There exist in certain areas of rainforest in Indonesia timber barons who employ what are commonly referred to as logging gangsters. The victims of this social problem are not only the rare species that inhabit the rainforests, such as the Sumatran Tiger and Orangutan, but also those people who wish to do something to stop this depletion. Environmental activists and journalists attempting to document or protest the atrocities are often killed or severely beaten by the criminals. Like all illegal trafficking, the illegal rainforest wood trade exists only because there is an outside force demanding it. In this case, the force is that of high-income countries.
Cosmetics, soap, chocolate, and frozen meals. These general products all have something in common; they include palm oil, a resource found in oil palm trees located primarily in Indonesia and Malaysia. Palm oil is a valuable resource that is contained in many everyday products. However, the mass consumption of this ingredient caused wide deforestation in wildlife’s natural habitat and is leading to the endangerment of several animal species. Sustainable palm oil is grown and harvested by companies on private land to avoid deforestation and harm to wildlife, so people should consider purchasing products that include sustainable palm oil rather than palm oil taken from natural forests.
It is found that the positives of palm oil production are that the palm oil contains vitamins and is low in cholesterol which causes the lowering in cholesterol levels in humans. The palm oil is essential to the making of products including the cosmetics and cleaning agents. It can also provide the solution to poverty as $3000 per hectare of returns is provided. Also, it is found that the negatives of palm oil production are it results in the destruction of rainforests due to deforestation, it can cause extinction of species with 50% of decreasing for the orang-utan population, and it raises social issues with the loss of income and the dependence of the large plantations
After researching and observing the lives of orangutans I can support my hypothesis. The orangutans are restricted into a small area, fed when the trainers feed them, and live on the ground because there are no trees causing them to have a different lifestyle than the wild orangutans. The captive orangutans are taken care of by the trainer and never have to struggle to get food. They seem to sit and sleep at the same time, for majority of the time I was observing. There are no predators for them to have to fight off since they are separated, where in the wild they would have to protect themselves and in some cases their offspring. If an adult female were to give birth while in captivity, the offspring would grow up to have a completely different lifestyle than a juvenile in the wild. The juvenile is cared for and protected by the trainers more than they would be by their own mother. Being in captivity gives the primates the option of medicine in cases of sickness or an injuries. In the wild the primates have to live without the nurture of these trainers which is why they tend to live...
The social and moral implications of diminishing rainforest biodiversity are great. From a human welfare perspective, the livelihoods of tens of millions of indigenous peoples depend on the forests, but thousands are being pushed out of their homes because they lack the shelter and support that the forest once gave them (Salim 3). These groups have "developed knowledge and cultures in accordance with their environment through thousands of years, and even physically they are adapted to the life in the forest" (Nyborg). For many of the people living in these areas, the forest is the only resource they have providing them with food, shelter and cultural ties. With the invasion and destruction of their homeland, rainforest peoples are also disappearing.

For my final project I had a simplistic approach, I had used minimal colors and tried not to create a ton of objects surrounding the palm tree. The subject I was creating was a landscape of the ocean from a pirate’s point of view. The form of the project was created so the island with the palm tree would be the first thing you would see. This is because pirates would constantly search for land, whether it is to steal or find treasure on. The content of the project is the satisfaction and happiness you get when you see the palm tree and island. As soon as your eye appears on the focal point, you understand what the image is trying to tell you. Together all three: subject, form and content create unity within the image. Each one is important to get the story across to the viewer, which is a pirate view through a telescope.
Biodiesel is a non-petroleum based abettor ammunition which consists of the address alkyl esters of continued alternation blubbery acids acquired from renewable lipid sources. Biodiesel is about produced through the acknowledgment of a vegetable oil or beastly fat with booze in the attendance of a agitator to crop glycerin and biodiesel (chemically alleged methyl esters).
Great Apes are at the brink of extinction due to deforestation, hunting, and bushmeat trade. Our closest cousins are now viewed as economic commodities rather than valuable agents to the environment and humanity. In order to explore this issue, there must be an examinitation of why primate populations are dwindling, if these populations can replenish themselves, and what measures the international community is taking to alleviate the problem.
Haven’t you ever looked at your palms and ever wondered what the lines of your hands reveal about yourself that you didn't know before? well today is your lucky day I will tell you how to read your own palms.
