My family if we go as far back as ancestry, we can date the Stewart’s back to Scotland and my grandmother her family originates from Sweden. I tend to think most of my family originated in the United states though, our ancestry dates far back to being in America is believe around the seventeen hundreds. Since my family has had most of their roots in America for so long the best way to describe my ethno culture in my opinion is to say it is in line with modern day Americans. I interviewed my grand parents, I chose them because they have lived a longer life than say my parents and have built more of a culture. They also have the knowledge bank and intelligence to address deep questions. Familial beliefs regarding HEALTH/health and ILLNESS/illness …show more content…
I thought my self how incredibly crazy I had sounded, of course they do just because they are their parents were not from another country did not make them culture-less. To answer the question my grandfather and grandmother are both culturally consistent. There was a question on the interview paper that said what religion do they come from and believe in and for both it was protestant Christian. Religion is such a huge aspect of culture for many people. This is know has been a consistent force throughout my lineage. As long as I have known my grandparents and other relatives they have always been religious. Like many other families in America my family also always participated in Thanksgiving, from the classic turkey all the way to the pies. I feel as the years have gone on my Grandmother and grandfather have never really cared much higher for eating healthy, exercising, or even some forms of meditation. Unfortunately they have been culturally consistent with not caring much for health and keeping the same habits. Things have not changed for my relatives because you cannot make someone do something they do not want to do. My grandmother and death grandfather enjoy the health culture they have now. Though my feeling on it is that they may not want to change because they are not aware of the benefits …show more content…
This does not mean that I do not have my days, where I am feeling careless. My family has never actively sought out ways to take care of their health, where as I do. I do my absolute best to eat healthier, exercise often, and put my body and mind first. I believe that health is empowering, makes you feel your absolute best. As humans we should always be looking for better ways to take our health to the next level, whether that be exercising, getting more sleep, eating good better, or meditation. I feel I have taken my health more seriously because I have more resources at my finger print. My grand parents said illness is not being able to live life the way you see fit. The interesting thing about that Is everyone’s perception of living life is different. This is a clear distinction for me, illness Is simply feeling unwell. This ranges from the common cold to cancer, it’s obvious that these two things game are drastically different. Illness could mean you aren’t performing at your absolute best version of
The author proves that there are families that do not follow these traditions and do not follow their races’ traditions. The author also appeals to emotion by talking about a time when she had her family participate in a Passover seder that she had put together where she talked about Egypt and how it relates to our social issues in today’s world. “But the kids insisted on buttering their matzohs and snickering through my talk. ‘Give me a break, Mom,’ the older one said. ‘You don’t even believe in God’” (39). Her children wanted nothing to do with their heritage and what the people of their race would do on a regular basis. They had also never seen their grandparents practice this type of religious tradition. To the author’s main point, just because they are Jewish does mean that they identify with and practice their Jewish heritage. The author also uses an anecdote at the beginning of her article to help bring people in by talking about how she was talking to a friend who was telling the author all about how she knew where she came from and she knew what her ancestor did thousands of years before this time. The author was then asked by her friend what her ethnic background was, and she said
Jean Giddens (2013) defines culture as “a pattern of shared attitudes, beliefs, self-definitions, norms, roles, and values that can occur among those who speak a particular language, or live in a defined geographical region.” (Giddens, 2013). A person’s culture influences every aspect that person’s life. Beliefs affected by culture include how someone interacts within the family, how to raise children, the types of foods eaten, the style of clothes chosen, which religion is practiced, and the style of communication (including verbal, and body language, slang used etc.) (Giddens, 2013). In addition to these beliefs, health care practices are also affected by culture. The cause
An individual’s culture and belief may significantly impact the type of services they require. In addition, it may affect the time, place, and method in the delivery of health care
Today when people move across continents with the help of technology their culture and heritage moves along with them. Almost each and every continent is populated with people from different nations who have diverse traditions and cultures. Thus knowledge of health traditions and culture plays a vital role in nursing. People from different cultures have a unique view on health and illness. Culture-specific care is a vital skill to the modern nurse, as the United States continues to consist of many immigrants who have become assimilated into one culture. I interviewed three families of different cultures: - Indian (my culture), Hispanic and Chinese. Let us see the differences in health traditions between these cultures.
