What does it mean to be “modest”? For Muslim women, “modest clothing” may mean a lot of different things. For some, it means a burqa. For others, modesty means loose clothing and a head-cover. For others, loose clothing that does not reveal cleavage, arms and legs is modest. Many Muslims believe God requires women to cover their hair. Most Muslims who wear the covering call it a hijab, an Arabic word meaning “cover.” Many people who don’t believe it’s required believe that it is preferable for Muslim women to cover their hair. Many Muslims believe that covering the head causes a certain spiritual state of receptivity and centeredness. They believe that it convey a message of purity and godliness to many observers. Different traditions of religious iconography use veils and other head-covers to symbolize purity and even saintliness. A lot of Muslims believe that a headscarf promotes respect and honor for women. So because of that I went around my school and asked Muslim women how they feel about their Hijabs. The first two women I asked looked in their early twenties. They smiled and were very open. “ It is a part of my identity, it is who I am”, one of the girls answered. “ I feel different and uncomfortable without it, people think I look weird but I do not care about other opinions”. They second student looked awkward and answered “ Sometimes I do feel like taking it off because the amount of stairs that I get”. She also shared that “I get asked strange questions like do you have hair under there, or are you going to get hit if you don’t wear it”. “People think some creature will come out of no where ready to punish us if we take off our Hijab” the first student joked. Because of the clothing that Muslim women to please their God (Allah), they are often given strange looks and are even sometimes given pitiful
