Overpopulation is an issue that majority in the world may never face, however, the ones that do experience this issue know the struggles that it can pose to the overall quality of life. There are multiple reasons on why overpopulation is an issue and why it can affect quality of life, but ones that have a major impact on the world is the shortage of food, overconsumption of fossil fuels, and decline in health care. These specific issues were selected as a result of the widespread availability of information. With over seven billion people on the earth, there are numerous areas that deal with overpopulation, but to classify an area as overpopulated we must first establish what overpopulation actually means. Overpopulation is defined as “an undesirable …show more content…
Food shortages are one of the major killers of populations and are something that we as humans deal with on the daily basis. Large populations have a large hindrance on the food we eat. The food has the potential to run scarce within our storages due to a higher demand in which our food systems cannot meet. As a result, our society will contemplate solutions to meet this speculated crisis. The solution formulated can either target the large populations, or the food systems. The earth is struggling everyday with a rapidly growing population. The approximation of growth is roughly two hundred thousand a day. This means that an increasing number of people are depending on the earth to produce food for their meals and this is a major issue. As a uniform society we are already struggling to depend on the earth for our food and a majority of our food that we eat is not all natural grown. The process of growing and harvesting all natural food is an expensive task and therefore will not always happen. With multiple nations living in poverty the dependence on processed and inexpensive food has become necessary. This paper 's goal is to help give examples for solutions to these problems from the …show more content…
When it comes to fixing overpopulation, the solution is simple enough to say the least. Money is the answer. To put it in better terms, taxes or rather tax exemptions. Throughout history, people have hated taxes and making people pay less taxes is something all cultures have common ground with. An effective way to slowly but surely make progress at combating overpopulation is for “government of various countries might have to come with various policies related to tax exemptions to curb overpopulation. One of them might be to waive of certain part of income tax or lowering rates of income tax for those married couples who have single or two children. As we humans are more inclined towards money, this may produce some positive results”(Conserve Energy Future). Most proposals associated with this idea suggest ending tax incentives for families having more than two children. The reason so the world population is increasing so much is because of so many families having more than two kids. “Choosing how many children to have is a personal choice, and one that many parents have thought about since their own childhood. However, with a global population of over 7 billion people, an American population of more than 315 million, and a national debt that is threatening to create economic collapse, it is time that the government stops providing tax breaks for
Thousands of animals are put to sleep each year due to not having any available homes for them to be adopted. According to Jennifer Sexton and Tom Warhol in Domestic Animal Overpopulation, “The average female cat can produce two litters of six kittens per year, a female dog can produce one litter of six or more puppies per year, making pet overpopulation a significant problem.” Animal overpopulation is costing money and you can help the pets with spay and neutering programs. A new solution is mandatory contracts for breeders and spay and neuter programs. This paper will talk about spay and neuter programs, contracts for breeders, and why some people don’t think animal overpopulation is a problem. Thankfully there are solutions to this issue of animal overpopulation.
Human beings appeared on this earth hundreds of thousands of years ago and eventually formed into tribes. They lived the life of hunter-gatherers and flourished at it, although not to our standards of population explosion, but they prospered nonetheless. The population of humans steadily grew at a very calm rate, “On the average, our population was doubling every nineteen thousand years. That's slow---glacially slow” (The Story of B 288). Then something happened. In the region of land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in what is now ancient Mesopotamia, and agricultural revolution was started bringing the practice of Totalitarian Ag...

The Neo-Malthusian dilemma is the worry that our food stocks will not match the population growth leading to famine and disease. This is a growing concern since our population is quickly increasing, we are not bringing new land under cultivation, and we are damaging the environment that is producing our food and sustaining our people. Between 1999 and 2011, the world population increased by one billion, Middleton(2013) noted that it took until 1804 for the world to reach its first billion. The population growth we have exhibited is exponential, and it is only scheduled to peak some time between 2050 and 21003 . Many countries are still expected to go through major population growth. We constantly hear about China and India but Africa is expected to overtake them both by 2050 and make up 23% of the global population4.These large populaces depend on land to grow their food. Urbanization is transforming some farmland into urban areas, like in China for example5 .This land is no longer being used for farming. Until the 1950s, we were able to develop new land for cultivation and thus produce more food, but since then we’ve had no new land to
In today’s society that we live in, there are countless of environmental problems that we face, such as global warming, fishing, pollution, and many other topics of that matter. These issues have affected our environment for the worse and have caused problems physically and economically. Yet, out of all the issues that effects our world on a daily basis, it is shown that overpopulation is one if not, is our biggest issue in our environment that is only getting worse due time, especially due to the rapid growth of the human population and the limited resources that are left on earth that we absolutely need to tend to our growing population. Even Dr. Charles A. Hall, who is a systems ecologist, states that, “Overpopulation is the only problem, If we had 100 million people on Earth or better yet 10 million, no others would be a problem.” Which helps prove that overpopulation is a major issue that we must act upon if we want to save our world.