There are cultures that have very different views on things such as family dynamics and health care than what I’m used to. For example, there are some cultures that do not believe in seeking healthcare when they are ill or receiving medications or blood if needed. However, my family always believed in taking us to the doctor and taking medications when we were ill. There are also some cultures that have very large families that they are very close to however I always had a small close-knit family. I am able to see how these different scenarios could affect the nursing care provided by assuming that other people and families have the same beliefs that my family had growing up. However, this is why it is important to ask questions and do research about a particular culture before making assumptions. I also believe it is very important to avoid assuming that all cultures are the same just because they are of a certain culture or ethnicity. Beliefs and rituals can differ amongst people of the same community. Therefore, it is essential to get to know your patients and have an understanding of their beliefs as an
After reading different articles and learning more about African American culture, it made me want to find out more about my own family culture. There are different traditions that are pasted down in generations, which could have been a part of African culture that we don’t realize such as parenting styles. I don’t remember hearing too many stories about my past relatives growing up, so I had to find out more on my family experiences in the south. Also, I wanted to see how spirituality played a roll in my family choices. My goal in this paper is to show how I got a better understanding of the reason my family could be structured the way it is now.
Everyone in the world belongs to a subculture. Each subculture has its own sets of traditions, relics, and artifacts. Relics and artifacts are symbolic, material possessions important to one's subculture. Relics are from the past; artifacts are from the present. These traditions, relics, and artifacts help shape the personalities of individuals and how they relate with others. Individuals know about these items through storytelling in the subculture. Families are good examples of subcultures. My family, a middle-class suburban Detroit family of Eastern European heritage, has helped shape who I am through story telling about traditions, artifacts, and relics.
As with any culture, we cannot cookie cut this tradition, differences are present within any culture. As third and fourth generations are now present in the United States, and intercultural marriages exist, the act of Filial piety may not be seen to some as significant. However, most studies are showing the younger Chinese generation continues to care for their elderly. There are no boundaries on culture, culture arrives with the population. As Healthcare provides, we must embrace cultural diversity and the beginning steps toward this goal is education.
This paper explores the concept of culture, its definitions, and its application to nursing and health care. Culture is a group's customs, habits, morals, and shared beliefs. The understanding of culture, not only as a concept, but how it relates to health care is imperative for providers. The lack of cultural awareness, or competency, leads to miscommunication, inadequacy of care, and health disparities among individuals and groups. Jehovah’s Witness’ are one group of individuals with defined morals and beliefs that can be at odds with routine health care: they do not accept most blood products. Understanding how culture can impact a patient, their needs, and beliefs can improve patient outcomes and improve satisfaction rates.
As cited by the National Institute of Health, “Culture is often described as the combination of a body of knowledge, a body of belief and a body of behavior. It involves a number of elements, including personal identification, language, thoughts, communications, actions, customs, beliefs, values, and institutions that are often specific to ethnic, racial, religious, geographic, or social groups” (NIH, n.d).
As nurses entering the medical field understanding the culture of our patients is crucial to proper care. Each culture has their own set of beliefs and values that are shared among groups of people which influences personality, language, lifestyles, house hold, level modesty, social standings, foods, health treatment and identity. Culture affects how people view health and illness; dictating when, where and what type of medical treatment they will receive and who will be their care provider.
their health as excellent, good, or very good. -Health and mobility decline with age, especially after age 80. Disease is more common among older adults. - Most of the diseases of later life have their origin years earlier. -Income is related to the perception of health.
The unit of a family is the most prominent essential for all of us. As social human beings, we seek social support in order to thrive, and that is where family comes into play. A family is where you receive love, support, encouragement, and many other social benefits. The total number of households in the United States increased from 63 million in 1970 to 113 million in 2008 (Weeks, 2012). The family has influenced multitudes of people in many ways. The traditional family in the United States consists two-married individuals providing care and stability for their biological offspring also know as the nuclear family. However, the term of a true family has ultimately changed over the last 50 years especially for African Americans.
Everyone seems to define family differently, however, the significance of family is the same. For you, family means everything. You can always count on your parents and siblings for help and love. Family is very valuable and important to you and should never be taken for granted. No one can deny that family is the foundation of our generation. A family is where we all start our life journey and helps us grow to be successful throughout our lives.
My health is of great importance to me. I firmly believe that having good health is imperative for a happy life. Having bad health can wreck havoc in one’s daily life. I know from personal experience because it has been happening to me these past few weeks. I’m thankfully, recovering as time passes, but I can contribute most of the misery I went through due to lack of sleep. I’ve only experienced these awful symptoms for about a short amount of time, but it’s probably the worst torment I’ve ever experienced in my life to this date. I feel so much happier now because my symptoms are improving. Having good health makes life much more bearable, and now I’m able to do my daily activities with much more ease. Taking care of my body is probably the best thing I can do for myself because it will keep me happy in both the short term, and long term.
