1. Monsanto Food inc. is a public company that works in the agriculture sector. This company specialises in growing crops that have been genetically modified. They create herbicides that kill the weeds between the crops, and chemicals that allow produce to grow much larger than it naturally would. 2. Basically, their mission is to develop and research agriculture, to lead to economical, practical and sustainable solutions for farmers. Their work throughout the academic community as advisors and stakeholders is aiming to increase Monsanto’s knowledge and understanding of the crop destroying, corn rootworm (X) And through research they will be able to strengthen the resistance of these bugs and benefit farmers county-wide. Their motto is Food, Health, Hope; (X) which is supposed to convince the public of the values and corporate social responsiblity that this company believes in. 3. This sounds great. (X) But then why has Monsanto been named one of the world’s most unethical companies? 4. Most people would claim that they would rather buy (X) organic food products than food that has been genetically modified (X). Organic foods are grown in a way that does not harm the environment at all. They are much healthier that in-organic products as they have little to no chemicals added to them. But it is easier to buy genetically modified produce without even realising it. Organic fruits and vegetables are more expensive and not as easy to find. 5. The reason for this is that Monsanto owns over 95% of seed patents worldwide (X). It is responsible for growing more than half of the total worldwide Genetically Modified Organisms for each of these types of crops.