It is a known fact that the world population is increasing without bound; however, there is a debate if this increase is a good thing or if it will prove catastrophic. The article “The Tragedy of the Commons” by Garrett Hardin discusses how the ever-increasing world population will exhaust the world of its natural resources, and eliminate human’s capability of survival. On the other side of the argument is Julian L. Simon who wrote “More People, Greater Wealth, More Resources, Healthier Environment.” This article proposes the theory that with an increase in population, human’s quality of life is amplified. One particular issue that they both mention and have drastically different views on is the future of agriculture and human’s ability to sustain it.
Global Overpopulation causes a variety of other problems like Resource Shortages, Overcrowding and Personal Freedoms, and Social Problems.
What if one day there was too many people living on planet Earth, using up too much of it’s resources? Overpopulation though is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “the condition of having a population so dense as to cause environmental deterioration, an impaired quality of life, or a population crash.” Ever since the 18th century, the theory of overpopulation has been a problem on many minds. There is a huge gap for the number of individuals compared to relevant resources here on earth, such as the water and essential nutrients needed to survive. This issue results from an increase in births, a decline in mortality rates, an increase in immigration, or an unsustainable biome and depletion of resources. All these idea about mankind
Overcrowding, overpopulating, limiting resources, worsening air and worsening water, dying species, paving of farmlands, deforesting our wilderness, and ultimately and eventually killing ourselves; our own people have such negative and false thoughts for this world and its’ resources. Why? Overpopulation and over consumption are only two of numerous false theories that people lead themselves to believe about our world. My conclusion: this world and we the people…are fine; things are not as bad as people exaggerate them out to be and we are neither overpopulated or over consuming.
Since the beginning of mankind, we have reached many great achievements. We have developed many technologies and theories to solve and explain many of our questions and to improve human life. Through our years of evolution, we have severely increased our own survivability. This has been a great achievement for us, but in the recent decade, overpopulation is becoming a great issue. In the recent years, the rapid increase in population growth has troubled many in the field of political sciences. Scientists like Ehrlich have calculated and expected our population to grow even faster if we do not act upon the increasing rate of population growth. The birth rate of our planet is increasing exponentially, meaning that the birth rate has surpassed the death rate and that the rate of growth will only increase if left alone. The politics of population is a debate that involves both the fields of sciences and moral and ethical considerations. Science may provide an insight of
Seven and a half billion. Enough steps to walk around the globe a hundred and sixty times. Our planet is trying to provide and sustain for a colossal number of people which is expanding every single second. Now the concern that has been put forth by scholars come from the idea that the consumption and effects to our planet by our current society is an international security risk that greatly compromises the future generations. Confucius even mentions this at the earliest start of civilization by saying:
Overpopulation remains the leading driver of hunger, desertification, species depletion and a range of social maladies across the planet (Tal, 2013). If you look at the world, most of the countries that are dealing with these problems are due to overpopulation. Impoverished countries do not have the money or resources to help them overcome this issue (Tal, 2013). Impoverished countries also do not have the medicine or technology to even prevent the most common of illnesses (Tal, 2013). Malnutrition is also affecting humans in impoverished countries....
A governor is able to own a six-thousand square foot home fully equipped with multiple security guards, a swimming pool, and far more rooms than needed. Meanwhile, in a neighboring town just miles away is poverty stricken land where someone calls home. It is surrounded by trash, with little food to eat, as the stench of sewage from the city coats the air. This scenario is foreign to people living in the United States. That is simply because this is a problem prevalent to ones living in Nigeria, West Africa. For decades, Nigeria has been infamously known for the non-progressive gap between the categorization of who is considered to be either wealthy or who is labeled as impoverished. It is a country filled with an abundance of resources, and
Globally, the growth rate per person of the human population has been declining since its increase in 1962 and 1963 which was at 2.20%. In 2009, the estimated annual growth rate was 1.1%. As of now the population of the world is at about 7,211,021,348 humans, which has gone up 4 billion people since the 60’s. Most of this growth is coming from the countries in high poverty. Rise in human population can cause problems such as pollution and congestion; these might be resolved or worsened by technological and economic changes. Over the last 100 years we have seen a fast increase in population due to medical advances and massive increase in agricultural productivity. The major fear is that high population numbers are putting a burden on natural resources, food supplies, and more.
One of the most complex issues in the world today concerns human population. The number of people living off the earth’s resources and stressing its ecosystem has doubled in just forty years. In 1960 there were 3 billion of us; today there are 6 billion. We have no idea what maximum number of people the earth will support. Therefore, the very first question that comes into people’s mind is that are there enough food for all of us in the future? There is no answer for that. Food shortage has become a serious problem among many countries around the world. There are many different reasons why people are starving all over the world. The lack of economic justice and water shortages are just merely two examples out of them all.
